      Good question.

People believe in God or a Universal Presence for varied reasons.  There are those who view God or Universal Presence because they feel that such a presence as a higher extension of them.  There are those who feel on this earth plane that they are one w/God or the Universal Presence.  There are those who view God or the Universal Presence as a friend, a companion.

Then there are those who contend that they must believe in a God or this Presence because they feel that God or the Universal Presence is responsible for where they are.  They contend that God or the Universal Presence must be paid homage to because it was the former who give them breath.  They assess that if it weren't for God or the Universal Presence, they would be nothing.

There are those who believe in God or the Universal Presence because they were taught to do so by parents & religious authorities.  They believe in a Higher Presence because of family &/or religious tradition. They don't question the precepts but believe because it is mandated by family & tradition whatever it may be.

There are those who believe in God or a Higher Presence because of fear.  They feel that if they don't believe in God or a Higher Presence, they will face retribution either natural or supernatural.  They contend that those who don't believe in God will be eternally damned & they don't want to be damned for eternity.

Then there are those who don't believe in God or a Higher Presence because they contend that such a belief system is infantile & reduces people to non-thinking automatons.  They see that belief in God or a Higher Presence as an outgrowth of having parents.  They also assert that believing in God distracts from being the true owners & ultimate responsibility regarding their lives.

Your explanation in the second paragraph is a rational one. We believe in God as we feel that everything that is out the reach of any reasoning power is answerable only by God and through His actions. There are many happenings in the universe that can be attributed to God's supernatural powers.
One more approach for believing in God is our innate feeling and experience of some wonderful joy, satisfaction, or bliss (whatever it is). We get some unexplainable feeling within ourselves which we associate to as God's Love towards us.
