Oh, you mean those kind of suspenders. In the UK we call them braces. Suspenders are something else here.

LOL - Yeah I came over here looking for a hub about THOSE suspenders, not braces!  Oh well, onwards...

For the yanks:  UK "suspenders" = US "Garter belt"

I don't need them but several years ago there was a designer line of matching Beatles ties and suspenders.  I bought one pair of suspenders that happened to be on sale when I was in the store.
So now I have one "Back In The U.S.S.R." tie/suspenders set.  it's kinda cool but I think I only wore them once for a performance in a college class.

LOL! About the worst evidence for the fashion statement that suspenders can make.

I do like them on skinny guys who wear suits.

I'm sorry, I was away for a while and didn't give it a second thought.
They're the things that hold a lady's stockings up. I actually wanted to say that I do like to wear them sometimes, but then saw that a different type were meant.

  8. Jayne Lancer profile image90
    Jayne Lancerposted 13 years ago

Now I've told you that, what are they called in the US (the ones for the stockings)?

      Garters, and they are hot.

      1. Jayne Lancer profile image90
Jayne Lancerposted 13 years agoin reply to this

For us, garters are the band that hold the stockings up instead of suspenders ... so what do you call those?

        1. ediggity profile image60
ediggityposted 13 years agoin reply to this

That's what I thought they were here also. They are little bands that hold up the ladies stocking.  It would look funny if there were suspenders hooked to the stockings.  Imagine Larry Kings suspenders hooked to your stockings.

Jayne Lancerposted 13 years agoin reply to this

smile The suspenders are suspended from a delicate, lacy belt around the waist to hold up the stockings.

Britain & America, two nations divided by a common language!

In the UK suspenders are used to hold up stockings, in the US they are called garter belts.

In the UK, a garter is, indeed, an elasticated band that goes around individual legs and is used to hold up stockings. Men also used to wear garters until recent times; knee garters were worn just below the knee by men under their suits to hold up their socks - they were a regular feature in bedroom farces and would be seen when the leading man (invariably) lost his trousers.

In the US suspenders are used by men to hold up trousers, in the UK they are called braces.

In the UK all hosiery whereby the stockings are attached to a panty are called tights. In the US, the sheer version are called pantyhose, whereas only the heavier denier opaque ones are called tights.

Americans do a lot of things differently to the rest of the world and get confused when confronted with terms other than those to which they are accustomed and all I can say to that is........KNICKERS! (lol)

      The same thing - braces.
Confusing huh?   There is a website in the UK called www.confused.com but it is not for anything other than selling us insurance qoutes. Lol!

  18. profile image53
    mudbugposted 13 years ago

I have always thought in the US the garters were the single elastic band around the top of the hose while a garter belt went around the waist. In the UK are suspenders the entire piece or just the part hanging down that attaches to the hose?

I bought my girl some garters
    at Woolworth five and ten
She gave them to her mother
that's the last I'll see of them
