Family history, and genealogy - researching one's ancestors - has always held a fascination for me. Both my grandmothers came from England, so we were raised with stories of their life there before their families came to Canada. My mother's mother was born in England in the late 1890s, and we were fascinated by her stories of her life there as a child.

I was born in the fifties, just over six years after World War Two ended. My Dad had served in the British Infantry from 1939 until he was demobbed in 1947.The war had seen my Dad travel abroad to places he he had never visited before and would never visit again. Reading one of the St George's Day Hubmobs inspired me to create this Hub. Ask many English people when St George's Day is and they will reply something like "Dunno". The wording depends whereabouts they come from in England. Ask them what it is all about and the reply is liable to be something similar. So all of this has left me wondering why the English, myself included, do not celebrate St George's Day and all things English...

There was a time when all non English people thought that every English person spoke as if they were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. In other words everyone had a posh accent. The good old BBC only employed newscasters who spoke with a beautiful text book English accent. Regional variations were unheard of. If you wanted to get ahead in life, you had to lose the working class, Liverpudlian or Brummie accent, for example.
Personally I think all of this changed with The Beatles.
