Did you catch Oprah's hour-long "interview" of former Governor Sarah Palin?

I think the tone was set from the get-go, when Sarah tried to hug Oprah and Oprah grabbed her hands and fended her off.
Oprah's not very good at hiding when she doesn't like somebody.

For me, I tried to find a reason to reshape my opinion of Mrs. Palin. Alas, I could not. I found her defensive, evasive, negative and condescending all at the same time.

If she truly is contemplating a run for office, it wasn't very smart of her to lead with an indictment of her handlers in the 2008 campaign. Not very smart.

    Thoughts?

No way will she run.  She's in it for the short (and speedy) money haul, before her star fades.  She sealed any question of a run for the presidency when she quit the governor's office.

And there is no possible way I will ever reform my opinion of Ms. Palin.  No substance...not to mention I don't even think she's aware of how much she really does lie or cheat.  She's scary.

    Hi, MM!

she's certainly a disgusting public figure.

lita, i hope your assessment is correct.  there are probably still over 40 million people who would cast their vote her way.  scary.

    mm, where've you been?

Hi Lita and Blue Dog -- I've been here all along, but pointedly staying out of the Forums. My nerves and blood pressure needed a break.

The polls they showed today indicate that SP is not viewed as presidential material. Only 28% think she's qualified.
She definitely showed what a political rube she is by writing her book and saying the things she said today. I could just see Oprah rolling her eyes.
She referred to Katie Couric as "the perky one" and Oprah jumped at Katie's defense.
I agree -- I will never change my view of her. She is that scary combination of arrogant and ignorant. We just finished 8 years of that in the White House. No thank you!

    Count me in the 28%!!!!!

I have not seen the interview yet, but how could she possibly do well there? Or The View, Letterman, etc.
It would be like Obama on Hannity!

    Yikes!!!! LOL!!!! smile

Well, she put herself on there. I'm sure she will do the whole talk show route that authors of new books do.

Obama could run circles around Hannity, Beck or Limbaugh.

I'm sure Sarah felt today's interview went great because Oprah really was gentle on her. She didn't push too hard into sensitive areas. But just by her answers you could tell Sarah was trying very, very hard not to make a repeat of the Katie Couric fiasco.

She seems quite at home in her role as a mother. Good place for her to stay.

I'm also firmly in the 28 percent.  Didn't get to see the entire interview, since doing so would have meant doing no work on the house I'm building, so I missed the opening where (as reported in earlier posts on this thread) she was "fended off" by Oprah.  I once had a fellow fend ME off like that, though--and we'd been friends for more than 20 years at the time.

But to the point(s):  In those parts I actually saw, Sarah seemed pretty sensible to me.  (Makes me really really scary, huh.)  Her stated respect for Barack Obama's requirement that the press keep children off limits was right on target...as was her calm statement that the media applied a double standard in that regard during the campaign, publicizing Bristol's pregnancy while protecting Obama's children.

I've read interesting coverage of her lately.  In one case, Sarah had stated that most of the time she had used cheap commercial flights during her time as Governor of Alaska.  The reporter then argued with that by saying that no, she had once gone for the high cost, luxurious accomodations...when accurate coverage would have simply acknowledged that what Sarah had said in the first place (that MOST of the time she'd flown as cheaply as possible) was absolutely correct.

And for this she is labeled a liar? (Answer:  Yup.)

As for the assurance (in the anti-Palin camp) that "no way" can she run for the Presidency in 2012...I'm not so sure about that.  In response to one of Oprah's questions regarding her resignation as Governor, Sarah used a favorite quote from her own father as the most accurate summary she knew:

    "She's not retreating; she's reloading."

She also handled questions well regarding how she could expect to handle high office with a sizeable family that included a special needs child...while still being a wife and mother!  Yes, Oprah (of all people) actually took that tack!  A man could, she (Oprah) theorized, because everyone knew that when it comes to the heavy lifting, it's the women who 90 percent--make that 99.9 percent of the time take care of the family.  And (yes, Oprah actually put it this way), "...you don't have a wife!"

Sarah's response covered (a) her strong relationship with Todd which includes a great deal of equality, (b) many many aunties and uncles and grandparents back in Alaska, and (c) that she (Sarah) is actually something of an anomaly (yes, she knew a big word like "anomaly") in today's society in that her family support is both broad and deep...and that it never once occurred to her that she COULDN'T "have it all" (Oprah used the "have it all" phrase first, folks).

Maybe she'll run in 2012, maybe she won't.  I personally think she will.  I personally hope she will.  Where some (Palin haters) see her as shallow and foolish, I see her as seeing right through the B.S. and cutting to the chase with a nice, sharp machete.  Yes, that is very very scary to lots and lots of people.

For my part, I'm with her father 100%:  She's not retreating; she's reloading.

Come 2012, we'll just have to wait and see if she's managed to keep her powder dry.

Hi Ghost! Thanks for a different perspective on what you saw of Sarah on the O Show.  I would never have thought that the O would imply that a woman can't have it all, but perhaps she has changed a lot since the last time I saw her show which was a long time ago.

Flightkeeper, I have to admit it surprised me a little, too.  Don't get me wrong:  Oprah's far too cagey to admit those thoughts (that being a woman in high office could be a problem) might have been her own.  She got around that nicely by saying that OTHER people had brought it up during (and after) the campaign.  But she definitely did bring it up, and pressed it a bit until Sarah went ahead and responded in full, too.

I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have touched that one with a ten foot stick if her guest had been Hillary rather than Sarah, but then Hillary doesn't have all those kids at home, y' know....

I know! If it was Hillary, O would probably ask her when she would run again for president lol

        Talk about a double standard!

I don't care at all for Sarah Palin she appears to me that she is going for sympathy and as for her book I am certainly not going to purchase it or read it.smile

Interesting.  I hear on CNN almost the opposite thing concerning Palin and the "use" of her children during the campaign.  Evidently, she used her youngest daughter as kind of a PR tool to get positive press for herself - turning the child loose to 'charm' and entice reporters.  That is, ONLY if the press turned out positive.  If not, she then complained that writers had cornered and harassed her child.

The truth about her travel expenses isn't presented in full either.  The fact is that she charged the state of Alaska for her childrens' travel...I believe that was listed in one of the ethics complaints against her.  The "high end" trip in question was when she took one of her teenage daughters to a womens' leadership conference (no reason for the girl to be there) in NYC and stayed in a (cough) 'upscale' hotel suite at $667 per night.

And actually, I've done quite an investigation into her past and her lies...beyond this...as her coming to the national stage was so divisive.  So have those who really pay attention to these things:

    http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/t … inued.html

And no serious pol would ever think she is even capable of running for president.  If they do, the Republican party IS sunk.

Is that because you are a liberal democrat? lol  But you are as they say an AASP.  I think her mixed political views drives both parties crazy.  What is funny to me is that even though she presents herself as a 'commonsense conservative' she is an extremely liberal person.  Wait.. let me guess... those aren't Sahara's political views, those are Lyn Vincents. lol

Get real people.  Besides, Oprah prolly doesn't like her because it seems pretty obvious that Sarah doesn't 'really' like Obama, Oprah's messiah. lol lol lol

I think it's really frightening that people are supporting someone who believes that she will witness the end of days in her lifetime. Do you really want that person in charge of our nuclear arsenal?!

I can't believe that dumbell Sarah Palin is still prominent in the USA. I think the 'Saturday Night Live' scriptwriters had a holiday when she was a candidate as they repeated almost verbatim the farcical nonsense she was spouting.
