   Yes. It takes too much visual and brain concentration to text a message and drive safely at the same time. There are already too many preventable accidents involving driving while doing other things. We need to pass laws because having people use their intelligence to stop doing these things obviously does not work. Put a cell phone in one hand and your putting the lives of innocent people in your other hand. That is not right!

    Absolutely!! Anything which diverts your attention off the road and takes you closer to disaster knowingly should immediately be declared illegal.

    Absolutely. In fact it is now illegal where I live (Ontario, Canada). Also, you are only allowed to talk hands-free while driving. People are worried that everyone just hides the phone below the steering wheel where no one can see and this is causing more problems. Oh well...

    I believe that "distracted driving" is illegal in nearly every state. This law predates cell phones in most cases. Further some insurance companies studies have indicated that there is no benefit to hands free devices as it relates to distracted driving.

    I would say most definatley ralph imagine a surgeon texting while opperating. I won,t compare the two .but it seems concentration is the key word here.

    When you are driving that is what you should be doing period.  Not putting on make-up, calling for any reason or texting anything. How can you pay attention to driving 100% when you are reading and playing with a key board.?
    Here is the other side of that.  go ahead & text that 2 seconds you looked at the key board you just rear ended a car! at 60 miles per hour, the car is spinning, things flying air bags going off and other cars just hit you.
    Was it worth it?
    It takes less time than you think to change your life when your in a 2000 lb plus vehicle doing any speed.  Besides who are you to endanger others with your reckless behavior.  You want to play then pull over & play other wise DRIVE! ! ! Pay attention arrive safe, drive to the road conditions Slow down and arrive alive

    Definitely, and thankfully it is here in England. Mobile phones are a distraction when driving, even when you're talking on them (also illegal here unless you're hands free), let alone trying to text.
    
    Sadly, the act being illegal is only a small step in the right direction. Society (that's us) needs to frown on the practice. Only then, as happened with social pressure reducing drink driving, will the accidents decrease.

    Yes it should.Texting, like talking on your cell distracts you from focusing on any dangers that might occur. But can we really limit it to just texting and talking on the cell? How about people that choose to pretty up while driving or people that decide to mess around with their ipod trying to find a song? I think people need to be more aware of their actions and what effect they may have on people if the worst were to happen.

    I think it should be avoided and might be considered illegal. Before declaring something illegal we need to prove that someone was texting while driving- we cannot know that. So, there is no way to prove it unless someone sitting with the driver complain against it.

    I can't think of how many times I've been behind some erratic driver who suddenly slows to crawl and, on passing them, see that their attention was not on the road or even guiding their vehicle but actually staring at their cell while texting! Brilliant idea...absolutely it should be illegal!

    Yes, all use of cell-phones while driving should be illegal.  Also, looking at map displays on the console or dashboard should be illegal.  Even having map displays in cars should be illegal.  Just when I start to think people can't get any stupider, they come up with a new way.
    
    What is the attraction of all that crap?  Your new or newish car will be an expensive boat anchor in a few years because it will be irreparable or tremendously expensive to repair.
    
    I, just this morning, was looking at a classic "bathtub" Porsche, similar to what Paul Newman drove up and down PCH, in Malibu, in one of his old movies.  Manual shift. Instrumentation was speedometer, tachometer, and few gauges.  A radio.  Beautiful in its relative simplicity.
    
    Did anyone see the movie "Wall-e"?  Wired, stupid tubs of lard.

    Absolutely, the most inexperienced drivers on the road are the very drivers that are texting the most. We're losing too many of our brilliant young in accidents without cell usage.
