Why did God not tell Adam he would suffer eternal torment in Hell?

God told Adam that he would die the day he ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Why did God not tell him that he would also suffer eternal torment in Hell?

Because he won't. Hell is NOT a firey  place, hell is the grave. The dead know nothing, feel nothing, and experience nothing. If you're dead therefore you would not feel any torment.

In addition to Guesser's answer, you are missing the point of the account of Adam. If you are a fundamentalist believer, the point of the account is how sin came into the world and the problem of free choice and love. If you approach the Scriptures in a more critical and progressive fashion, the same holds true, but you also understand that the entire account is an allegorical story (but no less true).

I think Hell is more of a christian doctrine.  In the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible there was not such concept.  The Hebrew Bible talks about the "sheol".  But the notion you have about hell came from the Christian perspective.  So whoever wrote the Genesis, you can guess he did not had a christian perspective when he wrote about Adan.

I agree with Krillco and Gusser in what they said.

Krillco said: "...but you also understand that the entire account is an allegorical story (but no less true)"

    Totally agree.

You know, Searchinsany, that is a question that I have never thought about before. I am afraid I do not have an answer (at the moment), but you have given us yet another reason to pick of our Bibles.  :0)

I will check out your Hubpage as well, to see if you have already answered it in one of your many thought-provoking, inspiring Hubs.

    Peace be with you.

    Thank you for your comments.

Personally I don't fit into the Fundamentalist or the Progressive 'camps' regarding the interpretation of the Scriptures.

I do believe the Scriptures are the inspired Word of God; however I also hold the view that it is important to interpret the Scriptures both literally and metaphorically according to the context and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

I don't believe 'Adam' was an allegorical story, I believe he actually existed. If Adam did not exist then the New Testament would collapse like a house of cards.

Luke traced the genealogy of Christ to Adam the person, not to an allegorical story. Paul referred to Adam as a person six times in his Epistles. Jude endorsed a statement by Enoch, stating that Enoch was '...the seventh from Adam…’

Taking the above into account I have often wondered why God did not warn Adam that he would suffer eternal torment in Hell. At present I am preparing a Hub on the subject and thank everyone for their contribution.

Although we may have varying opinions I hope we can agree to disagree and still have fellowship together.

    Many thanks.

    But, He did!

Adam was meant to be the " head"........of the family.

Yet, he was SO infautated with Eve, that he, succumbed to her.

Men are not leaders...................they are not.   They are followers of women.

Some of you, might perfer more vulgar language or explict terms.

    Man.....failed.

    Women arose.

THAT is how it is,, today.

The true FACT of the matter is...........man failed to protect woman!    Therefore, you sweat, labor, break your back, stress your hemmroids, suffer, and still seek " women " and the " pleasure" that they can provide, without ever daring to question the costs.

Silly men...........the strippers and dancing girls, are laughing all the way to the bank!   Yet, WHO is arrested for immoral behaviors?

What part of being " outcasted", " seperated from" or " cut off from God," is giving you the greatest trouble of understanding?

Do not be stupid here, do not feign misunderstanding.......if you do these things.....you simply show yourself to be argumentative...........

Man was created to walk with God
Woman was created to be the companion of man.

    Eve was decieved.........

Adam, lacked the backbone to correct her.

Is this too simple for you?

Great question since Adam and Eve are the epitome of disobedience against God. God didnt tell Adam that he would go to an eternal place of torment in hell, because there's NO SUCH PLACE on earth or inside the earth where bad people go to, to suffer eternally.

God told Adam that he would simply die and return back to the elements of the earth (dust, dirt), from which he came from or was formed/created from (Genesis 2:7, Genesis 3:19, Genesis 2:15-17)
