   Absolutely.....NOT!they arent in tune nor do they care to be in tune, they have their own agendas and that doesnt include the welfare of the people they are supposed to be leading.

   I wonder who is this AVERAGE citizen and how does he look like.  In general, I don't think politicians are in tune...  Maybe they are - their goal is to stay in office and get what they want.  As long as they manage, they are in tune...
   
   My impression that the AVERAGE CITIZEN is a passive creature.  Otherwise, America would be a better place to live.  I would say the same for Canada.
   
   And I would say nothing about my native Russia - I feel it is a Disaster Area.  And whose responsibility it all is?  An average citizen who does not want to take care of his own house/home.
   
   It all starts with one person.

   Speaking for our Demo House of Reps Peter DeFazio, I believe he is very in tune with people in his district. People in the Northwest are very concerned about the possibility of mile long coal trains passing through our towns, scattering dust on the way to ports so we can sell the coal to our "friend" China and they can burn it thus creating more bad atmospheric conditions throughout the world. I wrote Rep. DeFazio and got a long letter back detailing the steps he is taking on our behalf to make certain that we will be protected if it happens, even seeking to require the use of enclosed cars for shipping. I was impressed with the depth of his answer, and it is not the first time I have addressed him on issues.
   I certainly think the President, given the much bigger picture he has to look at has done as well as he can given the circumstances of a do nothing but defeat him House. It appears he will have four more years to keep trying, I hope.

   No. They might have children, they might be married. However, they do not always have our problems. Yes, they probably have family members with illnesses and cancer because no family is perfect. Even so, some things happen to the average American citizen that elected government officials do not have to worry about.

   I believe some elected officials are in tune with the average American citizen but overall many are focused on their political party positions which may or may not be what the public wants or needs.
   
   Those we elect work for us not their political party and too often the decisions made by many individuals are out of tune with the aveage American citizen.  We as individuals when we vote in this election must examine if those we are being asked to send them back to Washington are in line with our views or what is best for the country.  I voted and tweeted

   My elected officials fly back and forth between DC and San Francisco on private planes on the weekends.  When one of them was the Speaker of the House  tax payers provided her with a shinny Air Force jet to transport her and her staff of 30.  I don't have that kind of money.  Actually was just wondering where to buy food or gas tomorrow since there isn't enough money to do both until payday. (Friday)  Thank God for bicycles. 
   I believe elected officials are very in tune to their pet projects.  The project may be a worthy cause .  But when everyone protects their own worthy cause and doesn't look at the whole picture you get a puzzle in a box that doesn't do anything but take up space.

    This is the United States, where there are really only a few different types of personalities. A politician is nothing more than one-time teenager who wanted to be famous, but knew they were too ugly to be in film or TV. As a fallback, their vanity allowed them to follow a path toward "being in charge" instead. The trouble is, most of them don't have any money to run multi-million dollar political campaign ads, so they receive contributions from interest groups. As politicians, they love the VIP treatment and celebrity status, because they can flaunt it over eveyone else. Even a member of the lower house of Congress walks around with an entourage and a security detail today. Does that seem like someone in touch? I think most of them are deeply resentful and distrustful of the average American. They are a little contemptuous of the fact that most Americans don't know or understand the things that they know. They think we are all pretty dumb and so play down to the lowest person when they give speeches or campaign ads. It works brilliantly with that 50% of the population that chooses to vote.

       A friend who works in the California State Capitol says legislators get really nice treatment and it takes a great deal of integrity to say thank you for the perks, but no thank you.

    I'm not American, but I think every government official in any country who gets elected has their own opinion on things and 9 times out of 10 that isn't even remotely related to the majority of the population’s opinions.  They make assumptions and hope for the best. It's all about branding you image to support a criteria and this helps you get the votes. Then it's by by my supporters.
    
    Here in Ireland, many of the elected government officials come from middle class families and have absolutely nothing in common with the majority of the population. Only a few stick to the principles that got them elected.  On the other side of things the ones who might have some inkling of the struggles are the independents but they are far and few and trying to get their voice heard is impossible.

    They're in tune with their local Corporate lobbyist, unless they're Ron Paul or a similarly rare member of Congress. Lobbyists learned a long time ago to steer clear of Ron Paul's office, because they got nowhere with him. He couldn't be bought.
    
    The Corporate Party is the real power in America, while the Constitution is quietly dismantled and tyranny sets in no matter who is in the White House.
