Well I guess Hollywood feels the need to absolutely mangle another all time classic movie. They want to remake the " Wizard of Oz ". Is it just me ? Or does this kinda piss you off ?

Sounds absolutely awful.  I wish Hollywood would leave the classics alone and get some fresh ideas!

this isn't surprising.  Hell, Hollywood already attempted to remake "Psycho" already, and their currently having the hit cult classic "Straw Dawgs" remade coming out next year.  Personally, why fix something that isn't broken?  The first film was perfect the way it was.  Plus, there's like several books based on the "Wizard of Oz" that we have yet to see turned into a film.  Therefore, why not make a movie off one of those other books instead?  Oh well, anything for a quick buck i guess.

Wasn't there a black remake of this movie already? i.e. all the characters were black, starring Michael Jackson & D. Ross

Hopefully they don't let Tim Burton direct it, I think he's screwed up enough classics.

I like to think of "Hollywood" as the creative people who work there.  This remake fever is actually the giant movie corporations that put up money for movies these days.  They want their movies "pre-sold" with a built in audience - a safe investment.  I'd like be believe "Hollywood" is still filled with creative people who could change the world for good if they could overcome the evil corporations that are controling them.

Maybe I should write that movie?

All good point's there. Cinema is supposed to be an artform. Now it is another lame product.

Stevennix2001posted 13 years agoin reply to this

Actually cinema is an artform, depending on which movies we're talking about exactly. Sure, there's a lot of commercialized ones that are released solely to make money like "Transformers", "The Matrix", and others.  However, you can't say all of them are like that because then you'd be insulting a lot of great independent films that ARE ARTFORMS when it comes to modern cinema.

My only advice to you buddy if you want to see movies that are made to be works of art rather than commercialized garbage, then try to watch more independent films then.  Those are very much worth watching, and often offer very unique stories to follow.  Suggestions I have for you are "American Splendor", "Ghost World", "Blair Witch Project", "Memento", "Insomnia" (Both Original and Remake), "Following", "History of Violence", "Reservoir Dogs", "Chasing Amy", and "Clerks."  I could list more, but I don't want to overwhelm you right now.  Just try watching some of these films, then tell me what you what you think of them. smile

By the way, I don't know if you ever watch foreign films at all but if you do, then I highly recommend anything by Federico Fellini and Akira Kurasawa, as all their films are cinematic gold that are sure to entertain you if your looking for a films that encompass the meaning of the word ART when it comes to film making.  Anyways, I hope that helps. smile

Edit:  By the way, I apologize for not responding to this post sooner, as I didn't even notice this until recently, so I thought I'd help you out here buddy. smile

heck no, they remade Alice In Wonderland and I love love love it!  They might do something spectacular with the Wizard of Oz - with the new tech filming it could just seem like an entirely different picture. Probably not better, but very different and its such a wonderful story it could be great.  I know that the original was not at all like I imagined the book when I read it as a little girl. Maybe they'll make a movie more like I imagined the story and not leave out some of the great pieces that were missing in the original.

And at any rate, nobody forces anyone to go see a movie - if you think it would ruin the old one for you, just don't go.  now, Gone With the Wind is something else - there is no way in heck they could make that again.

You may be right. Perhaps the original is too simplistic for today's tastes.-- even though the simplicity and the sense of childlike wonder is what made it great.

As for GWTW-- yeah hard to improve on that. Actually this is one of the first films I went to, where I had previously read the novel.  Except for the fact that it left out part of a Melanie's secondary backstory-- it was remarkably true to the  written storyline.

and four hours long!  movie makers are seldom ready to make 4 hour movies anymore - maybe that's a good thing!

Yeah, your right Mega. You do bring up a lot of good points.  I just hope the part about them using the exact same script isn't true, and they are going to have some writers tweak it a bit so it doesn't come off as a generic rip off of the original.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.  Who knows?  Maybe this might end up to where we'll see the other books about Oz come to life to the big screen too in sequels.  smile

right - our library had all the Oz books and they were so worn out they had to recover them and tape the covers up!  We loved all those stories so much.  I would love to see some sequel stories done into movies, although I don't really remember much of them, I just know I was on the waiting list for a couple of them.  "Return to OZ"!!

I really like the idea!  I think with new animations etc it could be really amazing, providing they get the right director on the job.

You'll still have the classic movie to watch whenever you want to.

I am with you on this, Tony.
A huge part of the movie's charm is its simplicity.
Do you think Hollywood would/could restrain themselves from the special effects?
Nope, agree that "classic" means "not to be messed with."
    Is NOTHING sacred anymore?

I have to go with the "not such a good idea" side.

One thing that surprises me is that there were quite a few Oz books in the original series - why not pick one of them and make a sequel?

  6. Rochelle Frank profile image90

I think it is a bad idea-- but then I'm old enough to have seen the original when it first came out, and the images are severely imprinted.

I am bound to not like the new one.

Right! I had forgotten about the Dark Side of the Moon synch thing -- that's trippy.

Tony -- Beatlemania. Gag. Then again, the original Beatles movies were all pretty gaggy too. Although George did meet Patty Boyd during filming of A Hard Day's Night, so it wasn't a complete waste...

They already made a remake like someone above said.  This is a pic of their version of the flying monkeys.  These monkey-type characters had wheels on their feet.  Well creepy.

Actually KCC, that was the "Return to Oz" which was supposed to be somewhat of a sequel to the original one.  although I do agree, its nowhere near the level of the first one. smile

your right it was kind of creepy.  however, i do like the premise of it, as it kind of had a dark gothic theme to it if you ask me.  Something i wouldn't mind if they added that to the remake of the "Wizard of Oz", as that might be interesting.

I read a great many of the books as a child and would love to see them set to film.

So its a shame they are not attempting some of that untouched material.

otherwise i would love to see a good reimagining of the wizard of oz, if its not good, i can just walk away and do something else.

Just keep Peter Jackson away from the rights! Tolkien is still spinning in his grave following the appalling desecration of Lord of the Rings. What bright spark decided to give him The Hobbit?

    1. profile image0
Stevennix2001posted 13 years agoin reply to this

Are you serious?  The film series not only made a lot of money, it was also widely critically appraised.  Plus, each movie was nominated for an Academy Award, and the third film won best picture.  Sure, it's not as great and as detailed as the books, but what movie adaptation of a book ever is?

The point is, Peter Jackson is a freaking genius, and did a wonderful job with the series.  I'm just glad to see they've decided to go through with the prequels, as I can't wait to see what we have in store for "The Hobbit" movie.  I heard they've been working on the character design for Smog for years now, during preproduction, so I'm curious to see what they'll come up with. smile

    sunforgedposted 13 years ago

    prequels?

    1. profile image0
Stevennix2001posted 13 years agoin reply to this

Yeah, you didn't hear?  New Line Cinema was going to make two prequel movies to the "Lord of the Rings" franchise.  The first one is due to come out around the holidays in 2012.

      1. sunforged profile image70
sunforgedposted 13 years agoin reply to this

        I didnt hear!

The only other Tolkien Books I was aware of were The Hobbit and The Silmarillion (something like that)

I was being picky about the "prequel" word smile - The Hobbit is more of a "prelude" - it does happen in an earlier timeline but it was  childrens story, so always considered its merely tangential.

For movie branding purposes, I guess prequel will do

I agree.  Although it surprises me they're going to use the exact same script in this remake, rather than having another writer interpret their own version of the story.  Oh well, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

How is it possible for Hollywood to be dried up creatively, yet there are multitudes of creative people, around the world, who would so willingly take their place?

I think it's high time Hollywood heard, loud and clear, how people want better, high-quality, original movies.  Not poorly made re-makes of classics that everyone already loves.

I, for (another!) one, will not go to see a re-make of the Wizard of Oz. imho, if it can't be improved, leave it be.

Hollywood is remaking everythung else so this doesn't surpise me since the Wizard of Oz is in public domain. The 1939 version isn't true to the origional story to begin with so any new version would be okay.

If they can do it justice it would be awesome! I have a feeling it will either be great or a total hot mess. Nothing in between. It would be nice if they kept it as is but made it 3D. The broadway play Wicked was incredible! That absolutely amazed me how they made such an incredible story which lead up to the story told in the Wizard of Oz. Brilliant writing, besides the acting, etc. Such a great story. If they really want to make a movie they should make that part into one. Have Wicked the movie, even though not sure they could do that justice.
