The desired qualification for a Graphic designer would be a graduation degree in Commercial Art coupled with a Diploma in Graphic design/ Multimedia/animation. A sound knowledge of Flash, Photoshop and Coreldraw, 3D MAX, Illustrator, InDesign, etc. are needed for a graphic designer to succeed in his / her career. Knowledge of HTML and other web programming languages such as XML, Visual Basic etc. would be further helpful especially if your focus is website designing.

A degree or diploma in Commercial Art from a prominent institution like JJ School of Art or Raheja’s School of Art in Mumbai and a diploma or a degree in multimedia / graphics preferably from National Institute of Design (Ahmedabad) is a great passport for succeeding in a Graphic Design career.

The basic eligibility to enroll into a graphic design and animation course is to be creative and innovative. The course for graphic designing trains students to visually communicate their ideas in a creative manner using images and text. The animation course curriculum trains students how to infuse life into caricatures and personify them.

Both the course curriculum include comprehensive study in fine arts, communication, drawing, color principles, aesthetics, advertising, marketing, design services and multimedia. The combined courses in graphic designing and animation also include drawing, design, computer science, typography 2D and 3D design, art history, communication design and layout.

The initial salary for a fresher may be modest at Rs 5000 per month. But depending on which field and company you land a job, the starting salary may vary. But once you gather experience and prove your capabilities, you can quickly go up in your career path and start earning Rs. 10000 – 15000 and in senior positions the salary would range from 30,000 – 50,000 p.m.

After the completion of the graphic designing and animation courses from a recognized institution, you can start your career with either an advertising agency or a media firm as a trainee. Many graphic art schools will provide their students with good placements after successful course completion. As you gather hands-on experience working on live projects and working under the guidance of seniors, you will gain knowledge and grow in confidence.

If you are fed up of employment, you can eventually venture on your own and become a freelancer. You should create an impressive portfolio of your past work and some hypothetical work and approach various clients to get regular assignments. Some established freelance graphic designers enjoy fabulous income which they may never have got as salary in employment.
