Why Is No One Air dropping Supplies to Tsunami Victims?

You see people lying on newspapers on hard gym floors covered with thin blankets and silver bags on their feet.   You hear about a lack of heat in buildings to stave off the cold weather outside.  You hear about people being left without overcoats, hats, gloves.  You hear about a lack of water and food.

Air drops have been done at least since WWII.  Why aren't there massive air drops of supplies that would bring those people some comfort?????????

Because those air boxes have to come from somewhere and last I checked, no one is volunteering to send anything over.

Aside from that, I think there's slightly more concern going on about the nuclear fall out from the plants that were effected by the Earthquake.

I suspect the logistics of it all is the sticking issue. I never criticized "W" over the Hurricane Katrina debacle. You can't plan for every disaster. You can try in good faith to anticipate catastrophes, but the execution thereof is where the Devil lies.

I don't know exactly why, but perhaps they are using more efficient methods of delivering supplies, such as ships and specialized aircraft?

Listen to the news. I just heard again a minute ago on Fox from a journalist on the ground there that there is no food, no water, no supplies. One hundred thousand people there where he is. He is still speaking. Amazing, he says, for a country like Japan which isn’t a third world country.

People are giving money BUT AIR DROPS ARE NOT HAPPENING.

My understanding is that air drops must be carefully planned to avoid injuring the people that need help.  It isn't an easy task and takes considerable time to mobilize the planes, load the supplies, and plan the delivery, IF it can be done safely.

We have several ships including at least one aircraft carrier off the coast bringing in HUNDREDS of tons of supplies every day. Other ships are on the way now after loading disaster relief supplies and helicopters. Try watching CNN instead of Fox. Neither network is downplaying the severity of the disaster, but Fox is determined to portray our assistance as inadequate.

ALL the supplies airlifted by helocopter will be distributed. The US Navy knows how to do this - I was stationed on a nuclear carrier. The process called VertRep (for vertical replenished) is pretty incredible. The Navy does it all the time.  A significant portion of airdropped supplies will be lost or damaged. Parachutes have no guidance system, they will fall into flooded areas or onto the heads of victims.

I watch CNN more than Fox.  The assistance is not arriving.  I don't know what you are seeing on CNN.   Where is your source for hundreds of tons, I'd like to think it is more than your imagination.  I REALLY would.

Our military personnel  has been ordered to stand off 50 miles.

It goes without saying that conservatives and liberals don’t see the world in the same way. Now, research from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln suggests that is exactly, and quite literally, the case.

In a new study, UNL researchers measured both liberals’ and conservatives’ reaction to “gaze cues” — a person’s tendency to shift attention in a direction consistent with another person’s eye movements, even if it’s irrelevant to their current task — and found big differences between the two groups.

Liberals responded strongly to the prompts, consistently moving their attention in the direction suggested to them by a face on a computer screen. Conservatives, on the other hand, did not.

Why? Researchers suggested that conservatives’ value on personal autonomy might make them less likely to be influenced by others, and therefore less responsive to the visual prompts.

Liberals may have followed the “gaze cues,” meanwhile, because they tend to be more responsive to others, the study suggests.

Fine, but they really need a survey to tell them that?

They could have just looked on these forums.

The Berlin and other previous air drops were carefully planned and didn't happen overnight.

Doing such a thing requires thoughtful, careful...

How can people be so pissy when discussing a situation like this?  I hope you have an opportunity to experience something similar so MAYBE you can grow a heart someday.  Small, very small people.  Makes me fear for the future knowing there are people like you in the world.

Pretty Panther and DTR, thank you for your reasoned responses.

I found one journalist at Fox calling for a Berlin type airlift.  I hope the idea gains some traction.

It's not like this just happen yesterday....SOMETHING should have been done by now to help these people (and pets..thank you).  There has been adequate time to create some type of plan....there has to be more that an entire world can do to help.  Karma is a "B" and it always gets its revenge.  This is not a situation that will go away by itself without help. So very sad.

Well it'll be a miserable night for tens of thousands in Japan.  Twenty degrees in the North with wind.

The shelves in Tokyo are sparsely supplied.  Tokyo isn't in the impact zone.

Our president has finally done something.   He has ordered products from Japan to be inspected for radiation.  Have Japanese ports in the impact zone been shipping stuff for the past six days?  Wow.  That's really amazing.  Probably shipping fish and fruits from Sendai.  Good call Obama.  Now why not send out swat teams to inspect our nuclear facilities?

Our partnership of two large churches in Indiana and Ohio own a large cruiseliner ship (size of a military hospital ship) and sent it to Japan on Saturday 3/12/2011 with food, clothing, blankets, doctors, and volunteers. We sent all that the ship could hold. It came back and we sent it out again with more. it will be back again soon and it will go out a third time. But it will barely make a dent in the suffering, I think.

Research findings must be interpreted correctly if they are to be of any value. The source you used "iowntheworld.com" is a blog site. Hardly a scientific source. You can read the original report at:

    http://newsroom.unl.edu/announce/todayatunl/133/1250

Here's another quote from that article:

"...Previous UNL research has delved into the physiology of political orientation, showing that those highly responsive to threatening images are likely to support defense spending, capital punishment, patriotism and the Iraq War."

...meaning conservatives are more fearful? Hardly. If you read the original article completely and not just the snippets you agree with, you find they're trying to find better ways for disparate political views to find common ground.

This study is gov't funded (NSF)BTW.
