Why, in 2012, would a significant portion of small/local businesses still not have websites?
Still website or online presence for many companies is not necessary even though penetration is increasing every day. It will take long time before every one has presence on net.
I think there are many reasons. One may be the costs. Often this isn't just the cost to design a website but also someone to manage it. For sales, product prices can fluctuate often and they may need someone solely dedicated to doing this.
I think another reason is fear. Perhaps they don't feel able to cope with a possible jump in business. Or they may think they can't compete with larger businesses.
I think it also has to do with the type of business as well.
I think the small businesses feels that the cost of website will be high. There are so many small businesses that really need websites/blogs such as plumbers, electricians, learner drivers and many more. At times I google for some small services and I can't even find them on free Google places/maps.
Some small business owners I know feel that the websites allow a sort of invasion into their life by hackers and identity thieves. They are also the ones who still use the local newspapers for advertisement and are doing well. They service their area and have no need for the universal exposure. Another is that many of them were in business well before the influx of computer training in our school system and computers themselves are overwhelming, much less creating and maintaining a website.
I understand their point of view, but at the same time, my own personal business has expanded completely on the backs of websites!
