Faith Moments Today ~ October

Updated on August 17, 2014

Don't forget your Pastor(s) this month.

Fall celebrations are about to be underway, starting with the appreciation of our Pastors and those in ministry.  Columbus Day and Fall Festivals with the picking of pumpkins are favorites for many families.

The month ends with children roaming the neighborhood looking for their favorite treats as they celebrate Halloween.  With the world bidding for Christians to follow their lead, it is important that we remain focused on the Word of God in everything that we do.

Due to the amount of activities for this month, we have created two tracts for you to follow. You can use them both at the same time or from each tract, the read through the bible passages are still the same.

Select a teaching track: A or B

Tract A:

Week 1: Thou art my hiding place oh Lord.

Week 2: What if Columbus Didn't "Go?"

Week 3: Gathering of the Children: A Ministry for All

Week 4: Learn to Encourage the Spirit of Others

Track B:

Week 1 - In the beginning of this month’s October’s Faith Moments Today Bible Study, we will look at how Job responded in the face of adversity when he was given some really bad advice.

Week 2 – Do you have a problem controlling your thought life?  Scripture tells us it is possible to change our thoughts with the help of God through His Word.

Week 3 – Trusting God in the middle of suffering often seems unbearable.  But even through all the trials, God reminds us that His grace will be enough to see us to the other side of it.

Week 4 – What do you do when your children don’t understand why Christians are not to celebrate Halloween?  Celebrate the God of the Harvest and in all things give Him glory. Take a look at some things you can do to celebrate the Harvest Season.

Faith Moments for

October 1st-7th

Track A: Thou art my hiding place oh Lord.

Scripture Reading: Psalm 32 (also 23, 34 & 91)

"You are my hiding place (God); You will preserve me in trouble and compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah." (from Psalm 32:7)

It seems that trouble and disaster try to follow us all the time. Whether we are in financial ruin or family crisis, trouble doesn't play favorites. It will come on anyone who isn't armed with the Word. Ephesians 6 teaches us to always be prepared, and states the weapons we need to use in order to be delivered out of trouble. As Christians, we often turn to Psalms or Proverbs when we need peace, rest or comforting. But where does the lost soul go to find peace when tragedy or disaster strikes? How can they find peace or know how to be delivered out of evil and fear with no point of reference?

We can teach them by showing them in the Word how to be free from pain and suffering. It is our responsibility to get involved. Let people know their hope is in the Lord.

Track B: Stirring up Life

Scripture Reading: Job 7:1-8

There are times in life when we compare ourselves to the things of Job. Now Job was experiencing depression and had lost almost everything. His loving wife gave him some really bad advice, "Why don't you curse God and just go die!," she told him. How would you like to hear that kind of advice?

Instead Job remembered God gave him life and this depression will pass! He focused on God and not the depressing things around him. He stirred up the life inside him. Don't listen to ungodly advice that will pull you down and cause you to give up hope. Remember God is your strength and He will deliver you and carry you through whatever is stealing your peace.

Are you strong because you belong to Christ? Does His love comfort you? Do you have joy by being as one in sharing the Holy Spirit? Do you have loving-kindness and pity for each other?

Then give me true joy by thinking the same thoughts. Keep having the same love. Be as one in thoughts and actions. (Phil. 2:1-2 NLT)

Take Every Thought Captive

Faith Moments for

October 8th-14th

Track A: What if Columbus Didn't "Go".

Scripture Reading: Mark 16:15

""Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things,

which thou knowest not." (Jeremiah 33:3)

Today Columbus Day is just another reason for a three-day weekend, and some consider him just "another explorer" searching for new trade routes for personal gain.

People don’t realize Columbus has a divine call on his life to spread the gospel to the new world. He went against all odds and sought God’s wisdom to show him great and mighty things that he didn’t know. (Jeremiah 33:3).

Through the discovery of America, the Word of God has reached to the ends of the earth. Glory to God Columbus’ mission didn’t fail. From America the Word of God is spread all over the world through Internet, TV, radio, short-wave, postal, missions and other technology 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

This Columbus Day, give thanks to God for allowing this nation to be a beacon of light in the work of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Track B: Controlling Our Thoughts

Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 10:5

Have you ever been in your car and someone pulls out in front of you? Often the first thing we want to do is spout off a few choice phrases that are not Christian like. The Bible tells us that we have a choice in controlling our thoughts over every situation that arises. Confessing the Word of God helps to control our mind and thoughts. In other words, we are to capture our thoughts when they go against what God says.

We are to control our body and mind. James 3:2 says it can be done through and with God. Let the Word of God take root in your thoughts, and next time someone pulls out in front of you ... just bless them with a smile and kind thought!

"We all make many mistakes. If anyone does not make a mistake with his tongue by saying the wrong things, he is a perfect man. It shows he is able to make his body do what he wants it to do. " (James 3:2 NLT)

"... and every proud thing that raises itself against the knowledge of God.

We capture every thought and make it give up to obey Christ."

(2 Corinthians 10:5 NCV)

Your Grace Is Sufficient - There is power in the grace of God.

Faith Moments for

October 15th-21st

Track A: Gathering of the Children ~ A Ministry for All

Scripture Reading: Malachi 3:16 - 4:6

"And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." ( Malachi 4:6)

The Lord had impressed upon our hearts that He was grieved about His children. “Go get my kids and bring them back to me, before it’s too late.” I had been studying Malachi 4:6 for some time, and knew that God was referring to all His children and the time of the rapture. God revealed to us this vision of what we are to do.

“The LORD said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it will speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it: because it will surely come, it will not tarry” (Habakkuk 2:2-3).

You can be a part of the “gathering up” of the children for the Kingdom of God through Christmas H.O.P.E. Pray for the salvation of the children. Teach the children to have faith in God for everything and not turn from God in the midst of trouble!

Track B: Growth During Suffering

Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 5:10a

The Word of God teaches us that we will suffer, go through trials and tribulations, but fear not ... be of good cheer, Jesus has overcome these things (John 16:33). Even though we "know" it, sometimes we still have difficulty maintaining a positive attitude during suffering, trials and tribulation.

1 Peter 3-5 tells us how a Christian should behave in times of suffering. We are to grow in Christ, even when suffering (1 Peter 4:12-5:11). We are to remain strong in faith and in the end, God will give victory to those who remain faithful.  This week ask the Lord to reveal the truth about the trial you may be experiencing and what you are to gain from it.  How can you use this for His glory, even if you don't understand what is happening.

"And after you suffer for a short time, God, who gives all grace, will make everything right..."

1 Peter 5:10a

Focus on God, not the problem and remember everything is going to be all right! God is in control.

Track A: Learn to Encourage the Spirit of Others

Scripture Reading: Colossians 3

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also you are called in one body; and be thankful. Children obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged."

(Colossians 3:15,20 & 21)

How often have you longed for a kind word or uplifting and encouragement from fellow believers? Many times we forget that a few thoughtful words from a friend or family member could be the difference in having a blessed day or remaining in weariness in our doing good. We need to encourage the spirit of others with loving words and acts of kindness.

Children are no different, and also need encouragement. Uplift your children so that they do not become discouraged and lose faith in God or you. Teach them to love the Lord with all their heart and might. In doing so, you will make every moment a lasting memory for here and eternity.

Track B: Make it A Hallelujah Night (from our Faith Zone 2000 Archive website)

Scripture Reading: Is. 8:19-20; Lev. 19:31 & 20: 6

19) "When they say to you, “Ask those who speak in secret with the spirits of the dead and who use their secret ways,” should not a people ask their God?

Should they speak to the dead for the living?

20) Tell them to put their faith in the teaching and the Law. If they do not speak what this word says, it is because they have no light in them."

(Isaiah 8:19-20 NLT)

"Do not ask what you should do from those who speak with bad spirits or talk to the dead. Do not find them or you will be unclean. I am the Lord your God."

(Leviticus 19:31 NLT)

"I will go against the person who turns to those who speak with bad spirits and talk to the dead. In doing this, he sells himself to them. He will not be numbered among God’s people."

(Leviticus 20:6 NLT)

I remember going out a few times on Halloween night trick or treating just like most kids in America, but our costumes were much different. My mother never let us celebrate Halloween, but instead we celebrated Harvest time. To us, it was a time to celebrate the bounty of God, and we enjoyed it just as much as everyone else. As a matter of fact, we had some of the best Christian parties ever and we still remember them fondly. So why not celebrate like the world does?

The original reason for Halloween (Samhain) meant summers end and it was a festival to gather food for the dead. Those who didn't give were cursed, and received a trick of destruction to their property. Jack-o-lanterns were carved to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. It was a practice done to communicate to the dead with the use of witchcraft.

In this day and age, witchcraft is still alive and witches believe Halloween to be the most important spiritual day of the year, in which they can communicate with the dead. This holiday in no way represents Christians.

Alternative's for Christians: Have a party film night, a themed party or a costume ball of Bible heroes, give prizes and serve harvest time food for a talent or puppet show. This October 31st, have a Hallelujah for Jesus night, and let the dead stay dead!
