It depends on what type of donations you're seeking and who you're seeking them for. As a business, if I'm running a contest, I just write letters to other local businesses asking for prize donations. Many of them do donate. All you have to do is tell them who you are, what you're seeking, what you're seeking it for, and what you'll give them in return. Generally you offer them advertising of some sort.

First and foremost, it's critical you understand the laws behind non-for-profit organizations since asking for donations falls into this category, unless of course you intend to put the money in your pocket ... don't laugh or go "Oh please!" because these schemes have been done before. To understand the value and importance behind donating, might I suggest you work for a non-for-profit organization. It seems simple but trust me, it's not! Asking money from companies and individuals is much tougher than it seems, more so now than ever with these economic times.

The first thing to do is to offer some of your time to a well known charity, with verifiable attributes and numbers. You've got the Internet so do your homework! If your intention is to start your own charity, note that you are by law obligated to register in order to obtain a registration number ... you can't just go door-to-door and ask for money if you're not, unless of course you enjoy rejection and slamming doors.

Now lets says you're on the up-and-up ... your question, in a nut shell, is how to get maximum donations ... know what you're talking about! Look professional and offer valid answers. If you don't have an answer, please don't make one up and, oh ya! DO NOT RING ANY DOORBELLS OR MAKE PHONE CALLS AT 6PM WHEN PEOPLE ARE HAVING THEIR MEAL, nothing is more frustrating than being asked for money when the timing stinks. Also, be honest with people, be affirmative but not a bully and for Pete's sake, don't become a preacher if the person standing in front of you refuses ... it happens, so get use to it!

I don't have an answer. more of a question. I joined a donation website, so that I could receive donations to save my home. (I Lost my job of 15 years and have no income) desperate.

My site has a paypal donation button, but, I do not receive any donations through it. Only emails from people in other countries trying to get my personal information. I am assuming after 2 weeks that joining this particular donation site was a huge error.

I also receieved a lot of nasty emails from people saying that I am trying to scam them. I don't get it. What is the difference between donating money to an individual and the United way?, Red cross or the Salvation Army?

I can say that, at least 100 percent of the money I would get in donations would go to exactly what I need to use it for, and not

just 5 percent, while a corporation with high paid executives pockets the rest.

I understand that money is tight. but, if people can donate to these charities on a window of 5 percent of the money going to the people who need it...Why would they not doante to a person or orginization that pays out 100 percent?

It's very sad, the millions the big charities get. very sad.

You can vote each answer up or down to show your support or disapproval. You cannot flag an answer, but if an answer receives enough down votes compared to up votes, then it will become hidden.
