Why is it that "compromise" is assumed to be good?

Would it not be considered wrong or bad to compromise ones moral, ethical or political principles? Hence, is compromise only to be considered good if one is not compromising a fundamental principle, such as the Catholics refusal to provide abortion services? It is amusing to hear someone demand that others compromise, while the same individual refuses to compromise because of a strongly held principle. Therefore, compromise is greatly subject to and dependent upon "whose ox is being gored".
