Who are in your opinion the best poets, contemporary and classic?

    Hi guys!
Lately I have become more and more interested in poetry, not a specific genre, just poetry in general, and I'm looking for some poems and poets to read. So, who would you recommend?
    Thanks and bye!

    Classics?  Tennyson (Read Ulysses!)
Contemporary?  I'm not the one to answer.  Not that familiar, though I'd recommend mine!!!

    Great question!

Among the best poets I've ever read is someone whom most Americans probably don't even know wrote poetry as well as fiction:  Victor Hugo.  I don't know if his poetry has been translated into English, though.

Dante's The Divine Comedy in John Ciardi's translation, Shakespeare's sonnets, John Keats are classics I'd recommend.  For contemporary work, Robert Pinsky's The Figured Wheel, Derek Walcott, Seamus Heaney, and Louise Gluck's The Wild Iris spring to mind.

Victor Hugo - oh yes! Translations are at Project Gutenberg online. I think people should read them asap.
