I am not so sure that every one does. If they do perhaps it is because many people fear the unknown. Good question, Kevin
I think it is definitely the fear of the unknown. It's not something you will have to do more than once in your lifetime. I know of someone personally who had a near death experience and fears death no more because of the peace she saw and felt. Heaven.
For me it is the point of entry to death that I fear. Death is peaceful. Death is our reward for hard work and suffering. So I guess it's the suffering I fear. I've known to many Cancer victims to think otherwise.
Humans have always been scared of the unknown and what they cannot control. No one truly knows what happens after death if they say otherwise they are a liar or stupid.
Do they?...................................................................................
I think that the main stream media portrays death as something scary and awful, so therefore, people believe that it is something to be feared.
It may depend on where they are in their lives. When I was young, I feared death because I did not know anything about it. But now, I don't. Death is just a new door to go through. However, I firmly believe that we do not stop existing when we die. I believe if you know Jesus and God, that death is the beginning and your real home is heaven. And, to get to heaven, you have to die. We are all given so much time on earth. Some people have short lives here and others live much longer, but death is not the end, it is just the beginning.,
People fear death because it's the end, forever loosing the world as we know it for something other.
The martyr - atheist or theist - embraces this with unquestionable faith and does not fear death, to enter it calmly.
Not everyone does.
If you think you are your Homo sapiens body, then death would be the end of all. If you realize that you are an immortal child of God, then things look better.
If you eliminate ego (the false, physical self) entirely, then the spiritual true self can awaken. Then consciousness is no longer dependent upon this physical form we wear.
I've been outside of my physical body and seen the world without Homo sapiens eyes. Death is not so fearsome to me. I do have a fear of pain, still, but not as much as I would otherwise. I would regret death if I did not yet attain spiritual awakening. But I hold faith that I'm on the right path and that what I do in this life, if I don't make enlightenment here, will transfer to the next to help the next "self" awaken the Lord within.
I am nothing compared to the child of God which resides within me.
We have the instinct to stay alive, thus we resist death. However, not everyone fears the end of life. I've met many people who are at peace with the idea death (a natural end) and life as they know it on earth.
However, the fear comes from the unknown... not knowing what happens next... whether the soul lives on, and if so, how will we know how to die properly so that our souls go to a good place. Perhaps these are the thoughts of the dying (in hospice).

Why is it that some people believe that they will remain even whence their physical bodies are gone? Does science back this up? Does scripture?

What do we fear most? Death or the process of dying?I know. Weird ? But sometimes, we fear getting to a moment of truth more than the truth itself. Is it the anticipation that can be more stressful than the result? Is it the fear of the unknown? Do we look at dying as an event and death the result...

Do you think god was given a name out of fear?Let me explain my logic, which would you be more terrified of? If a doctor told you that you have a serious case of the Flu or if the doctor told you that you have an unknown illness? Most of you will immediately answer the unknown illness, even if it's...
