   another good question, although I need to got to my profile page to see this, never really noticed..ooops I did it again..not very observant am I ?

      LOL, well, it is good to know that I am not the only one who doesn't know.  However, I just now noticed it after six months here on HP!  LOL  Maybe is has not been there that long, hopefully, for my oh so observant self.  Thanks Linda!

   Notice that NING|GLAM SOCIAL is on Hubpages own identification bar at the bottom of every Hubpage page, including our profiles and hubs and all their own help pages, etc.  It's part of their official ID, quite obviously & undeniably.   
   
   From what I understand NING is an enormous, very successful social network with which obviously HP has become affiliated. It's a business decision, obviously.
   
   I've read some member comments suggesting various speculations about why. I see no official explanation, however.  That suggests to me that they're possibly 'trying it out for size & fit'.  Again - a business strategy.  There's a lot riding on their decisions.
   
   Obviously as members, we're on their bandwagon, for better or for worse.  Perhaps it's in a transition mode for HP.  Meanwhile we're not 'married for life' to Hubpages, but while in the relationship, we're in no position to question their administrative decisions unless we're asked for our opinions.  It's not a democracy.  ;-)
   
   (BTW - I learned that they could choose to hide it in their ID bar, but that wouldn't mean it was abandoned.  Our choice is to wait and see or go our own way, it seems.  Wise to keep our antenna poised.  Unwise to push them to action prematurely. It will backfire on us to do so.  I'm for trusting them to do what WORKS for them - and, hence, for us as members. They may be facing challenges of which we are unaware; they need to respond judiciously.)

      Wow Nellieanna, you are a person in the know!!!  Thanks for the great detailed answer.  I just happened to notice it this morning, and just did not know what it means.  I was not questioning them, just did not know what it meant.

   I asked my son what it meant.  He said," Google anything you do understand."
   This is what I found.  I think I am somewhat offended is a women's technical social network is called GLAM.

   I noticed the same thing recently, and I also didn't have a clue to what it meant. So I've did what tirelesstraveler mentioned in an earlier answer, and I Googled it. This is what I saw - Glam is primarily an ads business, and perhaps the most important fact is that Ning creators can now run Glam ads in their community. I really am not sure if that answers my question or anyone elses, but it's a rough idea at least. Keep on hubbing

      I agree with Faith, interesting and disappointing.  Personally I prefer keeping my networking base simple, but they don't let me.  I don't seek exposure but feel I'm tossed around like the ball in a Cowboys game!  Yet others wanting exposure must try

   I joined Ning years ago when it was new and free. It was a good site then. You could start a forum, newsletter and have online chat for any group, topic, etc you wanted to start. Then they decided to stop being free. They gave enough notice for people to decide to pay or try setting up their group somewhere else. Of course, people were upset about the change.
   
   The main thing I didn't like about Ning was that they never set up a directory so you could search for a topic in their network. Instead it was all hit or miss. If you searched on Google for a topic or event you might find a group on Ning - but you could not find any groups by searching Ning itself. I really thought this was stupid, to be blunt. If they wanted members why make it hard to find a group to join?
   
   Anyway, I knew Ning was still around but I thought it was fading into the woodwork. There are so many social group sites and networks now, free ones, that I didn't see a place for Ning now.
   
   One other thing which was annoying about the change from free to paid was that every user login ceased to function. You had to sign up all over again. When I asked for help they sent a useless form letter. I think I'm still a member on one or two surviving groups but I haven't gone back to Ning to check.
   
   I'm not sure what being part of Ning will bring for HubPages. Likely it will get a bigger commercial focus and become all about marketing and SEO. I hope they don't go too far.
