I was reading a blog on monetizing adsense and the writer mentioned that you could lose both your Google Adsense and your blog if you put brand names into the title, because then you'd be driving traffic to your blog on the tails of someone elses trademark. Is that true or was he misinformed because many blogs and articles use brand names to contrast and compare things? For example people will read a hub called Apple V Mac, but how would anyone know what you were saying if the hub is called Computer A Vs. Computer B? Do I need to deativate or retitle hubs with a brand name in them?
I know if I was a company I'd want people talking about my product and using my name brand. And it's part of free speech to tell people what products are great and which ones are not up to snuff.
Or am I worrying for nothing?
If you were a company you definitely would want people talking about your products and using their names, but you definitely WOULD NOT want people using your brand. That is why trademarks exist.
Like everyone else here said, definitely never use a trademarked name in your domain title (or blog title, as that's in the web address, too).
If the name of your blog was 'Apple Products', Apple could initiate a C&D. (chances are they wouldn't, unless your blog is very prominent - but you still risk breaking adsense TOS) So, if you had a blogspot blogged called appleproducts.blogspot.com, you would be infringing upon a trademark and risk losing your adsense account and get a lovely little letter from an in-house attorney that works for Apple.
If you're reviewing apple products and using that in your article's title, that's fine and is considered fair use.
So, you could have a site called computercomparisons.com and do reviews for Apple products.
Sure, companies want to get their product names out there, but if you were to use Apple's name to drive traffic to your site, you'd be piggy backing off of their success, their advertising, etc. Again, companies DO NOT want you using their name brand that they have spent millions developing. what if you also included their logo on the site and included weird propaganda or porn or something and people thought it was their site or had an affiliation with the company? (Obviously you wouldn't, just providing an example.
By only using product names in your titles, you're not necessarily piggy backing off the company, rather providing reviews about the products and this wouldn't violate adsense TOS.
To the best of my knowledge the writer is wrong.
Many brands prohibit their affiliates from bidding on the brand name derivatives on Adwords, but that is completely different story
Registering a domain name with a trademarked brand name can meet with trouble ( i have received a c& d from eday myself!) ..so if your blog is hosted for example with godaddy (who is well known for pulling web pages without contacting their owners) - and for example is called edaysucks.com
eday may contact your hosting provider and can have your site taken right off the net.
Adsense also does not approve of cybersquatting or trademark infringement or any other illegal content...so they could theoretically can you also
But if your blog was called auctionreviews.com and you titled a story ebay sucks.com - neither ebay or adsense would have recourse against you
If your blog was hosted on blogspot. or wordpress or a page on hubpages then you have no issues, as your title is just that a title, no different than a headline in a newspaper...you are not asserting ownership or possibly creating brand confusion
i am not a lawyer, but this is my understanding.
The only possible issue is the domain registration of a trademarked name which has no relevance to a hubpage
ABSOLUTELY stay AWAY from godaddy:
http://NOdaddy.com
^^ enough true to life horror stories to last you five lifetimes. While they seem a viable choice.. when you get burned it will be badly... and you will get burned at some point.
ICANN rules require you to have current contact information in whois. If you're using public whois you CAN used munged contact information like
f9a9s9c9i9s9t9s@a9c9l9u.o9r9g--remove9sandeverythingafterdashes.com
which any intelligent sentient person can resolve into
fascists@aclu.org
if godaddy wants to take your domain they allege the automated spambots were unable to reach you at the published whois. And right well they shouldn't: that was the point. A REAL person could have contacted you. Godaddy will snatch your domain. If you're on the receiving end of slightly less fascism you will have the 'opportunity' to pay an excessive extortion fee to recover your domain. lucky you? no.
moniker.com is nodaddy.com forum recommended but doesn't provide hosting and have elusive tech support. While they suck the least they too have inane policies. The best is password expiration that requires you to call them. They keep super fantastic phone hours that makes that one a real joy.
Use 'cheap' as your primary criteria? You're going to get hosed.
---------
godaddy (http://NOdaddy.com) web hosting is a joke.
Go ahead and try to use the space YOU'VE PAID FOR. Go ahead. If you interact with support EVER you're account is flagged for routine 'inspection'. If no interaction you may well be flagged anyway.
You'll get a delightful "stop using your hosting" letter saying that you cannot store files on your account. Godaddy hosts appears to have ZERO understanding of apache, a webserver technology. Files are stored and the software serves them up to requesting visitor's web browser.
Can't store files?
You ain't got not website.
Sunforged - I totally agree that is my understanding as well
a) never host anything at godaddy (registration is fine host elsewhere)
b) tradenames in the domain name can mean they come after you - but all they can do is get you to take down the domain - names in post and articles titles are fine
Thanks for reassuring me. Most of us try to play fair but there are so many gray areas.

You get so many websites with brand names in their domain names, specially in exact keyword matches. [ for example, bestrolexwatches.com (imaginary example)]. What about the copyright implications for these websites?Has any of the hubbers got such such a domain name/website anytime?

I am not too keen on Wordpress. It looks pretty and clen but the advertising options are limited. I use blogger because it's easier to use and gives me freedom with Adsense, but I really hate the limited templates. I am thinking of going domain and website for my recipes. What are your thoughts?...

I read the success stories, but are there any hubbers that make 1000s on here? Curious on ones potential.\I know "some" successful full-time affiliates make 1000s from adsense, but any exclusive to hubpages?
