    It means that you shouldn't be disappointed if you got gift but you don't like this gift a lot.

    Literally, the way to judge the age of a horse is to check its teeth so before buying a hose of uncertain age or you didn't trust the seller you would double check the teeth.

    If someone makes you a gift of a horse then it would be extremely rude to check it out in front of them.

    I always took it to mean: If you got something pleasant from an unexpected source or at an unexpected time, don't question it, just be grateful. On the other hand, Merlin's answer sheds new light on this old saying.

    If someone gives you a gift accept with grace..even if you dont like the gift..thats how I interpret the saying.
    Personally I have never had a gift I didnt like !! Arnt I the lucky one ?
