Bathroom Remodeling

Updated on October 12, 2009

One of the easiest ways to improve the appeal of your home and your day-to-day living experience is to remodel your bathroom. Bathroom remodeling is something that almost every homeowner will do while he or she owns a home, but very few do it correctly. There are many things you need to consider when coming up with bathroom remodeling ideas. Some people think that all you have to do is replace a fixture or two or change the bathroom sets cheap to remodel your bathroom. That is not the case. The most important thing is to use bathroom remodeling plans or work from a bathroom remodeling design. You need to have a bathroom remodeling plan before you begin and there are many things you should consider when making your plan.

Bathroom Remodeling Plans and Designs

If you are truly serious about remodeling your bathroom then you need to look at your bathroom with a critical eye. Do you have plumbing issues that should be addressed? It will not help your enjoyment of the bathroom if your water pressure is still bad or you still have creaking pipes. If you are doing a big bathroom remodeling, then you could fix the plumbing problems at the same time. Make sure you look up. Many people forget to consider the light fixtures. It is possible for the beauty of your newly designed bathroom to be lessened by an inappropriate bathroom lighting fixture. You should also look at the electrical outlets and consider whether there are enough or if you will need additional outlets for new accessories or appliances in your bathroom like a bathroom TV or laundry machines. You might need to hire an electrician to help, but your bathroom remodeling experience will be better if you take care of big issues like electrical improvements early in the process.

Another thing to consider is the layout of your bathroom. You do not necessarily need to stay with the same bathroom footprint. You can change the location of your bathtub or toilet if it makes more sense for your everyday use or the appeal of the bathroom. For example, having the first thing someone sees as they walk into the bathroom being a large bathtub is more desirable then seeing a toilet. If you are having trouble coming up with a new layout for your bathroom then you could utilize bathroom remodeling software if you have access to it. When considering the layout also try to remember to consider the bathroom vanity tops to make sure that you will have enough room to put everything you need to store in your bathroom. Finally, you want to look at your current fixtures and bathroom items like the toilet, the bathroom sink, and the bathtub to make sure there is not any mildew or mold damage. You might end up having to replace something that you originally were not planning to. It is easy for us to overlook stains and water damage in our own bathroom because we see it everyday and it becomes common place. If you look at your bathroom critically before you begin, your bathroom remodeling experience will be more smooth.

Bathroom Remodeling Costs

If you need to do your bathroom remodeling on a budget there are many things you can do to save on the costs of bathroom remodeling. The first and largest thing you can do to keep the bathroom remodeling costs down is to do the work yourself. You can buy all the supplies you need at stores like Home Depot or Lowes or tile and bathroom specialty stores. If you do not have to pay a bathroom remodeling contractor you will save a significant amount of money. Bathroom remodeling contractors have to build in profit on the materials they use as well as charge you for their time as well as the time of their crew. If you enlist the help of family members and friends, you could have your own bathroom remodeling work crew for free. Nevertheless, sometimes it is necessary to use a bathroom remodeling contractor. If you need to do plumbing or electrical work like what was described above then a contractor is practically a necessity unless you have experience as a plumber or electrician. Other than doing the work yourself, you can save money by using cheaper materials. There are plenty of less expensive choices for sinks, toilets, tile, and storage that are just as beautiful as the top of the line materials. For example, you could use travertine tiles instead of marble tiles.  The travertine looks just like marble, but is much less expensive.

Bathroom Remodeling Tips

There are lots of little things that you can do to make your bathroom remodeling a success. For example, if you are doing a small bathroom remodeling then you can choose to use white fixtures and white tile to make the space seem bigger than it is. Using dark colors in a small space can make the bathroom feel claustrophobic but using white and bright light colors like yellow or light green can make the space feel larger. Another tip for remodeling small bathroom is to use pedestal sinks rather than bathroom vanity sinks or vessel sinks and cabinets. Bathroom sink cabinets take up a lot of room and the pedestal sink makes a small bathroom feel more open and airy. Another way to utilize the space of a small bathroom is to install a corner sink.  Along the same lines, using shelves rather than an enclosed cabinet for storage makes a small bathroom space seem larger.

If you are looking for inexpensive way to make your bathroom look really luxurious then you should consider a bathroom TV or a small sauna. A waterproof bathroom TV can make your soak in the tub very enjoyable. You will not have to rush through a shower or short bath so that you can make you favorite TV program. You can just relax and watch it while you sit in the bathtub. Another great way to relax and make your bathroom seem like a spa is to install a small one person sauna. These portable sauna units are big enough for one person to sit in but you can get all the pampering of the day spa right in your own home.

One final tip is to try to bring the decorating elements from other areas of your home into the bathroom. You should especially try to match the style and feel of your master bedroom if you are doing a master bathroom remodeling. Thinking about the theme in the rest of your home will help to tie your home together into one home rather than several rooms. A lot of decorators use bathroom sink faucets that are similar to the faucets in their kitchens to try to tie the home together. Another common decorators trick is to bring in artwork and decorating accents that go with the rest of the house and the area. You can see this kind of result in the video below.
