Gratitude is an Attitude

GRATITUDE is a warm, friendly feeling of thankfulness and appreciation ~ (WordWeb)

An ATTITUDE is a complex mental state involving beliefs and feelings and values and dispositions to act in certain ways ~ (WordWeb)

On the premise that gratitude is an attitude, I have the following convictions:

  • Gratitude is an attitude; gratitude is a habit; gratitude is a customary way of behavior that enables love.
  • The Ungrateful is not able to love themselves or their fellowman; they have no idea what love is.
  • The Ungrateful is a demanding and dangerous creature, coveting what others regard as sources of gratitude.
  • The Ungrateful is eager to annex sources of gratitude, either by force, or by fraud, or by one or the other disrespectful way.

Say, 'Thank you, Mommy'!

Respect plus Gratitude equals Love

Respect and Gratitude are the very first 'good manners' a mother teaches her child.

Respect: “Call people by their names – Mommy, Daddy, Nanny, Granny – and say ‘please’ when you ask them anything you need.”

Gratitude: “Say ‘thank you’ for what you receive. Even those things you don’t want and haven’t asked for, are bricks you need to build yourself an identity and a life."

Respect (for oneself and others) PLUS Gratitude (with who/what we are and have) EQUALS love ourselves and our fellowman.

Breathing is but only one source of

An A-Z poetic list of things to be grateful for

I've started with an A to Z list of things to be grateful 22 months ago. But as it goes (with me), other projects always tend to hook me before I reach the end of a beginning. Perspectives has now given me the opportunity to edit the existing lists and to add some more.

“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.”
― Marcus Tullius Cicero

“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” ~ Marcel Proust

“True forgiveness is when you can say, "Thank you for that experience.” ― Oprah Winfrey

“Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” ― Epicurus

“Some people grumble that roses have thorns; I am grateful that thorns have roses.” ― Alphonse Karr

Gratitude - Things to be Grateful for: K to O

I am Grateful for

Kaleidoscopes of colors, shapes and toys;

Kentucky fried chicken, ketchup and knives;

Kiosks, kettles, a kitchen of my own;

Kindness, kisses, knowledge and kiwi fruit.

Life, love, laughter, leisure and true leaders;

language and laptops and lessons to learn;

Lips and legs, ladders, leather and legends;

Libraries, licenses, licorice and luck.

Money and matches, moonlight and mercy;

Meaningful moments, memories and moms;

Macaroni-cheese, milk, meat and mash;

Machinery, medicine, music and maps.

Names, nurses, nature, nectar and nylon;

Negotiations and navigators;

Normality, my nose, neighbors and nuts;

Numbers, no nonsense, nothings the matter.

Oxygen, openness, obedience,

Obligations, order, oceans and oils.

Orchestras, opinions, oranges,

Ornaments, what's optional and okay.

      Beautiful mantra you have, CrisSp! There is always-always something to be grateful for. Sadly some people prefer living with a negative attitude, depriving themselves of joy and happiness. Thanks for sharing my hub, and nice to meet you :)

      Wonderful! I love the positive attitude of this hub.

      Indeed, it is all about our perspective in life and the freedom to choose. I choose to rejoice and be grateful in life and simply enjoy the ride. Sharing with you my personal mantra: "Whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul, with all its shame, drudgery and broken dreams, it still is a beautiful world. Be cheerful, strive to be happy."--Be grateful!

      Thank you for this very delightful read on a Good Friday. Sharing the goodness and absolutely voting up and beautiful.

I am on my way to spend 2 days in a neighboring country, so grateful for the opportunity, and will take this lovely message from you all the way with me in the front of my mind. It is such a privilege to know you and all my wonderful co-writer-friends in Hubland. Never again will writing be a lonesome job, thanks to all of you. Take care and keep on shining :)

      Gratitude is the mother of peace. My own mother taught us gratitude from the time we could crawl. Today I'm so glad she did. I think it's just as important to show gratitude as it is to feel it. If we don't express it, it's like wrapping a present but not giving it.

      Oh, my marvelous Martie. I have loved you from day one here on hubpages. Your goodness comes through each hub you write and touches me right to the core.

      May I say that I am so very grateful for you!

      ... and

      May you always walk in sunshine

      May your heart be filled with love

      May your laughter take the place of tears

      Sweet angels attend you from above ~

      Hi dear Hyphenbird! What a question: "What if everything you have today is what you thanked God for yesterday." This surely inspires me to be even more grateful. Could you perhaps give me the pastor's name, then I can quote him in my hub. Thank you, Brenda :)

      Lack of gratitude is indeed a dangerous animal that grows rapidly into something that can take over one's life. I recently heard a Pastor say, "What if everything you have today is what you thanked God for yesterday." In the worst days, there is so much beauty and so much joy all around us. Thank you Martie for the lovely reminder about being grateful.

      I remember the quote well when I was in the selling profession for almost 25 years. " I served with an attitude of gratitude" for I was thankful that my clients saw in me someone they could trust and feel comfortable with the trust they put in me. I have done my best over the years to be grateful for the little things and very thankful for any bonuses in life that granted me.

      I am a strong believer in standing up for the underdog and fighting the injustices imposed on others. Martie I am grateful for having met you here at the Hubs. You my friend have inspired me to stay on course and in your own way have pulled me back from the edge of hell I sometimes balanced on.

      You have been my support and I thank you from the bottom of this dark poet's heart. As Alastar mentioned above "lead by example" that you have done here my friend, you are a shining example to all of us and that I am very thankful for. Genuine and down to earth, calling a spade a spade and not sugar coating everything. You my dear are my female Amigo and hero. Many hugs I send across the miles between us.

      You've really said what needs to be said about gratitude, Martie. Your right, people should focus more on what they have than what they don't have. And when you thank someone sincerity is important, might as well not give it if it can't be done honestly. And in teaching your children respect and gratitude make sure your leading by example, in other words practice what you preach. Maybe your hub will open some eyes this season Martie, hopefully it will - up awe and beautiful my friend.

Some folks just never learn, and for that we all have a purpose to help them learn much more about love, as the true lovers of men and woman that we are, and that of humanity as a whole.

      Thank you for being so gracious, so caring, so giving and kind to write beautifully on ways to understand both what it is to have both gratitude and the right attitude as well as what it is not, as for those party poopers who always try to ruin all the fun us happy people are having in life.

      Thanks to you – and also to the rest of my friends – always leaving me such supportive comments, I love sharing my perspectives and ideas in HubPages. I love this community. You feel like family to me.

      THOUGH, when we say people are like family to us, we actually mean they are like bosom friends to us. Have you ever noticed that relatives accept and love (or hate) each other quite unelaborated. They know (and take us for granted) only skin-deep, as we are in any case bonded by blood that is only skin-deep. I am the eldest of 5 siblings. I love my brothers and sisters (and cousins, etc.) with all my heart. But they don’t really know me. They know and love their PERCEPTIVE on me, or maybe better worded, their conception and interpretation of me. Maybe this is exactly what we love or hate of everybody.

      Thanks for your thought-provoking comments.

      @ drbj ~ I have no idea how anyone could be happy with an ungrateful attitude. Those list from A-J might give you smiles. It was quite fun going through the alphabet looking for things to be grateful for. Of course, I could only mention some of them in 4-lines of 10-syllables each.

      @ Mark Johann – Thank you! The photo is my eldest granddaughter at 3. She will turn 9 in January. Time flies!

      @ always exploring – I am grateful for knowing you and to have the wonderful privilege to communicate with you in cyberspace. Of course, sadly, there is always something that dampens our gratefulness, for example, I CANNOT GIVE YOU A HUG! @ btrbell

      @ mckbirdbks

      @ bravewarrior

      Thank you so much for your supportive and profound comments – such an encouragement (hopefully for many years to come) for readers to make Gratitude their Attitude. I am grateful to all of you for taking the time to read my perceptive on Gratitude and for leaving a supportive comment. @ mckbirdbks, can't imagine no colors, but only black, white and grey!

      @ MickeySr – ‘limp’ is not at all a word I would use to describe any of your writings. You have written an excellent hub on Gratitude, so real, profound and meaningful. Just like charity should start at home, gratitude should also start at home. You are a family man par excellence, and without even realizing it, you encourage male readers to be better husbands and fathers.

      It took me some time to understand the way the cookie crumbles in HubPages. It is a matter of plan your work then work you plan to the best of your ability. Time is the enemy. I will share my plan via email with you asap.

      @ rsusan – my dear fellow-South African, I know that you and my Swedish friend, Sannel, are victims of an illness that keeps you in pain all the time, and therefore you are so very able to know exactly what people take for granted. Both of you are perfect role models, teaching us to be grateful and happy in spite of so many reasons to be the opposite. I, too, suffer for the past year an extremely irritating and painful ailment, so I know exactly what you mean with ‘controlling’ the way you react on others, Life and all its issues. Keeping mind over matter, is my motto, and when I can no longer do it, sleep is the only think left to do, instead of developing an attitude of ungratefulness and unhappiness. Pain – whether physical or emotional – is for ungratefulness and unhappiness like hot oil is for corn, changing it from small pits into puffy masses 10 times their original size. Rika, thank you so much for your comment. I hope your weekend will be pleasant and peaceful.

      @ fpherj48 – There are so many more things to be grateful for, but I could use only those fitting in a 10-syllables line. And that is about the nearest I could get to a poetic list. Lol! Nevertheless amazing when we muse on every word. Thanks for coming over for the read :)

      What a beautiful hub, Martie! Yes, gratitude is an attitude. It's got nothing to do with having everything your heart desires.

      I have so lost much in my life, but have learned to truly value and appreciate all the little miracles that fill my life every day - things many folks take for granted and never even notice. It is all about perspective.

      I firmly believe that, while I can't always control what happens in my life, I can always control how I react to what happens. For me, gratitude is a way of life and for that I am truly grateful!

      My gratitude this morning for knowing you in CyberSpace, where we are all merely heart/soul/spirit, is overwhelming. You lift me up; you keep me high above the mundane affairs of everyday life; you make me ‘walk on water’, you are the most marvellous emotional support a person on this planet can have – people not utilizing the Internet the way we do, have no idea whatsoever what I am talking about when I say that you are as individuals and collective spirit the perfect representative of God. And are we not supposed to be this for each other?

      I am so grateful for the wonderful privilege to know you and everybody in HubPages; I have so much respect for your views and perspectives on Life, Death, Living, Dying, and all the many-many issues we humans have to cope with. I truly love all of you with all my heart.

      Have a lovely Friday! (9:20am SA)

      Martie, Beautiful Hub. Thanks for reminding about the most important attitude - gratitude. Another perspective about gratitude is that we naturally attract more things we are grateful for.

      Your poetic list is simply wonderful.

      You are a constant delight, Baby Tjoklits. you take a subject and offer a smorgasbord of delicacies to savour and chew. The reader is given a tantalising glimpse of perspectives and punditry. I love it!

      Wonderful piece of work here! I am grateful for everything in my life; I don't deserve all the wonderful things God has given me. Without sounding too mushy.....I am truly grateful for the wonderful people I have met through HubPages (such as yourself), that have added to my life.

      I voted this Hub UP, and will share.

      My dearest marcoujor, I am so grateful to have YOU as an online sister. Focusing on gratitude, I once again realize that the reasons for gratitude are expanding with the universe. What we have today, inter alia Internet and all other communication channels, were not known by our parents and ancestors. They had so much less to be grateful for. Now why, one wonders, are so many people today suffering severe sadness and unhappiness? Take care, mar! You are more precious than you will ever know. And not only to me, but to many others as well.

      Hi billybuc, to be always grateful for what we have and may enjoy, was a habit forced into our beings by our parents. Therefore during unfortunate times I was always able to appreciate the Good more than I was able to hate the Bad. There is some danger in this and to sidestep it, we have to keep in mind that we are not born to be victims of the Bad. Our gratefulness for being alive and for having the ability to appreciate Life and all that is Good and Beautiful, should enable us to fight and reject all that is Bad. Thank you so much for your continuous support, billybuc :)

      This is so beautiful...a perfect example of how you tackle a subject from its deepest core and boil it down to its most meaningful parts.

      Mommas can be instrumental in our perceptions and attitudes toward gratitude...we share a total agreement in that.

      Your photos, graphics, video and quotes are superbly appropriate and I think you did a wonderful job...I love your alphabet and will catch up on your reading I have missed...glad this inspired you to continue.

      Voted UP and UABI. Hugs, Maria

      I know there are those who are not grateful, and that saddens me. I look around and see so much to be happy about....I want to shout "LOOK, ALL OF YOU, LOOK AT THE WONDERS OF LIFE." Of course, it would do not good. So, I say a prayer of thanks every night, and I live my life like my tail is on fire. :)

      Great message Martie.
