What does optimal health mean to you?

Being as healthy as I can be.  Taking care of myself, doing what I need to do for me (eating right, exercising) and being able to enjoy each day without aches and pains.  Being healthy enough to enjoy my grandchildren and share in physical activities with them...these things all mean optimal health to me.

I feel good every day and think this is the optimal health. What can be more optimal than feel well? By the way, I see my doctor ... never, and this is optimal health too. It works for me and not necessarily for everybody. Maybe it's like it is because I'm an optimist. :-)

optimal health to me means that I am physically fit, I am in a positive state of mind and I do not get sick easily (free from disease). I find that being fit and having a good immune system saves a lot of money since I do not need to see the Doctor as often as less healthy individuals.

Optimal health is the condition of being at the peak of wellness within the parameters of your individual limitations. If a person has diabetes or an auto-immune disease, for example, following a plan for proper diet and medication, regular exercise, sleep, and mental well-being would keep that person in optimal health.

Taking care of my work and health. Freely do everything physically want I want. Eat all the food which I prefer without worry. Can participate in sport as I participate on school or college days.

Hello HealthCanada, optimal health is having a body and mind that is healthy to its maximum potential. I am as healthy as I can be. Some people have chronic conditions, but they manage them and are essentially healthy as they can be. I health is an activity. It is the continued pursuit of maintaining and promoting a healthy mind and body.

As a person seeking health, and as a life and health coach, I have a general definition that I encourage each person to make his or her own.

I am healthy when I can do what I want to do and am called to do free of excessive pain. For me, that means being able to do my work also swim in the ocean, walk on the beach, and do my qigong and yoga. (For someone else, that might be being able to run a 5k race or a marathon.)

I am fit when I remain healthy and continue to enjoy these activities, being steadily, or more and more, in a state of joy in my body.

I reach optimal health when I am continually optimizing the joyful experience of being alive in my body and mind.

Note: I include emotional, mental, creative, and spiritual dimensions in this definition. Being able to work, for me, means being productive, and also being creative as a writer and an artist. I'm not healthy without that!

I think as human beings we are always attempting to achieve optimal health.

    This is my personal definition.

Optimal health includes mental, physical and emotional health. It is the ability to wake up in the morning and be a productive individual while still enjoying the little things in life. Optimal health also includes having healthy relationships with others. If a person can clearly look back upon their day and conclude that they were emotionally stable, were able to do all of the physical things they set out to do, and love themselves, then they are optimally healthy.

I like your answer but I'm puzzled by the first sentence. Would you say that someone caught in addiction and not trying to stop, or someone depressed and not trying to work his/her way out of it is "attempting to achieve optimal health"?

To me, optimal health means having the best health possible. Being fit and not being sick or in poor health basically.

it means living victoriously in a world full of disease, and heart ache and economical downfalls.  it means walking joyfulling in the midst of pain and confusion. it means knowing that everything I experience in this life is part of a bigger picture.  It means all is well!

Being checked by a physician for everything that should be checked for someone your age. Having a regular plan for good diet and exercise. And lastly, cut out those things that are killing you like smoking and overly processed foods.

I looked up the meaning of the word "optimal" in the dictionary and apparently it is a word which originated from biology.  It translates into "most favorable" and the word has been around since 1890, can you believe that? In my own words, optimal health would mean very healthy then.

Luckily, at my age I can say that I have optimal health, in fact, I haven't used my health card since 2004.  When I lived in Toronto, I didn't have to pay for health insurance, but since I have been in Vancouver since 2007, I have had to pay for my health coverage. To think that I have never used the card except for immunizations against the flu, hepatitis, etc.

Yes, I'm shelling all those bucks monthly for a health card I hardly use, but you never know, right? Besides, I should be thankful for my clean bill of health. I got immunized against the flu for the first time in 2012, but guess what, I just recovered about two weeks ago from the nastiest flu I have ever had. Honestly, I thought it was not going away. I did everything to recover, took lots of Neocitran, vitamin C and Ibuprofen when needed.

Finally, I was lucky to get a six-day off from work and during all that time, I just slept and slept; and that did it. Now I'm back, as bouncy as ever. So if you ask me what optimal health means, I have to say that it is everything to me.  It's like a breath of fresh air, or smelling the flowers in the morning.  Thank you Jesus for giving me the gift of health, it is definitely more than wealth; it's funny how you only have to change the word from "h" to "w".

Why, Steve Jobs of Apple and iPad/iPhone fame had millions maybe billions but even all that was not enough to win against cancer. He finally gave up the fight.  I still feel sad about his passing, he was a great big idol of mine. So me, I thank God endlessly that I am alive and kicking!
