A very interesting question! First of all, it is necessary to find out the root cause of your sadness. If you find the cause, then it is very simple to get rid of sadness. You can get happy, if you eliminate the causes of your sadness. Following steps can help you get happy:

    1. Friends are the most important part of our life. They influence of our life in certain walks of life to a great extent. If you are sad and feel depressed, try to contact your friends. They can help you get rid of sadness. They can divert your attention to something else that will help you get rid of sadness.
    2. Secondly, catharsis is the most important thing to lighten your sadness. If you are sad and do not know how to get happy, then you should give catharsis to your feeling and emotions. Tragic movies are the best in this regard. When you watch a tragic hero falls from high position or gets jilted in love, you also loose control and shed tears at the gloomy position of various characters in the movie. This act of shedding tears is the cause of happiness as it decreases the boredom.
    3. Thirdly, religious panacea can get you real and prompt happiness. Religion has a soothing effect on our mind. The more you are close to your religion, the more you will be happy and content. Thus, try to focus on your religion.
    4. Fourthly, try to change your routines. change in routine can also get you happiness.

Apart from the above mentioned tips, you can also try swimming, bathing in a hot tub, listening to music and having gossip with your friends, relatives, colleagues and wife can also decrease your sadness.

If you feel gloomy for more than two weeks for no apparent reason, it's likely that you have clinical depression and should be evaluated by a psychiatrist. Despite false claims to the contrary, depression is typically easily relieved by medication. Don't let the stigma against mental health and antidepressants prevent you from getting the medicine you may need to live your life to the fullest--your life and happiness depend on it! See a real psychiatrist if you can, not a family doctor or therapist: get the best care to get the best results fast!

Keep company of positive and good people; stay away from the pessimists and gloomers. Change your daily activities and add something you enjoy.

In nutshell, you need to be motivated that comes from high dose of positivity. Good Luck

Yes, negative emotions drain you.If they persist for months expect some psychosomatic disease like asthma, diabetes, blood pressure and so on. There is power in positive mental states which is soothing and healing.

It is internal. Happiness is a natural state of being. But a person can get caught up in likes and dislikes. Everything in the external is in fact neutral. Even the people are neutral. The words or actions of people are completely powerless to affect you. But if you have never been told that truth, then you may have linked others behavior or attitudes to your own emotions. In that case, you will be reacting to the moods or opinions of others which can create a lot of unnecessary unhappiness. You can transcend your own thoughts and feelings about the entire world and be free and happy all the time. Because the world is an illusion that only lives on what you give your attention to. The television, the radio, and the internet are all projecting negative and positive ideas. You have to see the difference between your happiness, and the negative projections or attempts from others. Since they are illusions too, because you can ignore it, or place your attention elsewhere, they do not have the power to influence you or put you in a negative state of mind either. So the secret is; only you have the power. It all depends on what you think about or how you choose to feel. The whole world is an empty, powerless illusion, pretending to have power over you. It only has power if you give it power. All past mistakes, worries, wrong perceptions, faults of others, or judgements can and should be forgotten or transcended. Then there is nothing left but happiness, here and now. You are your own happiness. It has nothing to do with the world, threats, problems or anything.
