A devastating 7.3 earthquake has struck Haiti

A devastating reminder of nature's fury

An opportunity to help and learn about the Caribbean country

This morning brought unfortunate news: Haiti, no stranger to devastation and misery, suffered a brutal 7.3 magnitude earthquake and thousands are feared to be dead. In a country where approximately 80% of the population lives in poverty, finding and treating living victims, rebuilding, and preventing the scale of destruction the next time an earthquake hits will be a major undertaking.

A small solace is seeing the news pouring in of international relief efforts. Anyone who would like to donate privately can look for options among these respected relief agencies:

International Red Cross
OxFam
Medecins Sans Frontieres
American Red Cross

To understand a bit of the historical context of the country, I turned to a number of helpful, informative Hubs on the subject:

Haiti - Its People and History - a brief political history and economic rundown, along with pictures

Haiti: Past and Future From 16th-Century Colonialism to 21st-Century Globalization - a Harvard thesis provides a longer historical treatment

Is Haiti Doomed? - commentary on the reasons for the country's economic woes

Medical Mission to Haiti - a pharmacist describes a recent aid trip to the country, with pictures

As the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami raised the level of attention to preparedness and coordinated prevention measures, maybe the silver lining to this dark cloud will be improved infrastructure and preparation to forestall the same level of destruction when the next natural disaster hits.

Have a great week, everyone.

The overall premise behind tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) is driver, passenger, and pedestrian safety. Throw in the added benefits of longer tire life, money savings, and having a positive impact on the environment and tire pressure sensors are simply a great product. I’m glad I learned about them and you will too. Invest in your safety. Invest in a quality tire pressure monitoring system today. Your family, your wallet, and the environment will thank you!

cindyvine interviews blondepoet

An intriguing exchange turns up quite a few chuckles!

I am so happy to have the opportunity to interview such an amazingly interesting person and dinkum diverse writer as Blondepoet. I know I am just one of many who have enjoyed reading the variety of hubs you've published here. In an effort to let everyone get to know you a little better, I thought I'd pose some questions for you, so that people can see what makes the Blonde tick.  What lies beneath, so as to speak.

1.  You have written a book of poems which you've had published.  Can you tell us a bit about what inspired you to write poetry?

I have always written poetry from the time I was a little girl. When I was little I had no-one to talk to, so I would go into my room at night, which was a far away tropical island, where orangatangs swang from lush green trees and where fairies secretly slept, and write my feelings down. They were very depressing pieces in those times, secret wishes to close my eyes and never wake up, tales of monsters with big snarling gnashing teeth, based on my neighbours next door. From that time onwards, almost every experience that has come my way, I have documented in poetry. People have often said my life is like a book, I am very easy to read, now why would that be?.

2.  What led you to HubPages, was it the community, social interaction, writing or the opportunity to make truckloads of money?

I have always written poetry from the time I was a little girl. When I was little I had no-one to talk to, so I would go into my room at night, which was a far away tropical island, where orangatangs swang from lush green trees and where fairies secretly slept, and write my feelings down. They were very depressing pieces in those times, secret wishes to close my eyes and never wake up, tales of monsters with big snarling gnashing teeth, based on my neighbours next door. From that time onwards, almost every experience that has come my way, I have documented in poetry. People have often said my life is like a book, I am very easy to read, now why would that be?.

3.  You used to be quite busy on the forums and introduced everybody to your zany sense of humor.  What advice would you give to new hubbers wanting to make their mark?

If you write what comes from inside it will come alive in print, and people will feel it when they read it. Don't just slap any 'ole thing down in print, and hope it will attract readers like bees to a bee-hive. Make your hubs as interesting as you can, with lots of colour, soul, time and effort, and I guarantee it will pay off.I am one of those writers that has to wait for inspiration to hit me in the head, and once it does, there is no stopping me, it just flows like the Amazon.

4.  For a while, you were the queen of the happy juice enemas.  Do you have a special recipe you'd like to share with us?

I thought you would never ask Cindy. Boy oh boy have I invented some beauties. You know you started this all of with your tales of my potions,on your pages, so of course I have had to see this all through. Here is one of my favourites.
1 cup beans
1/2 cup fairy dust (you can find this in your garden after the sun goes down)
2 tbls oil of bushflies
1 tsp spanish fly (aphrodisiac) Is that how you spell it Cindy?
Mix all ingredients together with a large hammer. Bash the heck out of it (good for anger management) til it looks right.

5.  In the early days, you were the instigator of something which became known as 'Hubjacking.'  Could you please tell us what it is and how one goes about doing it?

Oh boy oh boy hubjacking, sigh, those were the days my friend. Hey isn't that the name of a song? I have to say Cindy I did a lot of this. Some of my partners in crime were Pest, Goldentoad, AE, MM, RBlue, C.C and you of course. We used to target someones hub, all meet each other there, and in a matter of minutes the comments would rise from 8 to 100 quite easily. My first biggy involved mud-wrestling with AE and Pest, such worthy opponents and of course the curvaceous J.J who appeared later on to dong us all on the head. J.J and I ended up taking Pest home, holding him prisoner while we painted his toes red with purple spots. When the hubber returned to his story they would nearly have a heart attack to see at least 80 comments awaiting LMAO.

6.  You are a make-up artist and an actress as well as a writer.  How have your other careers influenced your writing?

Oh definitely Cindy the inspiration from my careers has certainly prompted me to tell my tales. Like the time I lopped off an ear in my early days in hairdressing to the lady whose gel nails I applied, and fell off and got stuck to her keyboard. At least they dropped off there, and they were easy to find, gosh I don't understand due to that reason why she was so irate with me. Also the lady whose whole eye-brow I accidentally waxed off, that actually started a new fashion trend. Well, cough, I don't know for sure but she never came  back to complain. Then again I think I was sacked at that point, gosh it is difficult to say.

7.  Your hubs are quite diverse, ranging from rollicking sexy humour to more serious ones like Goodbye to rape and hello to love again.  You've also shared your experiences with anorexia nervosa.  How have you managed to switch between serious topics and fun topics?

You know Cindy it's funny you say that, as I never choose my Hubs they always choose me. I could be lying in bed at night trying to sleep, when suddenly a deep inspiration hits me in the heart about what my next Hub is going to be about. There are so many sides to me from humorous to deep soul searching, and I'm not afraid to share those sides with anyone. I always hope to inspire even just one soul with my own experiences I have gone through and to bring a little joy to a saddened eye with my funny ones. I'm not afraid to stand there naked in front of everyone and say what's inside, I'm damn proud to be who I am today and I'll shout it to every roof top until no-one listens no more.

8.  When people look back and remember Blondepoet one day, what would you like to be remembered for?

I would love my epitaph to read:
Here she lies in heart and grace,
For she sleeps with a smile on her face.
Seriously I would love to be remembered for the girl who loved too much, the eccentric girl who forever tried to see the bright side of life. The girl who once lay there dying but stood up on her feet to later conquer the world.

9.  Which would you say is your favourite hub you wrote and why?

Before I name it may I say that lap lap you are wearing Cindy really shows that Africa is really agreeing with you. Oh my!
Seriously my favourite Hub has to be "Lose Weight Fast With Anna Bimbodumbkoff". Darn that lady had hairy armpits. I got to say words like rectum, darlinks and porkers. She actually was a character I portrayed in my livid acting career so I was over the moon to re-inact her. Fair dinkum everytime I read that story I roll on the floor laughing. Anna you rock! I'm not modest am I?

10.  And lastly, your most dreaded question, no - not when is Sufidreamer delivering the prawns, but who are your most favourite inspirational hubbers and why?

Yea thanks for reminding me Cindy..SUFIDREAMER YOU SLACKO WHERE ARE MY HALF KILO OF PRAWNS YOU MAN OF ALL TALK AND LITTLE DELIVERANCE. My favourite Hubbers gosh I have so many so if I don't mention you it is not because I don't love you it is just because I would be here all day. AE, (her compassion) M.M (her wrestling skills), Logic (his pick-up lines) Christoph (his pimple stories) Ralwus (his finesse) ChrisA (his remarkable writings, I taught him everything I know) Goldentoad (his memory sigh) J.J (her toe nail painting skills, Sufidreamer ( "where's me prawns bucko? ") Dohnny ( flattery will get you everywhere) MickeyDee ( he gives me heaps comments LMAO ) Art ( HP's most diverse persona) the two Toms (yes you two) and Cindy (you made my pole-dancing famous). Honestly the list goes on and on, I love all you guys.Cough, umm, do I get paid for this Cindy?
