If a person close to you told you their child tortured and killed a puppy, what would you say?

Friends and family members come to me and ask for help in dealing with various behaviors.   I don't mind with minor behaviors, especially if it is simply a skills deficiency of either the parent or the child.  The question I posted was presented to me and I merely refered them to an agency that can assist her and her children, people far more skilled than I am.  This friend became angry at me for implying there was something wrong with her children.  I tried to tell her I cant help her, I am not a therapist, but she did not listen. Professionals should never try to treat friends or family.

The first thing that comes to mind is sadistic behavior in a child which we all know is signs of a serial killer.  I would have not gotten in that issue either but I would have reported it to the authorities that kind of behavior needs to be dealt with now before its too late.

You didn't state the age of the child. I knew a 3 year old who killed their kitten tossing it up in the air. When it came down it hit the ground and ended up dying. When asked why he did it he told his mom that daddy tosses sissy in the air. He was copying a playful act. Now if it was real torture it would also still vary based on age. Boys tend to enjoy smashing bugs when little. Also many other minor behaviors can lead to horrible outcomes to the animal involved without an actual intention for hurting the animal. However if what was done was something more servere I would do exactly what you did.

torturing and killing is never a good sign...and I feel you were completely right in refering them to an agency that can help. And I also agree that professionals should never try to treat friends or family...I applaud you and hope that this person seeks help for their child.

Well there's obviously something wrong with her child and he needs to get help ASAP.
It's been documented that sadistic children move on from torturing small animals and grow into sadistic adults that find joy/don't feel anything when they murder dozens of other people.

Thank you for have a common sense aproach to that question. I can'e believe a parent would even ask someone that- seems they should've gotten help immediately.

Basically, something is wrong with the parent if they don't think something IS wrong with their child, and secondly, did they watch the child torture the animal? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that anyone that could hurt an innocent animal has issues, whether it is a child or not.  Furthermore, that is the mark of a killer, serial killer to be exact.
