Why can't unmarried couples, who love each other get the same benefits as married people?

Why do unmarried couples have to get married to get the same benefits as married couples? Why should the federal government be in the marriage business as marriages are licensed by the states The same arguments for same sex marriage apply with unmarried couples. Benefits, control etc. Allowing same sex couples to marry didn't help those same loving couples who just didn't want to get married to validate their love for each other. The federal income tax is filled with discrimination, but that seems to be OK even with the same people that claimed discrimination by the state govt. Discrimination
