   "A campaign kick-off is a political show of force. It's a chance to demonstrate that a candidate's appeal exists beyond op-ed think-pieces, lines on a fund-raising report or clicks on a social media post. Nothing drives home the potential of ballot-box success quite like a throng of faces in a cheering crowd.
   
   On a warm Sunday afternoon at a public square in Oakland, California, Kamala Harris made just such a statement, packing in an estimated 20,000 people as she officially launched her presidential bid.
   
   "These are not ordinary times, and this is not an ordinary election, but this is our America," the California senator said. "At stake is not the leadership of our party and our country. It is the right to moral leadership.

   Her speech, carried live on US cable news networks, was geared towards a national audience, including promises of universal healthcare and pre-kindergarten childcare, debt-free college, a working- and middle-class tax cut, and an immigration system that welcomes refugees and provides some undocumented migrants a pathway to citizenship.
   
   The choice of this northern California city across the bay from San Francisco to launch her campaign, however, was no accident for the woman just two years into her first term in Washington.
   
   It's where Ms Harris, the daughter of immigrants from India and Jamaica, was born. It's also where she first held public office, as a deputy district attorney.
   
   Oakland, she notes, is where she stood before a judge as a prosecutor for the first time and said "five words that would guide my life" - "Kamala Harris, for the people".
   
   It's a line she has now adopted as her campaign slogan.

      She would be 1000 times better than the cretin in the WH now!  She's running on honesty and integrity, something unusual for the last two years of this administration.

         No doubt. As I have previously stated on these forums, most Democratic candidates will have similar policies, so I will be looking for a combination of competence and charisma to be able to win the presidency and then deliver the goods. We have a long way to go, but so far she seems like she could. I like her relaxed delivery while delivering bold statements. Very believable.

      It's going to be a crowded Democrat primary field.
      
      Her platform sounds like a populous one that will be well received, but the real test will be when she has to explain how she will pay for it. This won't be her problem alone. All her competitors will have to make the same explanation.
      
      I think she seems personable and well-intentioned. I will get the popcorn, you get the sodas. It's going to get interesting.

      I look forward to seeing how much she wants to 1) tax 2) offer for free.  I also want to hear her talk about her plans to combat global warming.
      
      Then I'll be interested in how the other Democratic candidates compare to her on these same factors.

         I heard in the news that Ms. Harris proposes to give $500.00 monthly tax credits to families making under $100,000 a year.  Guess WHO will PAY?  Again, another DEMONcrat believing in FREEBIES & GIVING HANDOUTS....What happened to concept of supporting oneself & toughening it out when necessary?  The Democrat Party a/k/a Entitlement Party a/ka/United Socialist Party! Need I SAY MORE!

            That sounds like a great plan.  Those making $90,000 will get a $6,000 refund on their taxes, effectively a $6,000 rise in income.
            
            And those making $30,000, that could certainly use the money, get nothing because they pay no taxes and thus a tax credit does nothing for them.

      Panther, this is a tough one. There is no question that if Kamela Harris receives the nomination she would have my full support. I like
      Elizabeth Warren who has had a national stage in the fight against the exploitation by the Corporate Class and the otherwise wealthy against those who are not. She has "rolled up her sleves" with intiatives like the CFPB (Consumer Finance Protection Board)  couragously fighting Wall Street and the excesses of the finance industry to the point of making enemies. She has got courage and moxie on the ball to boldly standup to their power and influence.
      
      I am not satified with the Michael Bloombergs or Joe Biden's who represents a more play along and get along "establishment sort". If we have learned anything it is that from the Right to the Left people are paying attention to populism, tired of business as usual from either side to the point where candidates are asked are you really prepared to 'rock the apple cart'? While Bernie and the Congresswoman from New York pushes the left too far even for me, I don't think that the establishment divas go far enough. Ignoring the populist wing of the party cost the Democrats the 2016 election with Hillary Clinton. I see in Elizabeth Warren someone with better name recognition, having been in trenches longer. She can get support of the mainstream  establishment and win the emerging populist left, whom I support.  Hillary Clinton could not do that. Even the successful path toward the nomination and election of Barack Obama in the face of today's political realities is too tame. Being female, ethnic and  progressive is not enough, I need someone ready to do battle against a ruthless Rightwinger/Republican party. Such energy and determination is needed to dislodge deeply entrenched power.

   Ms. Harris' campaign intentions seem to be unrealistic.  Universal healthcare-we already have the problematic Obamacare which is a disaster w/premiums increasing.   There will never be universal healthcare in America.  Debt-free colleges- really?  There are ways to attend college debt-free- either your parents will pay for college(if affluent), getting scholarships & grants( if one is smart enough), or the tried & true method, working one's way through college.  If one can't afford college, either work one's way through( it has been done) or get a scholarship.  The government isn't here to foot college bills nor pay for healthcare.  Her immigration proposal is left field.  The only proposal of hers that is sensible, even logical is tax cuts to the working & middle class.   At this point, it is all about the socioeconomics & should be.  We have FAR TOO MANY inane social & governmental assistance programs in terms of college & healthcare already.
