   How do you feel about a hubber making reference to their hubs in answers to questions?
   
   Everyone wants people to read their hubs,  but is there a point that you think this can be excessive?

   I think it is ok if someone answers the question and also makes reference to one of his or her hubs that goes into deeper detail on the matter, but it is not ok to just link to a hub as the answer itself.

      In that case, windygreen, I would agree that that is just plain bad taste. If someone only answers questions where there is an opportunity to promote him or herself, then that is a sign of more interest in personal gain than in the hubpages community

   I think it's natural to plug one's hubs ("A Brief History of Max, Who Was A Dog") because its something they have created ("The 7 Best Internet Comedy Videos/Series of All Time") and is special to them ("Maddox Bellacole and The Child of Two Worlds: Prologue"). They should be proud of their work ("The Basic Rules of Etiquette for the First Time Karaoke Singer") and have that desire to show it to a wide audience ("Along The Shores Of Your Heart").
   I suppose it can get a bit excessive though.

   I do think it can get to the point that it becomes spammy. That being said sometimes the best way to answer a question is to leave a link to a hub that as already answers the question. But the hub should legitimately answer the question and I do feel there is a need for discernment.

   I have to admit that it bothers me. I did it once and felt like a complete self-promotional a$$.  So I try to stay away from that but you do see it a lot here.

   I have answered over a hundred questions and i can honestly say I have only done this twice.  Each time the questions directly related to a hub I had written and I only mentioned in my response that I had actually written a hub on the topic.  I didn't bother linking it because I felt that if the questioner liked my initial response and wanted to read about my thoughts and experience in detail they could go to my page and find it themselves. 
   
   I would never just link to one of my hubs as an answer to someones question though, I like to give my answers some thought and I think each question deserves an original response.

   I think it's appropriate if the mention of or referral to one's hub is directly related or germane to the disccussion. As long as it's not done frequently or with a link.  If a fellow hubber is intrigued by the mention or really wants to read your hub, he knows how to find your profile without the link.

      If you provide a link and it has to do with the subject, there is a good chance I will click on it. I am a lot less likely to go to your profile and try to find the hub. It may border on self promotion, but if the link is relevant, it is helpful.

    It comes down to relevance. If what is in their hub answers or expands on your question, I think it's fine to share. If there isn't a link or the link is tenuous, then that's spam.

    Anything may be overdone. Too much water can kill. No, I don't mind a hub plug if the hub being referenced is pertinent to the question.

    I note that you asked this in regard to Q&A rather than forum questions. Some might feel differently about the two.
    
    Since Q&A permits "make a hub about it" as one way to answer a Q, it can't be completely wrong. If you've already got a hub about it, however, there's no way to connect it to that button. A direct link saves time that might otherwise be spent trying to figure out which of his hubs he intends--especially if he is somewhat expert in that area and has several similar hubs. But it's spammy to post the link without reference to which part of the hub is relevant, or in what way.
    
    As for your follow-up Q about those who only answer Q where they can advertise their hubs: It's a subtle line. I notice procedural Q more than opinion Q and only want As from those who are subject matter experts. I hate As from people who clutter it with speculative "Good Q", "Google it", etc.

    I answer many questions in Q&A because I enjoy reading the different responses and sometimes ask questions to get a broad spectrum of hubbers' opinions, occasionally using this as source material for a hub.
    Sometimes I see a link yes, but this doesn't put me off IF IT'S RELEVANT TO THE QUESTION. What's really annoying is some nerd linking to their unrelated hub without any thought for those answering genuinely. This is spammy. But it is rare in my experience.
    If I answer a question knowing I have a hub on the topic I sometimes mention this as I know it will help, but I don't link it, I leave it up to the questioner to seek it out.
