Ann:
Don't'cha me trying to insult a group?
Being insulted is a personal thing.
If someone tries to insult you and you don't allow it by consideering the source and walking away...how can ya insult a group?
Some of them may allow themselves to be insulted, but others of the group may laugh, flip ya finger and walk away laughing.
I can't be insulted. I won't allow it.
How about you?
Qwark
labels?
You take away respect of the individual.
It is easier, though veiled and cowardly, it allows someone to indirectly insult the individual.
Attacking a "group" knowing the person your directing your comment at is part of that group is an insult.
The "group" does not exist, it is a fiction. Like Mickey Mouse.
The only thing that is real is each individual human being. Labels allow hatred to course through society like a conduit.
If you insult the group, then you are insulting every person who belongs to the group. At least, each member will be insulted, because you've insulted the group as a whole.
So, to your question- Yes!
The biggest problem is those who take the insult personally. Once they have, then other things ensue from there.
A group who's majority is uptight or have a stick up their a$$, and makes things look bad for the rest, then it is the individual of the group to make those others accountability for their actions, but unfortunately, this rarely occurs.
It is generally very difficult to find any good result from an insult.
It would then seem that only an idiot would intentionally insult either a group or an individual as any results will be negative.
How about pointing out facts about the ideology of the group that tend to show the group in a negative light?
Or pointing out the bad things resulting from the actions of a group?
Is that insulting the group?
Or pointing out questionable associations of the group?
Should we criticize or insult public figures?
Criticism is one thing; direct insults are another. Pointing out "bad" things resulting from anothers actions that are the intended result and that they are proud of insults both their intelligence and your own.
Theirs because you intend to give insult to the fruits of their labors by pointing out that they were stupid enough to produce undesirable results and yours because you speak solely to cause anger in another.
Again, if your words cannot produce positive results then you are better off to keep your mouth shut. I tell this to my young grandkids all the time as they have a tendency to mouth off or insult adults around them, and the results never seem to be pleasant for them.
I would also add the criticism that you are pretty sure will be taken as an insult or that will not (hopefully) produce results you want to see falls into the same category. Only an idiot would give such criticism. It's like intentionally hitting yourself on the head with a hammer.
Facts are not insults.
Critiques are not insults.
If we understand the definition of words better, we'll be less thin-skinned.
Insults are subjective to begin with. What one person considers an insult, another might not.
What AC is tapdancing around is an exerpt from an article that Nazi and white supremacy groups were looking at making the Tea Party home.
She wants a rule that nobody can 'insult' Teabaggers by pointing out the elements of the group she personally might not invite to tea.
How about this: If you insult Obama, are you insulting all Americans? Does that mean that you, in fact Hate all Americans?
Just because you insult someone doesn't necessarily mean hate LMC.
Why thank you Cagsil!!
Been trying to say that forever.
Especially specious is accusing someone of hating a whole group of people because you criticize their leaders.
Wouldn't you say?
Most of the time, people don't intend to insult an entire group of people, just the people who best fit the title. For example, when someone is insulting the stereotype of a certain group of people, they most likely won't be specific enough to point out that they only mean the stereotype and they just go for the whole group. They usually leave it up to us to decipher what they truly mean.
But yes, all in all, if you say a group is stupid, you are insulting the whole group.
So, you're asking if I say:
"Conservatives are all red-necks"
Would I be insulting an individual conservative, like AnnCee or TMMason, or American View?
... yes? Obviously?
Or if I were to say "liberals can't keep a consistent view point to save their lives", then, Yes, i would be insulting Lovemychris, Doug Hughes, and Jeff Berndt.
it is an insult to do so, like a blind demographer
On a side note, separating the person from his/her ideas is a bull, it just deviates the responsibility
That is why I always take the direct an honest approach, blunt, no dancing around, AC. Then if they are insulted by honesty, truth and facts, they can take it up with their own conscience.
And if you want to talk about NAZI lovers, lets look at the Lefts' greatest hero of today...
