What were the SCARIEST games you've ever played!?

   I'm talking turn the lights out, grab your mountain dew or rum n'coke, pull your blanket up to your chest and glare into your T.V./Monitor in terror, waiting for the next thing to make you jump two feet!
   -Left4Dead makes me jump sometimes
   -Doom3 definitely made me jump a few times!
   -F.E.A.R. was creepy, AND made me jump
   -Silent Hill was creepy for PS1
   -Remember that abandoned town level in Half-Life 2? Yeah, those creatures that ran up the sides of the building scared me quite well!
   Resident Evil series...creepy...
   Dead Space PS3...

      Number 1 all time would be fantasmagoria on pc. Also left 4 dead 1 and 2 were freaky and of course silent hill 2 is a scary game as well.

      Silent Hill was definately very creepy; I remember playing the game with my daughter in the dark - we jumped many times.
      
      Not sure if this was in Silent Hill or another game - but there's part of a game where you're in a haunted house and there are all sorts of odd things going on - you go down to the cellar have to perform several tasks to get out o the house - now that was pretty creepy - the sound effects were very atmospheric.

            I'll second that! I have only gotten maybe 1/3 the way through because the thought of getting back in actually intimidates me! Warning- Amnesia is Not for the weak at heart!

   Not one that I played personally, but I've seen footage and watched others play, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It's not a mainstream title, but if you're looking for something that will keep you up and make you jump out of your chair often I suggest giving it a try. It's a downloadable game, a simply Google search should find it for you.

      Update... just downloaded Amnesia from steam. Whoa! It is creepy, and I love all the visual effects..distorted eyeviews, heartbeats, labored breathing when the guy (you) start getti.g freaked out! Well done, good graphics all around...

   Silent Hill 2,3, and 4. I also played Silent Hill Homecoming, but I don't think it's as scary as older ones. The sound is and overall atmosphere of the silent hill games is extremely disturbing.
   
   Doom 3 was also really frightening.
   
   Dead Space did not scare me much at all. I mean there was tension, but nothing like the silent hill atmosphere.
   
   Fear also did not - more action in it than horror.

               Fatal Frame was available for original XBox and PS2.
               
               Phantasmagoria was an old PC title from Sierra by Jan Janssen, I think. It deal with some heavy issues.
               
               Pernumbra and Amensia are PC games and available now (usually off Steam)

                        Yes, start with the first. You can get away with playing them out of order, but the best experience will be from starting from 1 and working to 3.
                        One of the first two is really hard to get hold of...I don't remember which one, but it's somewhat rare. I was fortunate enough to grab one when I worked at Gamestop...just before the price started going up

   Well, this isn't really a board or pc game but when we were young teens, we used to go to the cemetary and tell ghost stories.  Typical for my generation, right?  This one particular night, we set it up so that one guy would hide inside one of the crypts.  It was just a big slab of cement pulled over a sort of cement hole in the ground.  We planned to bring in another kid unawares and during the storytelling, the guy was going to jump out of the crypt.  Instead we all left and left him inside there.  Sounds very cruel now but I'll bet he was scared good.  (Of course we went back later and got him.)

    The very first video game that I played that gave me the creeps was called Clock Tower, it was for Playstation. Of course there were also Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame. I would probably say that the worst of them was Fatal Frame. If you've played it you know what I mean, and if you haven't I would recommend you do. For a more recent pick I would have to say either Left 4 Dead or F.E.A.R..

    Siren for PS2. That game had me in permanent panic mode. Fatal Frame is also very good. My favorite survival horror games have to be the Silent Hill series, though, especially 1, 2, and 3. Doom 3 is just plain awesome, but you have so much firepower it's not really scary. Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (XBOX) is also genuinely creepy in parts.

    I would have to say...Fatal Frame, but I lean more towards the first and second as I have yet to actually sit down and finish the third.  I would definately recommend any of the Fatal Frame games to those that enjoy a good scare and storyline.  After having watched my friend play Silent Hill, I refuse to play it with the lights out now, so I'm going to have to say that as well.
    
    Siren was another game that made me wonder why I even bothered to turn the lights off

    I have a very powerful sound system at home and a fully light controlled home theater setup with projector. Dead space has often scared the shizzle out of me and had me screaming out loud. I can imagine if it was on a normal system it wouldn't have as much impact though.
    The one that I think really got me was silent hill. There is a part where you're running through a sewer and every now and again something swings down and attacks you. That was terrifying.
    Another is in the first couple of resident evil games. When you went into a room and heard the breathing of a licker in there, it was always scary.

    I don't play but I saw my son play Left for Dead. It looks very scary. Another game which stuck in my mind is Resident Evil. My husband and son were able to finish the game.

    I remember playing a game called Alien Trilogy, based on the Alien Movies, on the old Playstation One. The Xenomorphs were scary enough, but then you had the facehuggers that literally dropped down in front of you, covering the whole screen. <shudder> Still gives me the shivers now.

    Haha your picture sent me into flashbacks from my childhood that I repressed with years of crying and sleepless nights!!  Not only was that a scary moment (but when Jason randomly appeared outside was worse) but its also one of the worst games ever made, but I wasted hours upon hours playing it.  Well done.

    ArmA II with the DayZ mod for the PC... Zombie survival, open world with dozens of players, you start with nothing but the sound of wind, a pistol, and your buddies. If you want a map, you find one, if you want a compass, you find one, if you want live, you must be quiet, as your voice is heard in proximity. And theirs a full night sequence in every day, no light whatsoever. Its terrifying.
