Which dog breed do you like best?

   I have had German Shepards, mixed breeds, and more recently a Siberian Husky and Shiba Inu. So far, I am most impressed with the Siberian Husky. She has the nice spitz look, is a nice medium size, and absolutely loves people. When we go on walks she always likes meeting people and gives them her tummy. She has never shown any kind of aggression. At the vet (which is always a BIG drama with my Shiba) she lets people poke and prod at her without whining or showing teeth. She has never mouthed on people, except to nibble at their chin as a sign of affection. Handling of paws, muzzle, eyes, and ears are not an issue. She is by far the best temperamented dog I have ever had. Only negatives I have seen so far are 1. lots of shedding and 2. loves to pull.

      Interesting mix! What do you like about these breeds? Their look, energy, temperament?
      My Shiba Inu really likes playing with Pit Bulls when I take him to the dog park. They have the same highly energetic, rough and tumble, play style that he does. My Shiba tends to freak out smaller dogs though. Do you have the same problem with your Pit Bulls?
      
      Also, I read this from the Pit Bull Rescue Central:
      "The majority of pit bulls will, at some point in their lives, exhibit some degree of dog-on-dog aggression."
      I have read the same thing about Shiba Inus. My Shiba Inu will certainly not surrender to other dogs when challenged. German Shepards seem to be like that too. This makes me wonder if most breeds are like that, and it is rare to find a breed that is not likely to show any dog-on-dog aggression. It will be really interesting to have an ordered list of the more likely to show aggression breeds down to the less likely to show aggression breeds.

         * APBT because they have wonderful temperaments when properly cared for and trained. They are the most jovial dog breed I've ever met, and tend to be nothing but big babies. Plus I love dogs with big blocky heads. Very trainable and intelligent dogs.
         * Yorkies because they can be really loving one minute then snappy the next (well mine is anyway). It just seems that with the small dog breeds Yorkies have more personality (to me anyway).
         * Mix breeds just because they're generally good dogs with a good health status.
         * Bulldogs b/c they have short hair and big blocky heads. lol... Plus they very smart, although American Bulldogs are typically harder to house train.
         
         My APBT is very high energy, but she likes any one and anything. Well, she doesn't like reptiles, which is ironic because I have so many of them, which is actually why I think she always tries to get them. But, I haven't decided if she's trying to play or eat them, as she goes after my rats the same way, and she only wants to play.
         
         I really don't agree with the statement from the rescue. Although, it is possible, but I just don't agree with it. I've seen them live till old age with no problems with other pets or dogs. Typically APBT rescues have very weird requirements and whatnot; well, they're really not weird just overly cautious. I was turned down at a rescue becuase I have a female dog and I was looking at adopting a female. They won't let same sex dogs be adopted. And the two females get along great.
         
         I wouldn't trust any list of agression by breed, as APBTs would probably be top, but the U.S. Humane Society has deemed the lab more dangerous than a Pit Bull. They have attacked more people in the last 10 years than APBTs have, and yet they're still deemed one of the best breeds to have with young kids... Ironic huh?

   I have a Shiba Inu on that Nintendogs game on the Nintendo DS though.

   My favorite breed's of dog's are the Shih-Tzu's and Maltese. They are small, but not a toy breed, very easy to housebreak, and excellent guard dogs! I've had dog's for pets for 15+ yrs., and they are very loyal, fun, and stress-reducers.

   Personally Miniature Pinchers are my favorite.  They have the personality of a big dog in a small dog body.  They can entertain you and really make you laugh, well anyways, our little Leah is comical

   I have two American Akitas and I used to have a Japanese Akita. The Akitas are a wonderful breed; tick every box for me.

    Hi,
    I have only ever owned Mongrels ( known as Heinz 57) and I have always found them to be exceptionally intelligent. I have two dogs currently and one is a mix of Collie/Alsatian with a dash of something else. He is a beauty and seems to understand every word I say. The second one is a tiny little poodle mix and again beautiful and highly intelligent. They say that Mongrels are healthier because of the mixed gene pool and are therefore less susceptible to inherited problems and so far this has proved to be true. They had both been abandoned because they were looked on as having no value. Huge mistake!!

       You bring up a really good point. Yes, purebreds may have certain common genetic issues because of their more limited gene pool. Siberians, for example, may have issues with their eyes, so breeders will usually check their dogs for this condition before breeding them.
       
       I think the key issue is more one of responsible breeding. Responsible breeders will check for all common genetic issues in their breed, before deciding to breed their dogs. Many of them will also breed based on temperament, which I think is also extremely important. Many good breeders will also try to import in bloodlines from other countries so that they have a more diverse gene pool. In this way, genetic medical conditions, and temperament issues, can be bred out of dogs.
       
       I really believe that there should be more stringent laws around dog breeding and spaying/neutering dogs.

    That is not always true.  They can still get any health problems that a purebred dog can get of that particular breed.  Its just misconception that they have a less chance of having.  Its still depends on the mixed breed you have and what their health issues can be and you have to look at the parents if known.  I've had 2 German shepard mixes, 1 border collie mix, and 2 cocker spaniels in my lifetime.  Of the ones I have, I am at a tossup between German shepard mix or a border collie mix.  I would love to have a 100% Black and white Border collie though.

    I have had so many different types growing up as a child however I love Cocker Spaniels and have 2 of them. They are cuddly, adorable and love to frolic, and although they can be high-strung a little patience will get you a long way and they are absolutely wonderful with children.

    I love German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Dobermans.  I love big dogs, and I feel these breeds are extremely intelligent and loyal.  They may have a reputation for being aggressive, but the dogs I had never were.  I do know that I never felt safer doing barn chores in the dark (feeding horses) than when I had one of those dogs at my side. 
    
    One dog in particular was a Rottie known as Grizz, and I abolutely loved him.  He was a German import and an international champion, but when I knew him, he was a family dog.  He had been trained as a protection dog, and did not particularly care for men, but he loved women and children.  I bought one of his puppies, and named her Fraulein.  She was a member of our family for 8 years.  She used to crawl up on the couch when we were all in bed.  I would come in the livingroom and hear her snoring on the pillow!  I miss them so much!

       I have always liked German Shepherds. However, my Shiba Inu does not have very good dog social skills, and GSDs don't generally like him very much. I am told that GSDs tend to be sensitive about their personal space, so I am not sure if GSD and my Shiba can live in harmony

    I've had mutts, Labs, and Vizslas. Have loved them all, but I must say that I really enjoy my two Vizslas. They're very smart and have really fun, quirky personalities and breed traits.

    Blue Heelers and Newfoundlands.
     
    Right now we have a Red Heeler/Bull Mastiff mix to keep our Newfie company.  The mastiff is definitely the guard dog.  Two years ago, he "escorted" a burglar off of our property.  He broke our back window to get in, which apparantly startled the sleeping dog because the guy never made it past the window sill, and I'm sure nearly bled out before he could get away.  We found the blood trail from the back window all the way down the street where it disappered when they guy got in his car.  The Newfie's nearly 200 pound frame is intimidation enough.
    
    The Blue Heeler we had LOVED to watch television, and would even turn the console tv on with his nose in the middle of the night.  I was constantly Windexing the screen from him licking and biting at it! 
    
    I think all breeds can be excellent dogs, depending on their raising.

    I must say hands down my fav is the one with the least Poo! How I got into Basset Hounds I'll never know, but I do love them. They are the clowns of the dog world.
    When I walk them I always pick up their Poo and I told them over and over, "I'll pick it up but you carry it." Then I attach the bag to the leash and away we go.
    They shed a lot also, and the pulling thing is quickly halted by use of a pinch collar. They are like little bulldozers and will almost pull off an arm.
    My Toy Fox Terrier is great and he has such small stools. He thinks he's a Basset tho'. I think he may have some sort of complex tho' by not having those wonderful ears. I'm thinking of robbing each one of them of an ear to make slippers out of, they are so soft and velvety. ;-)

    Most of my family's dogs have been black lab crosses, mostly with hounds, though the one my parents had when I was born was with a St. Bernard!  They've all been great family dogs, though a little overenthusiastic when they're young. We've also had a mystery mutt who was probably mostly golden retriever, but white and with hints of collie markings. I occasionally see other dogs who look similar and always want to ask if their owners know what's in them, but have never had the chance. She was hands down the sweetest dog we've ever owned, and all of ours have had lovely personalities, so that really says something.
    
    I also love German Shepherds and have known a couple real Golden Doodles that were delightful dogs. The next door neighbor's standard poodle is a really nice animal as well, though a little ridiculous looking, imho. Her kids have lost interest in her now that she's not a puppy so she comes over to get cooed over by mine.

    This one is actually more difficult then I thought! I've had so many different types of dogs through the fostering programs I work with both with CURS (Catahoula United Rescue Services) and in partnership with a lot of local shelters. So I'm going to give a list of Top Breeds. I have to say there's no specific order though!
    
    Catahoulas aka Louisiana River Dogs
    English Staffordshire Bull Terriers
    American Bull Dogs
    Beagles
    Shiba Inu
    Malamutes
    APBT
    
    Wow that's a bigger list then I thought! I love the english staffy, APBT, and American Bull Dogs all for the same reason, they have amazing personalities and you can't let those dogs down. They are amazing and easy to train and no amount of past abuse seems to kill that spark of "I love my people" The American Bull Dog I recently rehomed, Otis, was shot in the face and left tied up in an ally, they had obviously used him for fighting his whole life. It took him 5 hours in my home to jump onto the couch and curl up with me and my dog Mud under the blankets.
    
    As for the shiba beagle and malamute? These three are by far some of the smartest breeds out there. They are sneaky in their smartness, and they will trick you into giving them what they want. I have to respect breeds that are social and lovable with just that certain level of sneaky.
    
    Catahoulas, there's one that needs to stand alone. Most people don't even know what these dogs are. They are amazing, they are hound stock, and originate in the south. They were bred from hounds and mixing the native river dogs together. The native river dogs are essentially, or were before too much population drove them mostly extinct, a mix between a wolf and coyote, behaved more like hyena's to be honest when you listen to the vocals these guys make! - Catahoulas though have been subject to being ditched in the wild when they failed as hunting dogs, and the southern shelters are overrun by their mixes. These dogs, I guess the way to characterize them is the smarts of a beagle but the human loving personality of a bull breed.

    I have had several over the years.  We owned a miniature pomeranian, but she had so many problems.  We raised her from a pup and then my brother had her until she died around the age of 9.  My present is a cockerspaniel.. he is an older dog I got from a rescue shelter.  What a great dog he is!  I've never owned a cocker before, but he is an excellent dog!

    My favorite dog breed is the American Pit Bull Terrier. But i also really like Boxers and Boston Terriers. The dog that was closest to my heart was my Boston Terrier Slade, who has passed on. That dog was with me through a lot and i miss him terribly.

    I love the German Spitz variety...the poms, eskies, etc.  Love that teddy bear face with the vicious little attitude.
