The answer is rather simple, Grace. Intelligence is not "equally distributed", and the history, as well as present time is loaded with proofs of it  -  which doesn't paint future in any more rosy colors than that either. Racism is just a circumstance, like war, like impotence of politicians to create international harmony, like drugs, or any other feature pointing at lack of intelligence.

But it's not all that hopeless, because we can always seek the company of those that are using their heads for more than wearing a hat, and ignore all unfavorable circumstances od coexistence.

Race is only one facet of human nature.
It is not like people don't do the same thing to their own race, ethnicity, gender, or religion etc.

People even do it to their family, and friends, it is just human nature.
Making Race seem any different is just not realistic. Take a look at the themes in the TV soaps, and you will see the theme.

White men are the most discriminated class, and they are discriminated by other white men, but they are not a protected class so they don't haven't any publicity or recourse.

    Human nature knows no bounds.

I believe we will eventually transcend racism.  We've come such a long way already!  Compare today with 100 years ago and see what I mean.

Tribalism is inherent in the species. And if you have a genetically engineered group to try to alter them, they'll be a clique and tribe unto themselves if only due to their differences and the tendency to band together with those like us or who share our values.
