Why is the modern church not experiencing the power that Jesus promised?

    King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. John 14:12

The very verse you have posted says nothing about a "group or church" it's on a personal level;"Verily I say unto YOU".
Matthew 23 1-12 explains Jesus's thoughts on the church.

I understand  that people not a building is "the Church". That's my point. You quoted me "group or church" . Where did you pull that from? Do you even understand the question? Matthew 23:1-12 is about hypocrisy. Is that your answer?

Actually, in King James English, "you" means "all y'all" (as they say in Texas). If he were speaking to an individual, the King James would have rendered it "thee" or "thou."

@holity stkill the Church is the people not a building, The question has to do with the promises of Jesus Christ and why we are not appropriating them. I thought my question was straightforward.

Jesus valued the idea of people gathering in his name, but churches don't always do this.

What does "in his name" really mean? Somehow, I think that merely mentioning the name, "Jesus," is not what he had in mind.

Jesus said that salvation is for the sinner; not for the righteous. The "righteous" think they are, but they are not, because they are not humble. The sinners, if they are hungering for righteousness, they will find it, because they are humble.

Many in the Church are not humble, but think they know it all. They have salvation all figured out.

Some think that the universe is only 6000 years old and make a big deal out of this with scientists, who they condemn. But I have found a timeline in Genesis compatible with those of science, showing that humility and hard work can find more in the Bible than the literalists will ever find.

To me, the most valuable passage for understanding is, "Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life" (2 Corinthians 3:6 KJV).

This means that understanding requires more than the lazy view of the literalist.

The Catholic Church claims Peter as their first Pope. I wonder what he would think of that dubious "honor." If he was the first Pope, then he was the only one to have walked on water, albeit only for a moment, before doubt set in.

I have experienced many miracles this lifetime. With each one, I learn more about my true relationship between my true self, ego, and my physical body. I learn more about my own personal fall from grace in the Garden and my eternal relationship with the Heavenly Father.

The key is this :"He that believeth on me,"
Most people talk about this but how many actually follow through.    Scripture says
Luke 17:6  "If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.

In order to see these things we must not only talk about them  but also ACT.
Scripture says that we must believe what we ask will come to pass and that takes a step beyond just believing it is possible, it also many times put you in a position where if it does not come to pass you will be embarrassed.   SO it is talking about a realm of belief that is beyond what most people are willing to walk in.
But those that are willing to take the risk will see these things happen.
I have seen storms stopped, tornadoes moved to a different path, cancers healed, tumors dried up and many more amazing things because of stepping out beyond the normal realm of belief.
So my answer is because few are willing to take the risk and actually lay it all on the line.

because teh modern church is just another creation of man. the true christ has been lost sadly. but this is the natural order of things. true spiritual energy dies when the carrier dies.
