It has over a billion views on youtube. Did you think it was going to get this popular?

Yes. It should be. And it is. Very cool subculture.

The song is annoying.  I don't get why it is popular.

I know for most of the times I heard it I thought the words were 'condom style' until I saw a video on a TV show about 2012's greatest hits lol.

The world has never seen anything like Gangman Style.  Not the Beatles, not even thy mighty Justin Bieber has seen such popularity so fast.  On a global scale, 1 billion hits in English!  I can just imagine the totals in all luanguages, especially if parodies are included.

I am still for good ole' rock and roll. However what I think is the attraction here is that it is delightful, sort of exciting, makes you want to get up and jump about and most of all smile. If I can say that and I usually don't like anything too odd and strange then it is no wonder that lots of people enjoy this. Simply it's fun!!!!

To be honest while i don't like the way the "Mainstream Media" have over used the song and beaten it to death, i think as a piece of electronic music its alright, nothing to write home about but pretty funky to groove along with at the same time...

For most people, i think the novelty is the fact its Korean, but hey that's just my 2 cents ...

Good song smile i would dance to it at a night club while drinking and that's all that its really good for ^_-

I saw a group of senior citizens dancing the style in an exercize class and they were laughing and having a good time. It looks like fun for all ages. I want to see Kindergartners try.

I believe there are quite a few factors on why Gangnam Style got so famous ( and how exactly to make a song to become famous )

The thread gave me an idea for a hub ...

If you check the internet's history in famous songs ... we have:

    peanut butter jelly time
    souja boy
    Techno Viking
    party rock anthem
    gangnam style ...

So what do all these have in common:
peanut butter jelly time - kind of repetitive ( see how small children and internet users both like repetitive content) the silly dance of the dancing banana and a memorable beat
souja boy - no sense at all as well, repetitive, silly dance, memorable beat
Techno Viking - no sense at all, repetitive, silly dance, memorable beat
party rock anthem - no sense  at all, repetitive, kind-a silly dance, memorable beat
gangnam style - no sense at all (at least for the general public), repetitive, silly dance, memorable beat ...

so yeah .... every now and again there will be a song with no sense at all, repetitive, with a silly dance and a memorable beat, that will overwhelm the world wide web [: at least imo [[:

You are right that every so often a song comes along that affects a lot of people. Gangnam Style's distinct sounds with strange video images and inventive dance came together and struck a chord, for better or worse. When I was in elementary school, it was the Macarna. And then it was My Heart Will Go On. We'll all laugh about Gangnam Style in 15 years.

Well it´s sometimes annoying hearing this song more often at a party, in the radio stations and tellys in the Philippines, but it is funny to see how the people and kids dances even in the street when they heard the music played somewhere. Even my 5 years old nephew is a master of this gangnam style dance. Awesome!

I find it moronically stupid and highly irritating.

My 2 year old grandson does the dance all the time.
As soon as he comes into the house he says "Gangnam style on" wanting me to put it on the television.
I can usually distract him with something else, but he gets it on eventually. Must admit watching him do the dance is hilarious.

I didn't even know about it until right before Halloween last year. It's definitely catchy and the video is entertaining, but of course it's gotten played out like crazy and I think we're starting to get a little sick of it. It's still fun to watch all the little kids dance to it, they love it. It's amazing though how popular certain things become and how many people get roped into it.
