Which? Magazine (a not for profit organisation) was first launched in the UK in 1957, it promotes ‘informed consumer choice’ in purchases of goods and services by testing products, and it raises awareness of consumer rights and offers independent advice.

In fact ‘Which?’ magazine has built up such a reputation for itself that over the years it’s been granted legal powers by the Government to prosecute rouge traders:-

    •    In 1999 Which? Magazine was given powers by the Labour (Socialist) Government under the ‘Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999’ to seek an injunction to restrain the use of an unfair contract by a trader against consumers.

    •    In 2002, under the ‘Enterprise Act of 2002’ passed by the Labour (Socialist) Government, Which? was one of 8 Consumers Associations in the UK who were granted legal powers to act on behalf of consumers in conjunction with the ‘Office of Fair Trading’ and the ‘Competition and Markets Authority’ e.g. on matters of ‘product or service’ compliance etc.

    •    In 2005 the UK Labour (Socialist) Government granted Which? Magazine legal powers to prosecute ‘rogue traders’.

    •    Also in 2005, the UK Labour (Socialist) Government granted the Which? Magazine special powers to bring proceeding to the ‘Competition Appeals Tribunal’ on behalf of consumers; its first case under this provision being 2007 when it took action against a supplier for ‘unlawfully overcharging on football shirts due to price fixing’.

We do have a publication known as "Consumers Reports" that does not accept advertising that allow it to make objective evaluation of products by people who are familiar with the specific product that they evaluate.

I have used it often to make objective buying choices over which brand of product to buy based on objective information.

Wow, thanks Credence, it's good to see the USA has something similar, I enjoyed reading up about it on Wikipedia:-

I found this TV buying guide by Consumer Reports on YouTube dated 2020 which is quite informative - https://youtu.be/kIMb3zW_4EQ
