Paying for a funeral
How can a family pay for a funeral when a deceased loved one had no life insurance? What are the options? How can all wishes be met without spending too much?
I had to pay for my mother's funeral and we set up a payment plan, but I am not sure all places would do that. Another option we looked into was to take a loan from our 401(k), since the funeral was around $6000 till we paid for everything including the header stone for the plot. If you are really in a bind, a 401(k) loan might be good since you do pay yourself back and you may work to pay it off faster since it is your own retirement you borrowed from.
One option would be to ask for donations to the family instead of flowers. Flowers can be beautiful and appreciated, but they are expensive and temporary. In the situation you describe, the family may appreciate a donation toward expenses far more than a beautiful flower arrangement.
I'm afraid you're in for a real hassle if you expect to meet all wishes. I've buried both a son and a brother. In each case we cremated for under $1,000. It seems to me to be the most inexpensive, ecofriendly and simple way to go about it.
