    I understand.
I was raised Baptist, and I saw both the good and the hypocrisy in it, the same as in all churches.  My experience was that the good outweighed the bad;  but not everyone has the same experience as me.  I learned there's no perfect church except that Spiritual Church that believers all belong to.

I would just like to exit tonight with a word of encouragement for all true Believers.....

    Never give up.
The fields are white for harvest, in all the world.
We are laborers under His command, and should always keep striving to spread the Word;  and when the cross gets hard to bear, we have His promise that He is always with us, even to the end.

Born-again Christians-------what are you doing tonight?
I've been pondering on the word "resist" in the Bible.
Resist the devil (and he will flee from you.)
Resist temptation (from human sources as well as the devil's directly, by fighting it/them?)
Resist via prayer or via words? or both?
That word has a meaning that can be applied two different ways, don't you think?

Tonight I'm using it as ....gotta get some sleep and not even think about it til later!  ha

Just wondering if anyone else has ever dwelt on the definition and usage of "resist".
    ?

Good night for now.  Might seem strange for me to invoke a discussion as I'm getting ready to turn in for the night, but I'm a procrastinator.  (Is that a sin?)
    Talk to ya later hopefully.

    Hi Brenda,
Sometimes resist seems to be simply standing firm and not being pushed. Other times I have believed it to not be distracted from my objective. Depends on the situation I think.
      God Bless, Holly
PS Tonight I am dealing with paperwork sad

For me resist is about resisting temptation. Resist the temptation to not do things because I don't like doing them smile

Resisting temptation is key. Our ability to resist temptation is given POWER through Christ in us. This, I believe is an important aspect of our relationship with Him. I believe, Twenty One Days was speaking to this in regard to what we are striving towards. It is to be remade in God's image of us. To understand His perspective of who we are, we can better apply it to our lives. If our goal is to be more like Jesus, then we need to have the right perspective of what that means. In truth it will not be revealed to us, but through us to others. Resisting temptation is one aspect of this remaking. That it is challenging is our incentive to treat each other with love, compassion, understanding and forgiveness. Especially ourselves.

To you, does it mean being a martyr, literally and/or spiritually?

Or a warrior, literally or spiritually?

Sorry, I'm probably off on a different tangent.  Just what's on my mind in relation to resistance.

No need to be sorry. Actually, you ask a good question, and one that I was discussing with a Christian brother this morning. I believe that God has a purpose and a plan for every person. When we choose to put our lives in His hands, we must be ready to be re-made. For example, in my own life I have lived out many of the Scriptures regarding sacrifice. I didn't go looking for it, no one would. But in the sacrifices I have seen God's hand and the love of Jesus Christ. There is Scripture that speaks of separation of family, even within our own household. Is that a show stopper for you? Job? House? Money? I believe like with Abraham, God wants us to be happy. He must be first in our hearts, minds and souls. Working through what that means in our lives is challenging.

We have all heard the saying, "This ain't no dress rehearsal." I disagree. I believe that what we do hear in this life, and on this planet determines how we live eternally. The Scriptures do not speak of eternal death, they speak of eternal life. What I believe is determined here is what kind of eternal life we will have. Does that make sense?

So, your gods purpose and plan is to have tens of thousands of children starve to death each day?

He's waiting for the rest of his children to help with the work and quit denying him. Those are the lives that are suppose to be helped by atheists but they've lost their way and their lack of faith is leaving some uncared for.sad

The Scriptures speak of eternal punishment too.

The "separation of family" means a spiritual separation and a separation and/or non-participation/non-condoning of certain behaviors and beliefs.   Only a literal separation if needed.\

..It makes sense if you mean there's a choice between heaven and hell (or the lake of fire).

It doesn't make sense to me if you mean there's a ladder of rewards in heaven...
    ?

    1. Paper Wolf profile image61
Paper Wolfposted 15 years agoin reply to this

      No ladders.

Eternal life with God, or eternal life separated from Him.

Whatever we can conjure of what those two circumstances means is probably minuscule to what the actual experience will be.

    What about your life?
    Your literal life.

Are you willing to be a "John the Baptist" or "like Jesus"?
Or do you cling to life and compromise something, anything, for dear life?

  13. profile image0

    or even your personal reputation?

Do you compromise your standards for that?

I'm not actually asking you to divulge personal information;   just a general question about your view of how a Christian should sacrifice and/or resist wickedness.

Let me put it this way. I watched the movie, The Passion of Christ, and realized that's it. 1 Corinthians 2, "For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

I have some friends in Tulsa, and they lost their daughter to cancer. They had a celebration of life instead of a funeral. One thousand people showed up. A testimony of her life of 28 years was her absolute faith during her battle. At one point in time as they were going to do chemo-therapy on her, they shared with her that it would cause her to lose her hair. She said, I will not lose my hair to this cancer, I will lose my hair on my own terms. She had her mom come in and cut her hair. She then donated it to locks for life. Those kind of testimonies and the lives that were changed in her family and outside of her family was staggering. Why does God let these things happen. Changed lives. To bring people closer to him.

Was this sacrifice, not one that she sought, worthwhile? I believe she would say, yes. How much those that we make, short of that? It is the picture of Jesus.

      Refuse medical treatment, Christians!!

I agree. Science is the work of the devil designed to stop the Work Of the Lord. Do not take medical treatment.

Do not let this girl's death for Jesus ------ persecution for loving Jesus actually......... Do not let this get in the  way of you living FOREVER in the Lord's Loving Embrace.

Remember - refuse medical treatment and live for the Lord. Picture Jesus. Would Jesus have taken medical treatment? I think not................. wink

Oh - that kind of ruins the story a bit. She took the chemo and cut off her hair because it was going to fall out anyways?

I didn't say it was, but, she could have left in the trash can rather than give it to a charity who would make a wig for a child who wanted one. You might try thinking in different terms instead of always thinking the Christians want your baby!

I think Paper Wolf is right.
    It was a sacrifice.
The girl took a tragic circumstance and, instead of wallowing in self-pity, used it for something good.  She resisted the devil's temptation. It is the good way; the way of Christ.

    1. Mark Knowles profile image60
Mark Knowlesposted 15 years agoin reply to this

I suggest a decent dictionary sweetie pie.

Making the best of a bad situation does not require an irrational belief to do so. Nor does it make it a sacrifice.

Unless you are saying that God killed the girl as a sacrifice?

My wife did the same thing when she was faced with chemo. And she did not believe any of the garbage you believe - you know - hating gays and being scared of women preachers for going against the Word. wink

So - prey tell - how was this a "sacrifice" if she knew she was going to lose it anyway?

      1. profile image0
Brenda Durhamposted 15 years agoin reply to this

Your wife sacrificed; she sounds like a wonderful person!
She was doing what Jesus would've done.
Whether she actually gave God the glory for it or not is the question that tells what fruit grew from it.
The Bible talks about how humans love each other.
And it says God cares for His children much moreso than that, even, if I'm not mistaken.  I should look up that Scripture.
I do know the Word says faith without works (and therefore works without faith) is useless in the finality of it.

The real truth is that Mark knows more about religion and science than most. He is also a happy successful non believer.
I must really stick in your throats that you have been unable to answer one of his questions in over a year and have to resort to the sort of crud that can only be responded to in kind.
Non believers are simply all the people in the world that can think. You lot have had your brain taken captive by the neurotic ramblings of a few retold old stories from a bunch of sick men! lol lol lol

I don't doubt this a bit myself. Mark is very knowledgable about many things pertaining to religion and science alike. That being said, does he know God? Does he know Jesus personally?

No matter how much knowledge you get, you will have nothing compared to knowing Jesus.

But that is where you are wrong. I have been thinking a lot about death the last few days. Like a seed, the outer shell must die before the inner seed can actually live. When you look at me, you do not see the real me. You only see my outewr shell which will eventually die away to make way for the real me which is inside.

Jesus shed His outer shell amd is alive forever.

So self denial is a bad thing to you? It isn't hate that causes one to give of their own self. Truthfully, as much as I see many talk so much about hate and love and have things backwards, I wonder if anyone knows what love really is.

If I sacrifice myself to help others, do I hate myself? If I sacrifice buying myself a new bass guitar to buy something for my son, do I do it out of hate for myself?

When I was in prison I read a daily prayer book - in it there was a quote so I dont know if it was directly from the Bible or an interpretaion - but it said, "They who shout loudest about the crimes of others do so to conceal there own crimes", this reading has stuck with me through many years, especially here in Ireland as many politicians have been shown to be corrupt and criminal, many church leaders have been exposed as criminals and conspirators and so forth, and yet these are the very people who would condemn others and fill tabloid headlines with their hypocracy, this is an honest contribution and I would be interested to know if the initial verse was an interpretation or an actual quote from the Bible smile

This is well known in Psychological circles as a rule of thumb. The big squawkers are candidates for this sort of behaviour.

I honestly don't know if that direct concept is in the Bible or not.

There are of course some similar verses....

But it's not true in every circumstance that the one who shouts loudest about crime is doing so to conceal his own crime!

I think you're very jaded or paranoid about the leaders of your country, irish, because you've mentioned it time after time.

I'm pretty disappointed in the leaders of my country too.
I shout pretty loudly about them!   I also loudly proclaim against things like abortion and gay marriage being made into law.   Yet I'm not concealing a personal crime.

You're shouting pretty loudly about your country's leaders too!
Are YOU concealing a crime of your own?

We have the right to be upset about corruption and fraud and hypocrisy.  But it's not fair to label EVERYONE who speaks out boldly about something, a fraud or hypocrite.

      See what I mean??
