We went 5 years very long distance and eventually got married. Have been for the past 11 years. Very happily.  It can work.  You just have to be willing to put in the time and be disciplined about it. Plus, try to stay busy...smile.  It is worth it.

Nope. Tried it once when I was in college (me in New York, her in Germany), and it didn't work.
Eventually I got the dreaded phone call saying "I think we should see other people" (translation: "I'm already seeing other people!") ....aaaaand that was the end of that.
Easiest break-up I've ever had, though! I hung the phone up, shrugged, said "well, I guess I'm single again," then went out and got drunk. If you must break up with somebody, I highly recommend doing it via international phone line. big_smile

(translation: "I'm already seeing other people!") LOL!
Just about every college student has had/made that call.
Looking back I see how "unrealistic" and imature it was to believe teenagers would maintain a LDR for 4-6 years of college.

Long distance relationships were meant to be temporary!
At some point someone has to decide to relocate in order to make things work. The goal is to (be with) the person you love.
When I met my wife I lived in Southern California and she lived in the Chicago area. After a year of us flying back and forth I relocated.
A long distance relationship without "a light at the end of the tunnel" is likely to fail. It's the counting down the months, weeks, and days until one is done with the inconvenience of being in a long-distance relationship that keeps it strong!
The only real reason for being in a long distance relationship is the belief that he/she is "the one".
If you're just passing time you might as well do that locally.

I;m quite sure I'd have never been content to attempt a long distance relationship in my youth.....at least up to age 35.  I find it odd to even consider it a "relationship" when hundreds of miles apart.  Sounds more like an "association,"  "acquaintance" or "Pen pal!"
To qualify as a relationship, it only makes sense to me that you're spending sufficient quality time with someone as you get to know one another and learn just how compatible you are.  Sharing certain things requires an up close and personal situation.
Now however, at my age and at this particular stage in my life.....the further the distance...the better.  LOL.  OK, I say that because I'm not interested in a relationship~~~In the least!.....Good question, Anne.

In college I had to briefly do the distance thing. I started dating this guy right before I had to go home for the summer. He lived in the same town where we went to college and my home was 3 hours away. We texted a lot we used Skype a lot. It was tough but we managed two summers this way. Now we're married and have been together for over six years.

In any other situation or any other distance I'm not sure I could manage it though. Long distance is rough.

I strongly believe that any relationship depends on the individuals in it. Sure, long distance relationships have the disadvantage of distance but if you truly loved someone then distance would just be a number and you would find thousands of reasons to stay with them. Long distance relationships take a lot more patience, trust and flexibility than other relationships due to the distance factor. But it is not impossible. Especially in this virtual era, we have tons of ways to stay in touch with our loved ones. Using Skype and Facebook, we could feel like we are right beside our partner. So, yes, I definitely think I can commit to a long distance relationship! It would be worth the wait!
