If you post Indian actress pics, you've been copied. Anyone that's printed anything to do with health - check the site. Halloween - you're on there.

What a sack of shit hmm

Dogs, hair advice, software and product reviews. Sheesh.

And I know the person doing this will be banned. But they'll do it again. And others will do the same.

Why can't these site install programming that prevents it. HP has something that picks up copied content.

I don't know enough about how it all works to talk intelligently, but how are some websites able to block you from right clicking on their material?  I ran across one earlier today where I was trying to highlight a long name that I didn't want to have to remember how to spell before trying to Google it.  That site had blocked it where you couldn't right click and copy anything and mentioned that their material was copyrighted, blah, blah, blah.  It was annoying for what I was trying to do, but it sure would be handy in cases like this.

Just a thought Thranax, how about editing your original posts so they don't get the backlinking benefit of all those hyperlinks?

    1. thranax profile image72

You can't edit after 5 minutes..Your worrying about backlinks when this is a real copyright issue of a large scale? There whole site should be offline soon enough, or else the account will be removed, breaking all the links.

This is how the guy did it! Look on DocStoc they have a program to upload all files from a FOLDER! They are downloading all the content with a spiderbot, saving to a directory, then using this provided by DocStoc to upload!

"Docstoc Sync is a downloadable application that runs on your PC or Mac. You can select which folders you wish to sync with Docstoc. The application will check these folders for changes and automatically sync any new or updated documents with Docstoc MyDocs. By default, Docstoc Sync will upload and sync all your documents privately on Docstoc, so no one else can view these documents without your permission. In addition Docstoc Sync installs a folder on your desktop called "Docstoc Public Documents", where you can easily upload any document to Docstoc publicly. "

Well, at this point, I've filed a complaint with the DMCA, then copied that complaint in an email to copyright@docstoc.com and told them:

"I, and hundreds of others from the same website (hubpages.com) have discovered today that someone has been uploading our copyrighted material to your website.  We are each individually filling complaints (see mine below) with the DMCA and Google Adsense.  We expect you to ban the individual(s) responsible and to remove our content from your site. You have stolen traffic and revenue from the original authors of this material and it must end now."

I also filed a complaint with Google Adsense.

Docstoc, Inc was founded by Jason Nazar (bio) and Alon Shwartz (bio). The company was selected in September of 2007 to debut its product at the prestigious TechCrunch40 Conference. The product was subsequently launched to the public in November 2007.

Docstoc is a venture backed company (Rustic Canyon) and received funding from the co-founders/investors in MySpace, LowerMyBills, Mp3.com, PriceGrabber and Baidu. Their legal counsel is DLA Piper. The company is located in Santa Monica, CA.

Wont effect you really, it's just stealing the general traffic you could be getting. Say you would get 20 views on a hub a day, well with them still around, you would be getting 17 on that if they copied it. Thats my rough guess.

Just dropped a line to the docstoc.com team:

    Dear Docstoc.com

Your site currently has published hundreds of thousands of articles containing stolen material.

Since 09/11/09, a user with multiple profiles:( shifta, shiftb shiftc, shiftd etc and also shift1, shift2, shift3 etc.) has been bulk uploading copied material.
Each profile has 10,000 - 20,000 aticles. Another offender is 'Q16899'

This is obviously a major issue and will have serious repercussions for your site. Many targetted authors at hubpages.com have informed google adsense as this is a breach of their TOS.

I am concerned by your lack of quality control. Any form of control should flag a user uploading hundreds of thousands, if not millions of articles.

It seems wise to remove these articles immediately to limit the damage being done to the reputation of your site.

If you have truely been unaware, you have now been informed.

Looks like this guy has a lot of usernames but wasn't doing much of anything until the end of August. I've found usernames that have uploaded docs on shifta through shiftn and shift3, shift4 and shift5 that combined have stolen a grand total of 347,640 articles -- not all from HP. But from the sampling I did, all definitely stolen.

  31. profile image0
    ryankettposted 15 years ago

Well im not publishing anything until this is resolved, so I suggest that the Hubpages team get on this immediately.

This has to be communication from the top of Hubpages to the top of Docstoc. My traffic is static despite publishing about 40 new hubs, and now I know why.

This is awful, I am gutted. But it explains a lot. Even Mark Knowles has been experiencing poor traffic.

In fact, I suggest that Hubpages gets straight on the phone to Google and their lawyers. This is serious stuff.

    1. lrohner profile image70

It will only be a matter of time though, he is clearly using RSS feeds or something to strip the content. With 400,000 stolen articles, they are hardly sitting their reading them!

I havent found any of mine yet either, but it has been less than a day..... give it another day and the whole of hubpages would have been stripped.

So, Sunforged, you're always one of the most knowledgable (if not THE most knowledgable) about this type of thing.  Any ray of "feel ok-ness" with this?  I realize it's something that we're always subject to, but other than reporting it as many of us have already done, what else is there to do, but to carry on writing hubs?

The way I see it, if I stop publishing hubs, then yes, they have nothing more of mine to copy, but neither am I getting the hits I would be getting.

I guess my hope too is that the powers that be will take care of it fairly quickly.  Obviously nothing is going to happen on a Sunday night and tomorrow is a holiday for many businesses in the US.

This process is very common, there are many sites that allow you to upload full files and folders such as this one in question (Scribd was another that was frequently used in this respect)

The scammers and black hatters that use these methods dont expect to get the full backlash of a communtity .

Unfortunately, no there is nothing ok about this - there are no backlinks back to our original articles, Sometimes I dont care if an article is copied, because they leave all my affiliate links in place and I still get traffic and another backlink, with this format there are no benefits for us as writers.

Hubpages should assist in cancelling any account associated with the URL trackers mentioned (I havent seen that yet), to remove incentive

      first:
Everyone who cares should send copyright complaints to adsense
      http://www.google.com/adsense_dmca.html

Threatening the websites earnings for failure to create a safe system should be first.

Then individually contacting the website (How annoying that we have to do this!)

    well for docstoc -

there FAQ's state  " What happens if I upload documents that I don’t have either own copyright for or have consent of copyright holder?

It is our policy to respond to clear notices of alleged copyright infringement that comply with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. In addition, we will promptly terminate without notice the accounts of those determined by us to be "repeat infringers". "

    Heres the complaint link

    He has 4 of mine.

Ironically, he has my 3 hubs which have never earnt me a cent. And they are my '50 Great Hubs chosen by 50 Great Hubbers' articles, and the 'Hubbers on Twitter directory'.

The other one however, about hard drives, is in my top 10 earning hubs. He hasnt had any views yet, but Im still pissed.

You might not have earned any money off those 2 because he got the click instead on his copied one.

As far as I can tell, he got all of my hubs ... even the newest ones. sad

And yes ... this has adversely affected my traffic over the past few days ... my numbers were steadily climbing until this bozo started lifting my hubs sad

I know there were quite a few of early in this thread that filed complaints with DMCA, filed complaints with Google Adsense and some of us wrote emails to copyright@docstoc.com.

So, if enough of us do that, it'll be hard to ignore.  Obviously, if upper management gets involved, as I'm sure they will, we should at least get some sort of result from this.

Forgot to mention, so far I haven't found any of mine to have been copied, but I only searched a few pages - is there an easier way to search?
