People are caught up in they're own lives and their own problems? Others rush on ahead because they think they know where the conversation is going.   Where I used to work we had to go to a seminar on listening.   One of the exercises they made us do was repeat back what a person had said to you.  First aloud and then later silently.

We were asked the same questions we had been asked before the exercise and this time almost everyone got every question right.    it's a shame you have to have someone train you how to listen.  The person running the seminar told us by age seven we already miss 25% of what a person is saying.

Most people have in their own mind their own planned agenda, and people get distracted by the environment, sounds, sights and their own internal viewpoints. So if someone appears that they are not listening to you, consider what is going on in their own minds and what is going on in the surroundings. Also, tone of voice is important, because a lot of people may have trouble hearing low tones of voices.

I think there are many reason but the ones that come to mind are:

    self absorbtion
Too many things crammed into a day that make us too busy to pay attention
don't know how or don't know the importance of listening

Thanks for all the comments but when we talk about listening understanding, surely it takes place only when the mind listens completely -- the mind being your heart, your nerves, your ears -- when you give your whole attention to it.
