If not all, at least most of.
For some, money seems to be fruit of all evils too!

No, as one famous preacher use to say, "the lack of money is the root of all evil". The bank robber is evil because he doesn't have any money. Life goes a lot smoother when you have money.

Life is better WITH money than WITHOUT.  People without money do some very egregious things that people with money would never dream of doing.

Gmwilliams...so, only the poor lie, cheat, steal, murder...people with money would never do that according to your statement, right?

As I recall, the quote is about the love of money rather than money itself. Money is merely a device of commerce. It has no intrinsic good or evil. Value in or from it is created only by human belief, attitude and choice.

Well said. And how do you feel about the popular quote of the Buddha that desire is the root of all human suffering?

    2. Attikos profile image79

I think that like all other human motives desire leads to outcomes of all sorts good and bad, to ends that cause suffering and others that cause joy.

Power is the root of all evil. Money is representative of power so there is a misconception but make no mistake, it's power. If it were money then we wouldn't hear these stories of the rich committing murder, theft, rape, etc... With a pocket full of cash, what would drive this desire to still continue with these crimes??? Power.

it is the power that money gives, starting with freedom that makes it so attractive, so back to money...

    3. Cre8tor profile image80

Root cause - instinct. It's built in to want to survive in ones own way without input from others. And NiaLee, $ could be replaced by so many things (water food energy) we've just made it $...for now, thus, back to power. ($ will b of no value 1 day)

No! Money is just a tool.
It's the (worshiping) of money that leads to evil behavior.

  8. taburkett profile image59
    taburkettposted 11 years ago

nope - just another element of the establishment that generates greed.
the root of all evil is human emotion that entertains the greedy conception.

    1. Emanate Presence profile image69
Emanate Presenceposted 11 years agoin reply to this

Could we also question whether good and evil exist outside human perception? Is human emotion the root of all evil, or are charged emotions which are not resolved or released the source of all conflict? And what are some other ways for humankind?

The verse you are alluding to is 1 Timothy 6:10, which reads "For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil. and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many gift.'  It is not the money, in of itself, that is evil or even the root of ALL evil, but rather the placing the pursuit of money (wealth, riches and power) as ones primary ambition. When one puts accumulation of wealth and "things" above the pursuit of God and ones fellow man, that is the evil. Wealth can be used for good and so the money itself is neutral. The warning was given to believers who were being led away from God's path for any number of reasons.

celafoe, to be fair the Bible says, "For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil. and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many gift." It is the root of all SORTS of evil, but not ALL evil.

    3. celafoe profile image52
celafoeposted 11 years agoin reply to this

the interlinear bible, a direct translation without added words states
"for the love of money is the root of all evil".  most translations have added words that are not there in the original texts.  but your way still shows it as root of all evils

    4. Mitch Alan profile image82
Mitch Alanposted 11 years agoin reply to this

If, as you seem to be indicating, the love of money is the root of ALL evil, then why is it a sin to covet you neighbor's wife? It is commandment and therefore a sin to break it and by way of that definition it is an act of evil. Therefore, "a root"

    5. celafoe profile image52
celafoeposted 11 years agoin reply to this

.   Because something is a sin does not make it a root.   Root means the actual underlying reason for sin.  Love of money means not happy with what God supplies and would affect all areas of  life, a distrust of God. desire for more or different

    6. Mitch Alan profile image82
Mitch Alanposted 11 years agoin reply to this

Precisely. So, what is the root of adultery? It is not the love of money, therefore, the love of money is not the root of ALL sin, but the A root of many kinds of sin. It is a subtle difference in meaning, but a drastic difference in understanding.

Great question jabelufiroz. I have to share the first thought I had was an image of bundle of cash planted in the ground. A money tree had sprung forth and the leaves like many images so dollars for leaves. Then I pondered the picture seeking meaning.

What rang a  bell is that underground money is the root and it is the evil. I ponder. Does that mean the black market, piracy, and etc is the evil? Those undermine the economy and then things above tend to collapse. Wow! How interesting. Those roots grow creating a network underground, yet oddly they support the plant.

I remember reading the root tends to grow the distance of the breadth of the tree branches as same = same for distance. Those odd runners are the ones that go after a supply of water during droughts. They continue growing.

    Well, I dun'no . . .

AN EMPHATIC NO. It is the LACK of money that is the root of all evil.  People without money tend to steal and go into illegal activities in order to get money.  Poor people are the ones who force their children to quite school in order to work to support their families.  They worry when their food and other rudiments will come from.  They also are apprehensive as to whether they will have a roof over their heads.

Lack of money means a quite precarious and limiting existence.  People without money have limited choices and have to content with inferior goods and products.  They also have to be "happy" with lack of medical, dental, and/or other types of health care.   Their children have to endure inferior schools with second rate teachers and/or little books.  Poor children tend to have inferior education which will be to THEIR disadvantage in life.

Lack of money also means poor nutrition.  Good nutrition costs money.  Poor people get inferior food products which little or no nutritional values.  They cannot afford beneficial proteins such as fish and steak because that is beyond their budget.  They also cannot afford choice fruits, vegetables, and other highly nutritious foods as those also cost money.  So they have to consume junk food and foods that contain carbohydrates and fats.  Notice, many poor people are also the most obese because of the foods they consume.

Forget about housing. If one is poor, he/she will live in the worst neighborhoods.  God help the poor person when and/or if the neighborhood becomes gentrified, he/she will most likely be displaced or more likely,HOMELESS.  People who are poor are becoming increasingly homeless with the high housing prices.

In other words, being poor is crap.  Money is one of the most important things in this world.  When one is socioeconomically affluent, he/she have MORE choice in life.  He/she can live better, have more ownership over his/her life.  A socioeconomically affluent person NEVER has to worry about where his/her next meal will come from, when he/she will live, and how he/she will  educate his/her children.   Any person who believes that money is the root of all evil is intellectually challenged to say the least or needs a good psychiatrist for he/she is extremely mentally ill.

A big part of it, it becomes more and more visible everyday that people steal, kill, cheat, hurt and more for money or more money.
Because some want tremendous riches, they destroy nature, animals, other humans or make them suffer. In relationships, I have seen how the management of money in a couple or friendship, the things we own or money people think we have can make them behave bad, or how the pursuit of riches can make us forget essential things like our health, needs, family, friends...
I see somebody I love working very hard for money, then investing in the wrong places, going crazy because of failures and then doing it again, again...and it always making more money that makes him lose money and work harder to gain that money back.
We need balance, limits, principles to know when and where to go, or not for money.
