What drives you "nuts" about other drivers?

One thing that bugs melike nothing else is speeding drivers. I occasionally go over the limit, and even then slightly. But it seems no matter what speed you do, someone is overtaking. If it were by by a little, I guess I would not mind, but it'son the verge of insane.
Doing 80 in a 60 zone....or 120 in a 90 zone.    or worse yet  80 in a 40 (work) zone. ( I speak in kilometers/hr) The media is always harping on about speedbeing a major factor in road fatalities. Reports of (often young) drivers dying on the roads. No-one seems to listen, and take heed. And then to add to the stupidity, they drink as well.
The end result, sadly, is that its often innocent people who arein their way that pay the ultimate price... STUPID, with a double capitel STU...

Speeding is almost always stupid-- but,
After about 40 years of  driving (maybe more), I have begun to see the experience  a bit differently.

      1. Presume all other drivers are either stupid, crazy,  reckless, non-attentive, self-destructive, self-important, talking on the cell phone, eating drive-thru food, smoking ,elderly, distracted or perhaps have medical conditions or disabiltites.

      2. Leave space because of #1.
      3.  Make allowances because of #1.
      4. Drive carefully because of  #1.

        That's very sage-like advice Rochelle,

I used to have to drive from Chester to Manchester every day (40 miles or so) and so got very familiar with what I like to refer to as "cocks of the road" invariably it was BMW drivers, who seem to take offence if you use the fast lane at all, and will get right up behind you until you pass the car you're overtaking and then get out of their way.

The thing is like Jeremy Clarkson says: BMW drivers realised they were loathed and have now moved...to Audis!  And it's true, now I'm out of University and back on a driving commute you definitly spot these drivers screaming along.  The worst of all though at the moment is White Van drivers, or worse, their  diminuitive cousins the half car back half van!

I've had so many thinking they're Lewis Hamilton screaming past, but worst of all was when I was nearing my offramp, one just started drifting into my lane, I beeped, he kept sliding over, I held the horn down and started flashing my lights too even though we were practically level, I ende dup nealry off the road but then he turned back in to his own lane.

As I drew level and began hurling abuse, he was just hanging up his cellphone and threw it on to the floor of his van......typical!

I swear driving regularly is adding years onto me!

i seem to be having a lot of close calls lately due to other drivers talking on their cell phones.

These people are usually engrossed in their conversation and will drift into my lane or stop without warning or turn without a signal. I've also been cut off. It's a little tough to remain cool and calm when you are dealing with these types of drivers on a regular basis. hmm

I used to get upset when others drove to slow, or to quickly but psychologically our brains are all moving at different intervals, nobody can understand the other person who does not use a turn signal, or drives under or over the speed limit, the only thing we can do is relax as we will all get there at one time or the other. I always think of it this way, we are all supposed to get where we are supposed to be , when we actually get there. Why be in a hurry, or impatient I would rather get there safely , then pissed off or angry because I believe the other driver is not driving the right way. I don't cuss or scream, I just simply acknowledge the circumstances. smile

I agree that the best approach to idiots on the road is "o well" and let it go:  however, since we're venting - I literally have to use huge amounts of self talk and self-analysis to not smack the driver who won't let me turn either left or right, including changing lanes.  Here in Florida, there is some kind of rule that seems to be known and understood by others easily and myself not at all, that whatever spot you're on, whatever lane you're in, ITS YOURS, BABY.  and your's alone.

let no man put ass-under that which you have gained by road hogging.  You take your life in your hands just to make a lane change.  They honk, do creative waves, and think the speed limit only applies to the far right lane.

I could write a book, or just say "o well."   smile))

We were at a light and wouldn't you know it the light was red, as soon as it turned green the guy behind us honked and honked , my husband couldn't even remove foot from brake and apply to accelerator, he gives the guy the finger and of course wouldn't you know it the guy gives us one back. Our son's comment was "Dad why is everyone throwing birdies today?" As you can tell he was very alert and had been riding with Dad wayyyyyyy to much. LOLOLOL big_smile

I do not get angry when driving, because I know nothing about the other driver. I consider myself a  very experienced driver, but realize that judging others on the road is crazy. Even if someone is on the phone, I don't know why they took or made that call even if illegal. I try not to use my hands free phone when driving, or do anything else that is distracting, like getting angry.

I said try, because most road rage is just projection. In other words, what would make me angry is others doing what I have done myself.
Think of it this way, how many times have you been abused when someone thought you were doing the wrong thing because they did not see the whole picture.Offer the same benefit of doubt.

In general, I don't take anything anyone else does to seriously; because I know they either don't know better, maybe didn't plan to make some stupid move, or may even be jerks in life (which isn't my problem and is theirs).

I'll admit to feeling the blood pressure rise when someone tailgates.  It irks the heck out of me, and it really used to make my blood boil when my kids were little and in the back seat.

I have to agree with aka-dj, about speeding, though. This happened over 30 years ago (so at this point discussing it is pretty much as without emotion as telling my eye color would be; so I don't want people to think I'm being a "big drag" on a relatively light-ish post).  Still, I don't think enough people realize that "it can happen to you" - and they just keep speeding.

My two girlfriends and I were hit by a speeding driver (27 years old and apparently had a fight with her boyfriend at a lounge, so she zoomed away from the bar).  Two of us survived.  When people think speeding is "what everybody does" or a joke, boy, it does irk the heck out of me (needless to say). I know people can't/shouldn't go around living in fear of being killed out of the blue; but no matter how any of us thinks it's something that happens to other people and not us, that just isn't true.

For some people, as Misha said, it takes aging some.  For others, it can be a matter of being robbed of thinking like a young person earlier than scheduled.    (Rochelle, I like the clever rules you posted.  smile  )

AEvans, I guess when we have "up close and personal" experience with this kind of thing it does have its impact.

It takes aaging alright. You drive differently when you get older. The sad part is that many of these young ones won't ever get there, to realise it for themselves. I don't understand why they just "don't get it".
