On his last day as director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Francis Collins' frustration was evident.

"I get upset because people point to anecdotes of somebody who got sick even though they had been vaccinated and say, 'There, you see, it doesn't work,' " Collins told Fox News Sunday guest host Bret Baier. "That's way too simplistic."

As the omicron variant of COVID-19 is set to wend its way through the American population — wreaking particular havoc on the unvaccinated — 50 million vaccine-eligible Americans still haven't gotten even one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. "How did that happen?" Collins asked. "How did we get all of this so mixed up with social media, misinformation, and political insertion into the discussion? This is the thing for me on my last day as NIH director that I find particularly frustrating."

Pro-Trump counties now have far higher COVID death rates. Misinformation is to blame

Pro-Trump counties now have far higher COVID death rates. Misinformation is to blame
Collins' last day comes as the virus is ravaging the unvaccinated — who often tend to be Fox News viewers. An NPR investigation this month found that vaccination rates are far lower in counties that strongly supported Donald Trump during the last presidential election. People in counties that went 60% or higher for Trump have been almost three times as likely to die from COVID-19. Studies have found that Fox News viewers are more likely to believe COVID-19 misinformation.

"We've got to remember, this is the enemy," Collins said, holding up a model of the virus. "It's not the other people in the other political party. It's not the people on Facebook who are posting all sorts of crazy conspiracies. This is the enemy. We in this country have somehow gotten all fractured into a hyper-polarized, politicized view that never should have been mixed with public health. It's been ruinous and history will judge harshly those people who have continued to defocus the effort and focus on conspiracies and things that are demonstrably false."

Look at Europe continent with the most covid deaths of any 7 continent. With the highest fully vaccinated rate of around 80%.

Then look at Africa continent with almost double the population then Europe. With only 10% fully vaccinated. And excuse of one variant debatable.

Castle, you are one of those people Dr. Francis was refering to.

Your comment is pointless. Do some adjustment to age distribution (with respect to Africa), do population adjustment between Europe and USA or North America and you get a different picture.

Imho the US response is a total failure. Politicising the matter made things really bad. Trump administration ignored the threat and pushed conspiracies. After vaccination rollout way too few people in the US accepted the overall benefits of vaccines. So what are you talking about.

And don´t compare Africa with young populations to ageing Europe (or the USA) . Don´t compare Italy (life expectancy 83 years, median age 47 years) with lets say Nigeria (life expectancy 54 years, median age 18 years). You know the Covid19 is a threat to the elderly foremost.

In 2020 (before vaccination) greater Europe (including Turkey and Russia) with 1 Billion population suffered 500.000 deaths. Same period in the US with 1/3 population it was 350.000 deaths.

In 2021 in Europe died 1 Mill. while in the USA died almost 0,5 Mill.

Combined 2 years and you have roughly 350.000 deaths too many in the USA that could have been avoided if doing the same as bad old Europe did on average( the good vaccers, the average vaccers and the poor vaxxer countries combined).

America has lowered their life expectancy by two years, first time in modern history. Europe has not raisen their their life span as much as Africa by 20 to 40% the last 30 year. Plus 60 third world countries are doubling their economic growth greatest than US.
I would move to Africa for freedom and choice what goes into my brain and body. If I could get pass the airport with the Russian roulette lethal injection program.

Than we have Asia much lower covid death and vaccinated, than America and Europe.

Castlepaloma - The Data Speaks for Itself:-

        UK 20th December 2020:

        •    35,928 people in the UK were reported to have covid on this day a year ago (20th Dec 2020), and rising sharply by the day.

        •    20,004 people were in hospital with covid in the UK on this day last year (20th Dec 2020), and rising sharply by the day.

        •    1,442 people were on ventilators in ICU beds in the UK on this day last year (20th Dec 2020), and rising sharply by the day.

        •    440 people died on this day last year (7 day average) in the UK (20th Dec 2020), and rising sharply by the day.

        •    Only a small number of people were vaccinated in the UK in December, because of the chronic shortage of the vaccine and because the NHS was not geared up for a massive covid vaccination rollout.

        •    The main vaccine rollout programme didn’t start in the UK until the 11th January 2021

        •    In the UK the policy at that time was to wait for 12 weeks between the 1st and 2nd dose, so hardly anyone in the UK were fully vaccinated until March 2021.

UK Pandemic Peak in January 2021:

        •    68,053 people in the UK on the 8th Jan 2021 (peak of infection rate) were reported to have covid.

        •    39,254 people were in hospital with covid in the UK on 18th Jan 2021 (peak of covid hospitalisations).

        •    4,077 people were on ventilators in ICU beds in the UK on the 24th Jan 2021 (peak of ICU beds for covid).

        •    1,2.41 people died on the 23rd Jan 2021 (7 day average); at the peak of covid related deaths in the UK.

        •    At the peak of the pandemic deaths in the UK (mid-January 2021) only 5 million people had had their first vaccination – Just 7% of the population.

        •    At the peak of the pandemic deaths in the UK (mid-January 2021) virtually no one in the UK were fully vaccinated because of the 12 week gap between 1st and 2nd dose.

UK Pandemic Today (20th Dec 2021)

        •    Largely due to the Omicron variant (which is now the dominant variant in the UK) over 90,000 people in the UK are reported to have covid; 50% higher than at the peak of the pandemic in January; and still rising sharply by the day because of the new Omicron variant.

        •    Just 7,611 people in the UK are currently in hospital in the UK; just 19% of those who were in hospitalisations at the peak in January, in spite of the fact that infections are 50% higher; although hospitalisations are currently rising slowly at the moment, but still lower than they were in October 2021 (two months ago).

        •    Just 875 people in the UK are currently on ventilators in ICU bed in the UK; Just 21% of those who were in ICU beds at the peak in January, in spite of the fact that infections are 50% higher than they were in January.  Static at moment.

        •    Currently the 7 day average for covid related deaths in the UK is 108; and still falling slowly.

As of Yesterday, the current vaccination status in the UK is:-

        •    89.5% of the UK population over the age of 12 have had their 1st vaccine shot.

        •    81.7% of the UK population over the age of 12 have had both vaccine doses.

        •    48.8% of the UK population over the age of 12 have had a booster shot; albeit only those over the age of 18 in the UK are eligible for the booster.

In the UK the age of 12 is the youngest you can be to get the covid vaccine; and in the UK, at the beginning of December the gap between the 2nd shot and the booster shot was reduced from 6 months to 3 months.

So Castlepaloma, you only have to look at the above data, and use some common sense, to realise that a comprehensive vaccine programme where the vast majority of people are willing to be vaccinated does reduce hospitalisation, serious illness and death quite considerably e.g. covid related deaths in the UK are now a 10th of what they were at the peak of the pandemic, in spite of the fact that covid infections are currently over 50% higher than they were in January and rising sharply by the day.

        The data speaks for itself.

Thank you for offering this very complete data. With the new Omicron virus, it appears the virus is very much less to kill its host. I thus far have noted only one death in the UK from Omicron, and none in South Africa that I could find.

It would seem DELTA is starting to drop in the UK due to the good vaccination rate. Hopefully, we will see less DELTA in the US soon, we seem to follow the UK patterns but lag by a few weeks. However, we have fewer vaccinated which is prolonging the virus in the US.

Yeah, the severity of Omicron is still an unknown; although for the record there's now been 7 confirmed deaths in the UK linked to Omicron.

Looks like the USA, Norway and Denmark are taken over by Omicron, more than 50% of sequenced PCR. And it took only 2 weeks from first appearance.

While the severity is still unknown, Germany is trying to keep immigration closely monitored and quarantened. And booster vaccination is at absolute high with almost 1,5% of population vaccinated every day to close the "booster gap" as fast as possible.

Appararently measures show some success as the Omicron variant is still at 1% in G. and has not taken over yet. But is only a matter of time for Omicron to conquer G. with so many high Omicron neighbours in our free to travel EU.

Until then we look at the "petri dishes" of UK, Denmark, USA to understand how dangerous Omicron really is.

Only 2 days later and the Omicron variant has increased from 1% to 7% in Germany.

Interesting this dynamics. Apparently Omicron is between 3 to 5 times more contageous than Delta, making it some 15 times more contageous than initial Alpha from the beginning of the pandemic.

And we shall find out if Omicron really comes with milder symptoms.

About 70% of new cases in the UK is the Omicron; although it varies across the UK, for example:  As of 18 December, in London, 89.7% of PCR test samples had S-gene target failure (indication of Omicron), compared with 47.7% in the north-east.

Castlepaloma, you said in your comments above, to  quote:-

“Look at Europe continent with the most covid deaths of any 7 continent. With the highest fully vaccinated rate of around 80%.”

So I presented you with the facts that in the UK (which is part of Europe) that since just under 90% of the population over the age of 12 have been vaccinated that the covid death rate has fallen 90%; proof beyond doubt that the vaccines have worked to save the lives of tens of thousands of people in the UK.

Yes, as you state above:-  “This post is asking for all of us to realize the truth.”; so if you didn’t spend so much time down ‘rabbit holes’ you might finally recognise the truth that the covid vaccines are saving lives.  But then again, ‘Pigs might fly’!

Britain is planning more rules imposing tougher COVID-19 restrictions before Christmas

This highly transmissible new variant, even as hospitals brace for a surge in infections, told to the BBC.
Boris Johnson last week reinstated rules requiring face masks in shops and ordered people to show proof of vaccination or a negative coronavirus test before entering nightclubs and other crowded venues.

Wail Vaccination sites are being asked to operate 12 hours a day, seven days a week.
"We can't wait for hospitalizations to go through the roof before we do something about it, because by then it's too late,″ Professor David Spiegelhalter told Sky News.

The British Medical Association is warning that almost 50,000 doctors, nurses and other National Health Service staff in England could be off sick with Covid-19 by Christmas Day unless additional measures are introduced.

"The reality is that MPs (lawmakers) have broken up for Christmas leaving the NHS brutally exposed to suffer the consequences of surging case rates and without the restrictions needed to bring these under control

The government reports COVID-19 cases in a day. With over 147,000 deaths, Britain already has Europe's highest COVID-19 death toll after Russia.

Nations across Europe are moving quickly to reimpose tougher measures to stem a new wave of COVID-19 infections spurred by the omicron variant. The Dutch government began a tough nationwide lockdown starting Sunday to rein in sharply rising infections and alarmed ministers in France, Germany, Austria and Cyprus have tightened restrictions.

Castlepaloma, you’re twisting the facts again to suit your argument; as usual.  Only last week you told me that you preferred ‘pro-rata’ data (data adjusted for population size); so why not use the ‘pro-rate’ data.

Here, where you state “Britain already has Europe's highest COVID-19 death toll after Russia” you’re using data regardless to population size rather than ‘pro-rata’ data; so with the UK and Russia having large population then of course their death toll is going to be high compared to many other European countries with much smaller populations.

If you sort on the data ‘pro-rata’ which is the 11th column along on the worldometer that’s headed ‘Deaths 1M pop’; then you’ll find that adjusted for population size Britain is currently 11th, and Russia is 44th in Europe.

European countries with a higher death toll pro-rata than Britain include the Netherlands and Belgium.

                https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Yeah, the different parts of the UK have recently imposed tougher covid restrictions, with more to follow after Christmas.

The current restrictions in England are ‘SOFT’ e.g. just mandatory masks in ‘some’ settings, and covid passports in ‘some’ settings; which is no great deal.  I don’t mind wearing a mask when required, and if/when required I’ve been fully vaccinated so I already have a vaccine passport anyway.

Yeah, vaccination sites are popping up all over the place, and some are actually open 24/7, so that the UK Government can get closer to its target of rolling out 1 million booster jabs per day; and the programme is going great:-

As of yesterday in the UK:-

                •    1st dose = 89.6% of the UK population over the age of 12.
                •    2nd dose = 81.9% of the UK population over the age of 12.
                •    Booster jab = 52% of the UK population over the age of 12.

You’ve quoted, out of context; a lot of good snippets from the British media expressing the varying views of the Government Scientific Advisors, the NHS and the UK Government; so you’ve left lots gaps in the full picture.

                1.    Yes the medical and scientific advisors to the Government (SAGE), with currently insufficient data on the new Omicron variant is quite wisely warning the Government that if it waits for the data before acting it might be too late. E.g. where Professor David Spiegelhalter says "We can't wait for hospitalizations to go through the roof before we do something about it, because by then it's too late”.

                2.    The NHS (British Medical Association) is quite rightly warning the Government that they anticipate that 50,000 NHS doctors and nurses could be off sick with the Omicron variant before Christmas, if the Government doesn’t introduce additional measures (covid restrictions).

                3.    Yes, the reality is that the MPs (lawmakers) have broken up for Christmas.  But that doesn’t leave the NHS brutally exposed as you suggest.

                •    It leaves the NHS vulnerable if the UK Government doesn’t respond quickly and the NHS gets overwhelmed with a large influx of sick people suffering from Omicron.

                •    But unlike the Governments in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the UK Government for England (Boris Johnson, Prime Minister) is reluctant to impose more restrictions until more is known about the new Omicron variant.

                •    However, although Parliament has closed for Christmas (MPs, the lawmakers); Boris Johnson is being briefed daily by the Government’s Scientific Advisors; and if it becomes obvious to him that action needs to be taken then he will recall Parliament to debate and vote on the situation as necessary.

                •    Current expectation is that Boris Johnson will most likely recall Parliament for an emergency debate on or around the 28th or 29th December.

So the UK is only doing what other countries around the world are currently doing, except that in comparison to a growing number of countries the covid restrictions are quite ‘soft’ in England.

Yep, it shows that you don’t watch the News on TV.  Yes, the UK currently reports a record high number of daily covid cases; 50% higher than it was in January, and still rising sharply by the day.

But guess what; because of the highly successful vaccine rollout and a highly successful booster rollout:-

                    •    Hospitalisations are a 6th of what they were last January and NOT rising dramatically; hospitalisations are only up by just 2.2% on last week, and are still lower than they were in September.

                    •    The deaths rate is a 10th of what it was in January and not rising dramatically; daily deaths are only up by just 0.9% on last week, and are still lower than they were in September.

So the fact that the “UK reports the highest number of daily covid cases since the pandemic began” while hospitalisations are a 6th of what they were during the peak of the pandemic in January a covid related deaths are a 10th of what it was during the peak of the pandemic in January is a testimony that the covid vaccines and booster jabs are being very effective in preventing hospitalisation and deaths.

IMO the last paragraph says it all as far as I am concerned. It is too politicized, too much misinformation incorporating memes as a reliable source, and poor communication skills due to emotions lacking reasonable debate. One needs to recognize it is a problem/challenge as the deaths and hospitals being full tell us. Those two are taking place worldwide. I don't need anymore evidence than that.

You guys still playing Covid? That’s so last year. I’m done letting the government frighten me. No government has stopped the spread, no vaccine appears to be wiping it out, no mask mandates appear to protect against infection. It isn’t the end of the world. Nothing much left to see here.

I got vaccinated. I’m not shoving my nose in other people’s business. Let them make their own decisions. My vaccination protects me from them and them from me. I’ve done my part.

      Gave one for the team.
I understand, when unvaxxer life is impossible and the horrible discriminate upon the divide and conquer model is overwhelming do it or esle.

Things are falling apart at record speed. before you panic, their are three way this apocalypse can go.

1 The complete final destruction of the world, like Revelation a destruction or damage on a catastrophic scale.
2 Or an Aquarius age revelation of great knowledge;  “an uncovering” of something important that was hidden providing, “A vision of heavenly secrets that can make sense of earthly realities”.
      3. I have no freaking clue

“The “virus” will come back stronger and stronger as vaccine deaths are blamed on new mutations”.Familiar like it happening-right-now.
Many of opposing doctors and scienctist have claim that “the vaccines will cause you to be sick, spread the virus, or would be more harmful or in deaths. Then technocrats and beurocrates claim them “false or misleading claims then banned and blocked them. Regardless of CDC’s admission that “vaccinated people can still become infected and have the potential to spread the virus to others.”

Government NEEDS YOU to help fight terrorism, cyber threats and climate change. It’s for the common good man! And in return you can feel safe knowing the government and billionaires are looking after you. Where they really don't care for you and I at all.

How German changed back into Eastern Germany in the blink of an eye. Now Amish lifestyle seen like paradise and I'm living it without the religion. My words can not harm you where mass Psychosis can greater than anything.

The hypocrisy of the elites in western democracies is rolling into full view and the protests are widening. We will see the end of the tyranny.

In America, the majority are law abiding citizens and we tend to give the government leeway to self correct ignorant courses they embark on. Elections have consequences and those who seek to subjugate see the handwriting on the wall for their pompous ignorance.

          ...Elections have consequences...

No, not elections have consequences but situations and actions lead to consequences in elections.

We had elections in Germany in September. For almost half a year any systematic approach to fight the pandemic was ruled out by all competing parties. Politics were afraid that strict measures would reduce their respective chances.

Consequence of this inaction: Active cases quadrupled from last Winter. Now new administration is established and new measures are taken (booster vax ramp up, restraining unvaccinated from the public).

Action or inaction have consequences, not elections.

But in the US there is no real difference from before new administration to after. In 2020 active cases were at 7 mill. In 2021 active cases are at 9 mill. Not much change. Both administrations were/are troubled by federal and state activity not being aligned.

In 2020 federal admin. ignored the virus and only bragged about vaccine development that wasn´t even developed in the US. In 2021 federal admin rolled out vaccination programs but was long time hindered by state admin to achieve success.

Today the US pandemic response is a mess. Other countries don´t politicize, work together on federal, state and local party levels and thus are more free in their actions.

There are consequences from making pandemic response political.

The virus was not ignored in 2020 and, quite frankly, with everything we went through, its mind boggling someone could even make such a statement. Remember though, while some European countries were reporting double digit mortality rates ours was no where near those highs. Significantly lower mortality rates does tend to cause populations to come to different conclusions. Our government had missteps, like all others.

I have faith in the people, not ever in the Government on how our lives should co-exist. Centralized organization requires slaves when their  absolute power over our minds and bodies will be our greatest collapse for humanity in modern human history

Vote them all, they are all the same. Have them just take care of the small stuff

I really am so disappointed in some of these individuals who play a prominent role within our government. Where is the integrity? Where is the courage to do what's right?

We typically do not require our "leaders" to exhibit ethics, morals, honesty or integrity.  A good thing as so few have such things.

Why there was such a demand for Trump to have them is unknown.

We are living in a Shi- Storm, due to the new administrations ignoring COVID for months... Biden said he did not know the new mutation was a supper spreader. We were discussing the new motion out of Africa a month ago.   And now we are left with a shortage of test kits, wait weeks for appointments for boosters, and some are still dwelling on how Trump handled COVID.  What hypocrisy.

Have you ever witnessed anything like this phenomenon? Seems like Biden could run around on the White House lawn in his underwear, in the snow.  With his new dog chasing him,  with his mask facing the back of his head, and some might say -- it's great to see Joe is staying fit.

I totally give up. I am beyond  SMH. I am rubbing the sides of my forehead.

I feel like it was like senior abuse when he has to face the press with questions.

Let only, the most abuse upon all of us ever.
Biden's dark speech on warning unvaccinated of deaths and illnesses to their families this Christmas and winter. Is the most hateful and decrimating  serious speech of ever heard  in my life

This is not even funny anymore, oh well, I'll cheer up tomorrow.
