it was called "desperately seeking followers" and in it was a link to my new blog.

i have seen lots of hubbers post links to their sites and blogs so i don't think it was self-promoting, and it was in this forum.

    i'm confused.

I don't know why they did this. I've never seen a forum thread deleted before.
Maybe you could put the link on your profile page, so people can access your blog from there...

Cosette, if you see other Hubbers posting links to their sites for no reason, hit the "report" button.  We're not supposed to post links unless the link is directly relevant to the discussion in hand.

I frequently post links to Darkside's Hubs on Hubbing, for instance, because they answer people's questions better than I can.

People get away with "illegal" links because the moderators can't be everywhere at once.  But if you start a brand new thread with a link, you can almost guarantee it will be noticed and snipped or deleted very quickly.

Sorry, but we had to delete it because it was encouraging an activity prohibited by our forum rules.

If you see other posts/threads where people are posting links to their blogs or looking for followers, please flag it. They will have to be removed, too.

i should have checked first. i just assumed it was ok since i have seen others do it. i'm sorry about that.

      really? wow. well thank you.

Reading these rules of conduct I'm not sure if I could post cosette's link, as I have no interest in promoting it.

what link? there is no link. there was one link and it was in my forum thread, which they immediately deleted.

i wasn't asking you or anyone to promote me in any way. i was asking people to follow me at my blog because i have seen more than a few 'respected' hubbers do that (twitter, etc.) and assumed it was all right, as long as it was in the proper forum.

i always try to repsect Hubpages' rules, and don't even put outgoing links in my comments as so many do.

        JEEZ! yikes whatever

well, not being one to flag and report, i won't, but i have to say, yestreday i saw someone post a thread in this very same forum with a direct link to their new blog at an external site, yet no one deleted that thread. i have also seen all kinds of shameless self-promotion going on all over the place, including people posting links to their hubs in threads that have nothing to do with their thread, yet the mods do nothing about it.

this just doesn't sit right with me and i am not going to be silent on the issue anymore. thank you.

I'm sorry, but if you don't report it when you see it then it will continue. Like someone else said, the mods can't be everywhere all the time.

You can't have it both ways...

and what do you mean by "Reading these rules of conduct I'm not sure if I could post cosette's link, as I have no interest in promoting it."?

you imply that there is something wrong with my blog. everything on my blog is rated G. gosh, i guess blogging about coco chanel. arthur c clarke and eames art is pretty scandalous all right roll

you make it sound like it has objectionable content or something, which it does not. the only conflict with HubPages' TOS was the fact that it was an external link, period. what is your point anyway?

Hi Cosette!  I think the rules can be very grey sometimes.  I have messed up lots of times on my learning - it can be confusing.

Cosette, I agree, there are a lot of hubbers who post their blog links in the forums...but generally they do it within a forum topic and don't start a topic just about their blog, KWIM?

  9. 1974 profile image67

Seriously, the Hub staff should just prohibit ALL links in the forums.  I too have seen many self promotional forum threads and this is not something that should be "ok" for some and not for others.  There are also threads here where you see the SNIP - No links allowed on one comment, yet comments from other hubbers in the same thread have self serving links.

It depends why the link has been posted.

If a person posts a question and another has the answer for that question, and if the answer is long and detailed sometimes it's easier to post a link to a hub, wikipedia page, or other webpage so the person can read the information they require, rather than copying and pasting all the information.

    3. Uninvited Writer profile image79
Uninvited Writerposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Do you report them when you see them?

It is not against the TOS if you post a hub link in answer to someones question or if it's directly related to the question.

  10. profile image0
    cosetteposted 14 years ago

yep. that i do. thanks Jane!

well i don't want to open a can of worms here. moddies can't catch everything and i don't think they were being selective or anything - it just caught their eye and i made a mistake and learned from it. as for me, i won't "rat out" my fellow hubbers. it's just not in me to do that.

Hey, I thought you put a link to your blog in your profile? You should put it back in there for the backlink and also write a hub about your blog.  I'm sure you will get many more followers there from your fans here. Just describe the blog and why it interests you and how it can be of interest to others.  HP gives you the platform and I'm sure you'll get a better response rate than through the forums since it's real fans/followers you need for a blog.

  12. profile image0
    cosetteposted 14 years ago

i don't like reporting this...i feel like i am ratting out someone. i mean if i see the thread and others see the thread why can't they see the thread?

    1. darkside profile image62
darksideposted 14 years agoin reply to this

If you don't bring it to their attention, they can't see it.

      It's not ratting or dobbing.

HP HQ don't read every single thread. They rely on the community to give them the heads up. Just like it is for the flagging of hubs which violate the ToS. There are things that can slip by the filters, no system is as good as diligent people in a community minded group.

Perhaps they were posted by the new 'elite' class of hubbers, after all they do enjoy superior intellectual, social, and/or economic status.  I'm sure a blind-eye can be turned to the occasional self-promoting link dropped by these chosen few.

In fact it has been in many circumstances for quite a while.

  14. profile image0
    cosetteposted 14 years ago

anyone can join the elite class, which sort of renders the term 'elite' somewhat redundant yikeswink
