If you go to http://hubpages.com/my/fanmail you can deny the fans you no longer want. I'm not sure what actually happens when you do this but I suspect they no longer get notified of your new hubs or activity.

I don't think you can. They are like the paparazzi and only go away when they decide to leave.
You can deny comments from followers.

On the other hand, if you are being annoyed and harassed by someone-- take the matter to [ team @ hubpages . com ] and explain your problem.

If your going to write about love & relationships you will get unwanted followers but they are not allowed to annoy you at least too much !

Duh, of course that only works if they have left fanmail tongue

Even then, you can only delete the fanmail, not the follower. Sorry.

Barry, my objection is the kinds of followers that use scripts to become the follower of virtually anybody on this site. It has nothing to do with what "following" is supposed to be about, in my opinion, and it ought to be prevented.

I think it would be good to at least slow down mass following,  Captcha is one way, and certainly isn't annoying for this of us doing normal following.

If that is seen as too onerous, they could limit the number of people followed per day.

Thanks PCunix, this is definitely spreading. These types, new accounts, are literally following one new hubber per second, day in and day out. I cannot believe HubPages hasn't implemented a way to prevent it.

I think Hubpages is sort of 'on it' about this problem.  I notice one follower like that of mine (I have two) has been banned.  When I press on her name, her profile page has a message from Hubpages that she has been banned.  But she's still on my list of fans, so I don't know if that has any effect on my scores.  (She's a 20, I think.)

I take what you say as an issue I havent had an issue with it for three years here on Hubpages.  the more women stalkers I get the better as far as i am concerned but i get your point although i am not usre what adverse effect it has on you ?

maybe i am too thick skinned  Maybe  ?

No, they are not directly bothering me, but they aren't adding any value to HP.

maybe they do add value omly hubpages would know that ?

I doubt they think that,  as it is quite the opposite.  Bad money drives out good and an article site full of spammers cheapens the site.

It doesn't bother me personally. It bothers me that these spammers are permitted to abuse the "follower" system, using scripts to spread their spam. It is my impression that spam is spreading on HubPages at the moment, and unless you want a spammy site, something ought to be done.

I have no real unwanted followers. If someone pestered me, we'd probably find some way to deal with it. Thanks for your contribution to this discussion.

Ditto on that one Richie. They follow most of us...I let them follow me but I don't follow anyone who hasn't got a hub under their pen.

I think almost all of us have followers who've never read a word of our hubs but follow in the hope of being followed back (or some such strange reason!). No one can delete them, though we can disapprove fan mail by them. Unless someone is harassing you, I really don't mind being followed by whoever wishes to. It's their choice; mine is to follow them back in return or not.

And btw. I do believe that fanning 'sprees' negatively impact hubber score, so it's doesn't go completely unchecked either...

I saw this earlier, one person has 60 followers and she has only been signed up less than 24 hours...

I have been here 6 months and have only just scraped past the halfway mark.

I have no idea why they would want to grab so many followers who would never even look at their hubs probably, unless it is for other nefarious schemes.
