Seems that President Trump's call for donations to his legal defense fund don't really go to his legal defense fund for overturning the election:
https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-usa- … KKBN27R30B
Most of the money goes to a PAC or the Republican National Committee.
Trump's website says: "Official Election Defense Fund".
If a Trump donor gave $500, for instance, $300 would go to Trump’s Save America PAC, $200 would to the RNC - and nothing would go to his election defense fund.
Is anything going from either the PAC or the RNC going into ensuring our elections was legitimate? It would seem reasonable that both of those would be interested in such an endeavor, and it would certainly fit well into the goals of both.
According to your link, the writers of it don't know if those organizations are providing funds, although they have every legal right to do so.
"Under Federal Election Commission rules, both groups have broad leeway in how they can use the funds.
The Trump campaign, the RNC and Trump’s new Save America PAC did not respond to requests for comment."
So they are merely assuming that 100% the money goes to other projects, and trying to convince those donating that it is so. Pretty typical political posts, seems to me: try to convince people that an opponent is doing wrong without ever knowing if it is true or not. As close to lying as one can come while still reserving the excuse that "Well, it might be true!".
You can read the article or make up your own story, I guess.
I did. And quoted from it where they say they don't know the answer to my question either. They just assume it and then insinuate it.
Do you disagree? Do you believe they are NOT insinuating that no contributions are going to the "defense fund"? Or do you believe they DO know the answer but aren't saying so?
I guess I just assumed it was similar to Steve Bannon's wall fund:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-53853297
I think the point is that the donations are not going to the legal defense fund and can be used for anything or just kept for other purposes. It's certainly possible that the PAC or the RNC could pay for lawsuits, but I assume Reuters knows how that all works.
"I think the point is that the donations are not going to the legal defense fund..."
That's kind of the point: your link made it clear that they don't know where the money is, or will be, going to. Only that it could go elsewhere.
I'm sure Reuters knows quite well how it all works. Which is why they assume that it will not go to the defense fund. It makes a great point to the anti-Trumpers...as long as they don't read the disclaimer that Reuters doesn't actually know.
It does not go to the Legal Defense Fund. It goes to the two other funds. It could be used for legal defense, I suppose, but that is not the fund where the money goes unless it's over $8k or so.
This article spells it out a little better. The money is legally prohibited from being spent on recounts:
https://www.politico.com/news/2020/11/1 … ing-436188
Here's another, spelling out how the money donated doesn't have to go anywhere and can be kept by Trump:
https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2020/11 … slush-fund
This one says that over 50% of that money will pay down debt from his campaign:
https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/trump- … xzuW4lIwai
Well, let's see. The first says half may go to recounts, but you say it claims it cannot go to recounts.
The second says the "lions share" (a gross exaggeration as the number is 60%) goes to a PAC that could pad Trump family pockets (or defend lawsuits) with the other 40% going to the RNC.
The third says half goes to election debt retirement and to half to recount.
And from this wide disagreement you conclude that it will not be used to contest the election or be used in legal defense of claims the election was not fair.
I'm not following the train of thought - frankly it looks more like a desperate attempt to support an unsupportable statement.
I really don't give a tinker's dam. If his supporters continue to support this con man who is continuing to put our national security in danger, they deserve what they get.
This is where I'm at. The chair of our county Republican party, who is a friend of mine, just made a speech where she encouraged people to get together with friends and family over the holidays. We are experiencing a huge increase in COVID-19 cases, fueled by Halloween parties. This woman's husband is wheelchair bound with a neurological disorder. Her father is 85 years old and her brother has COPD.
And here on this thread, you see a Trumper unwilling to admit Trump is conning his supporters by lying about where their funds will be used.
I'm so done with them. Their inability to accept reality, their defiance of science, and their petty selfishness, all of it, is endangering everyone. I'm like you. They deserve what they get, but the rest of us are now having to cope with the dangerous consequences of their ignorance and self-centered actions.

Three things have happened in recent days that should have any logical person convinced that President Trump is a liar and guilty of the thing he's being impeached for:1. His lawyers have asserted that the reason for withholding aid to Ukraine had to due with the fact they were responsible for...
