Can the anger that surfaced during this contentious election and campaign season be mended?
Many people say the country is broken? What do you think about the USA, now that the election is over?
The root cause of this is two fold.
A. The authoritarian left redefining tolerance from agree to disagree to "endorse me or shut up", while adding the racism, sexism and bigotry they say they oppose. Think Lena Dunham saying the world is fixed by killing all white men, a hash tag Twitter sees no problem with.
B. The liberal community branding itself as good, smart, rational, tolerant, educated and then smearing all conservatives as stupid, irrational (phobic/haters), intolerant, uneducated (on the assumption that all smart sane people will agree with them).
The irony of liberals "othering" and demonizing conservatives shows a terrible lack of self awareness by these "smart" people.
C. The addition of "words equal violence", so the authoritarian left is able to physically assault people with dissenting views. This is dangerously close to Islam's killing critics for the sin and crime of criticizing Islam. For years, liberals were at the "I call your speech hate, you should be jailed if you continue" or "jail the skeptics!".
In the past year or two, it escalated to "you spew hate, you get hate", as the liberals beat up those who disagree. Those words are from the mob that beat up the black homeless woman for protecting Trump's star. It has been repeated at college events where liberals hit audiences and speakers, destroyed property - and blamed the victims.
That's the fascist streak in the past two years that drove many to vote for Trump, the only candidate speaking out against it.
Then add the legitimate concerns silenced by liberal bullies. A feminist brings up concerns that mentally ill biologically intact men with attracted to women (2/3 of transgenders) shouldn't be in women's shelters, girl's locker rooms, because of the risk of rape per the 1/5 rape stat. She gets called a transphobe.
A black person saying affirmative action leads to black kids sent to schools above their level, so they flunk or get useless degrees - get called racist. (Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell).
If you bring up how immigrants have led to 1/6 of men being out of work and workforce participation rates at 1970s levels, along with depressing watches, get called racist.
This anger is solved when liberals tolerate dissenting views again, give up their right to harm those who disagree, recognize the legitimacy of many complaints, and check their own biases.
I'm not a Bible thumper, but it's obvious that you don't see the "mote" in your own eye. You are continuing the anger that Trump started. Peace be with you.
Liberals brand themselves as good, smart, rational, tolerant and conservatives as bad, stupid, crazy, intolerant. Check your biases, because that reflexive namecalling and delegitimizing of valid concerns is why Trump won in the first place!
Al Sharpton & ones like him will make as much of this as they can instead of trying to hold peace & it seems these people are just not wise enough to know men like him are not looking out for them but in it solely for profit.
There is a minor civil war based upon the election. Let's clarify this. There has been a civil war between Conservatives & Liberals on key major sociopolitical & socioeconomic issues. Conservatives & Liberals have gone from moderate/traditional to more extreme, even radical in their sociopolitical stance. Conservatives have become more reactionary, even right wing while Liberals have become more revolutionary, even left wing. There is contention between the two factions.
With the election of Barack Obama to President, the Conservative hyperbole began. First, the hyperbole was that Obama wasn't born in the United States hence the beginning of the birther movement. Then the hyperbole w/Obama"care" that there will be death panels. The hyperbolic hysteria continued w/the legalization of same sex marriage & rights for transgendered people which set many Conservatives especially the extreme ones off.
Now with the election of Trump as the next president, the Liberal hyperbole is getting into swing. Many Liberals, particularly the more extreme ones maintain that Trump is a harbinger of the rise of right wing tyranny. They contend that there will be a marked rise in overt racism towards Blacks & other non-Caucasians. They further portend that women's rights will retrogress at least 50 years when women had little or no reproductive rights. They believe that the rights won by minorities, women, the LBGT community, & other marginalized people will be lost.
In New York City where I live, there are protests from the Hillary camp. They are very fearful of what will occur in America as the result of Trump becoming the President Elect. This is quite reminiscent of many Conservatives when Barack Obama won the election. It is part of the political paradigm. When a Liberal president wins, many Conservatives are up in arms & when a Conservative president wins, many Liberals similarly are up in arms. It is all part of politics. C'est la vie.
P.S. Conservatives thought it was the end of America when Obama was elected president. The same goes for Liberals who contend that it is THE END of America as they know it as a result of Trump's election. With passing time, each faction will become even more RADICALIZED/EXTREME than ever before.
The extremism is due to SJW totalitarianism saying we want to control what people can do or say, enforced by threat of violence for the dissent enforced by mobs online and in real life. When liberals renounce these totalitarians, it gets better.
Tamara, you are so right. I have seen this hate too and it is so sad. I do not see what their hate is going to accomplish. You are no longer allowed to disagree with someone that is liberal. They will throw hate at you so hard that you will feel you have been punched. My daughter feels this is how to disagree. She does not see that this is counter productive. You cannot convince someone of your good intentions with hate.
There are massive riots protesting Trump's win. What has the United States come to? When I was in college & Nixon won another presidency, I just said well. Although I am a Liberal, I find such behavior atrocious. Just accept the Trump win!
These are the same rent-a-mobs used to attack the Tea Party for more than a year and create violence at Trump events blamed on Trump supporters.
It does seem to me the ones yelling racist and hate are the ones guilty of it. Who is it out protesting what is our legal way of doing things and who is it hurting innocent old people because of who they think they voted for? How can they do these things and say the blame is somewhere else? It makes no sense. Are they blind or just what? I really would like to understand them.
