Hi there! We're reaching out with an exciting update. As some of you may have noticed, we've been experimenting with sitewide editing for some time and have seen a boost in site traffic overall as a result.
Until recently, we had only worked on a handful of sites, but we are now expanding to our entire network. For those of you with many articles on a given site, this means you will receive many emails from us while that site is undergoing editing. Thank you for your patience!
Thank you for the edits and increased traffic. This is great news!
Will you also be editing Discover and moving worthy articles to more specific niche sites?
Great question! We will not be editing all of Discover (at least not now), but we have started editing more content from that site with the goal of moving it to our Network Sites.
This is great and is welcomed. You've taken your numerous writers into consideration in informing them of the venture. But when exactly is the 'many emails' start rolling in? This to prevent an overload in our inboxes?
Miebakagh...
I hear ya.
Hopefully it's not empty promises.
But can we bank on that? When the commemt button was still in the making? The later is suppose to be roll out first.
I'm glad to read about this. I know this may be a little off topic, but I have one pressing question. When will the comments sections of our articles be restored? I understand that your team was attempting to piece together a better system than what we had for posting comments. However, it has been a couple of months since we had comments sections for our articles. I noticed how much it bolstered how many views my articles got when that feature was still available.
I hear you well. Rolling out the comment button first is the right thing to do.
Great! Thanks for the update. Have a wonderful Easter everyone.
That's great news, but please remember not to edit any articles that have a pending copyright infringement as noted with the copyright symbol on our stats reports.
I discussed this with Matt and I understand he placed a note for editors to avoid such updates since the date change can interfere with the success of Hubbers filing DMCA takedown requests.
I wish there was a way to retain the actual publication date when we update articles. It would be great if the copyright symbol at the bottom had an actual month and day rather than just the year. And when we update, it would be nice if it would say "updated on" with the date. It would make it all easier.
Hi Adrienne! The original publish date is retained on the back end in our code. We did test having both the original and updated date side by side, but it looked very funky on the page. As for the copyright, it does show the original publication year, just not the month and day.
Adrienne, whatever it is, it's causing difficulty with Google accepting DMCA takedown in some cases. There is more to it than the "updated" date.
I have two articles that were plagiarized with copies on blogger . com. In the past, it was always easy to get copies removed from blogger since Google hosts that domain.
However, recently Google doesn't accept it when I point out where my copyright statement is located. They only seem to see the "Maven Media Brands" copyright at the bottom of the page and refuse to accept my takedown request, stating that I am not the copyright holder. Matt tried to help, but we were both stuck with Google's decision.
Good point, Glenn, and you're not the first one to bring it up.
Editing team, please take heed. This is a serious problem.
This is disconcerting and needs to be address by HP or Google.
Hi Glenn,
I have had some issues like that and screenshots from the Wayback Machine (Internet Archive) have helped me prove my article was written first. In another case I had to take a screenshot using the stats option with the published date. This helped me with copyright issues sent to hosting companies.
With Google it's a pain since they don't have the option of sending screen shots. I wished they would make things easier for us. In some cases, when they cannot find the proof easily, they reply with an email and that allows me to attach screen shots with proof. We shouldn't go through so many hassles! I hope you are able to resolve this.
Another similar issue I am having is a website that has stolen my articles with pictures of my dogs. I wrote these a while back so the editors have removed the pictures therefore, if the violator disputes this I no longer can prove they are mine.
I can try to re-institute the pictures, but there's always that exact original date missing so the violator may say I just added them later.
In some cases, old comments can provide some proof of dates with month and day, but with no more comments being added lately, we can no longer even rely on that.
Hi Adrienne, You gave me an interesting idea to try. As you mentioned, I also have emails going back and forth with Google when they ask for proof of ownership. So I can include a screenshot to show where my Copyright notice is located.
I think they keep giving me a hard time because their reps only scroll to the bottom of the page where they expect the copyright stated. Unfortunately, that's where the Maven copyright is located, and they overlook mine.
Matt suggested I resubmit my takedown request after a waiting period, but I had the same results when I did that. So now I'll try again and include a screenshot. But I need to wait a while since it's too soon since the last time they denied to honor the DMCA.
Hi Glenn, you can also take a screenshot of the relevant section of your 'My Traffic Sources' page. I've used it a lot.
Thanks Adrienne. I do that when I reissue the request.
Oh silly me! So sorry I didn’t notice that last one came from you Bev. Thanks so much, that was very helpful.
I already went ahead and made a screenshot of mine to send to Google. But I need to wait a while before submitting a takedown request again after being denied (twice).
Will you be going over sites you recently edited in the near future? For example, you just did Spinditty a few months ago and Pethelpful not that long ago. I'd hope you're not addressing them again anytime soon. As you say, for those of us with a lot of articles on a given site it is a lot of extra work, in addition to our own edits and updates we do.
We won't be circling back around to Spinditty for a while yet, but we are currently editing PetHelpful again, partially because it is one of our most popular sites. You are always welcome to create a filter in your email that sends messages from us into a separate folder that you can check at your leisure so that your inbox doesn't get clogged up.
Any articles that you've edited recently will not show up in our queues, so you don't have to worry about us editing something you've just made changes to yourself.
In the mid of October 2021, I wrote two articles for Halloween, one about Halloween makeup and the other about Halloween hairstyles. Luckily, the editors made quick edits to the articles and moved them to Bellatory within a few days. I received an email about 3 days ago informing me that the editors had made a few changes to both articles. I'm not sure why the editors felt the need to do so, because both articles were well written and edited. Furthermore, it is not Halloween season.
Well, they are saying it is site-wide -- meaning they are editing everything on the site regardless of recency or topic.
Thank you, psycheskinner. I'm aware of that, but I was curious as to why they felt the need to make an edit to recently edited articles. It's great if it can help to increase traffic.
Hi Misbah. If the most recent author edit falls outside a certain window, it will show up in our queues for sitewide editing. If the article is already in good shape, changes will likely be minimal!
That is great news if it is increasing traffic to our sites. Thanks!
That's true. Increase in traffic is welcome.
Before comments are made universal across the sites, I would prefer that we can approve them via our dashboards. 'Comment central', please. I don't want to be chasing them down via individual articles.
Good idea, Bev. They'll have to reactivate the comments link that appears on our profile page in order to do so, but I like your thinking.
I do hope this helps, because right now my views are earnings are back down to January levels!
According to GA, my traffic is less than half yesterday from what it was on Wednesday. My highest traffic seems to happen on the weekends, consistently. However, I'm seeing lower traffic than ever in the last couple of days.
Although I haven't written anything new in the last couple of years (Maven/Arena merges have been a major contribution to my lack of inspiration), I still earn on evergreen topics that appear in Dengarden and Delishably.
So, why the extremely low views? Are the HP/Maven/Arena sites being pushed to the bottom of the SERP totem pole?
I write almost exclusively for Perthelpful and my views are 50% of what they were in January. Unless something is broken on the counter and blue arrows this week are meaningless, things are terrible on PH from my perspective.
Does anybody know why The Spruce is so popular with Google? The editing I have seen is appreciated, but it's just fixing typos (which is appreciated) and not addressing the underlying issue of falling views and SERPs.
Some are now recalling and even wants the comment system back. Cool.

I don’t want to make too big a deal of this. My interactions with editors over the past few years have been very positive and I appreciate their work. There are some excellent people on the HP editorial staff today. However, I think there is always room for improvement, suggestions, and constructive...

When you edit your existing articles, what do you do?

Hi fellow hubbers! I’m wanting to see what you all do in this case. I’m wanting to improve some of my articles that I have already written. Do you find that it helps their score and traffic when you do edit them? Does it really help or do you think it’s just best sometimes to start over completely...

A few weeks ago, I posted some thoughts on why traffic is falling for many writers and what we might do about it. One of the things I considered is that massive rewrites and fresh articles may be the ticket to clawing back on some of these traffic drops. Here is some more food for thought on that...

In the last few months, I've spent a long time updating all of my network hubs, improving the language and flow, breaking up the text, getting better pictures, fixing links, adding more recent research, updating stats, titles, descriptions, etc. My traffic across these 100 or so hubs seems to have...

Recently, when I've tried to sign in, I noticed the site was extremely slow loading. I am using Windows and I assume the latest version of Chrome. I can't get a screenshot. Thanks for looking into this.
