   Do you feel obligated to follow someone just because they are following you? Have you ever quit following someone, if so why?

      I don't feel obligated to follow anybody.
      
      However, most of my fans are worth following.  I guess I'm lucky that way.

      No and yes!
      
      NO: When I join someone's fan club it's because I am interested in their hubs - I don't do it to get them to join my fan club - I want people to join my fan club because they like my hubs! I assume that people joining my fan club do the same - it may not be true, but that's my assumption!
      
      YES: I am slowly going through the people I became fans of in my early days - I literally clicked on hundreds of people - now I'm trying to bring it down to people I actually want to read...

   As I choose to receive the hubpage e-mail for new hubs published by my favorite authors, I only follow a few people I find interesting. Otherwise I'd be swarmed with e-mails.

      That's my approach too.  The intention of following is that you follow people whose Hubs you enjoy, so you can be notified when they write something new.  It's not a friending system.

   I am somewhat new to HP. When I first started I would fan anyone who fanned me. Or if I read a hub I liked I would fan that person.
   
   I have recently learned that you realistically can't  follow everyone. And because they have one hub you found helpful or interesting doesn't mean you may enjoy anything else they have written.
   
   Recently I have changed my approach. When I am considering following another hubber I ask myself these three questions:
   
   
   Are they going to help me become a better writer?
   
   Are they going to help me become a better person?
   
   Are they going to make Hubpages a more enjoyable experience?
   
   If I can honestly answer yes to any  of these questions then I will follow that person.

      I like your new approach samboiam. 
      My approach is to follow those I like reading about or think I "need" to read for a variety of reasons.

   samboiam - that is great advice. As my list of those I follow continues to grow I am finding it hard to read all of there stuff. I think I need to let some of them go, esp. since some of them haven't published in like six months. Thanks for all the input everyone!
