In your opinion. What is the gretast invention/discovery and why ?
the microchip? telephones, jet engines and cars revolutionized the world, but the microchip advanced all of these inventions and many others, like space telescopes and satellites, far beyond they ever could have gone without them.
Do you mean of all time, since the birth of man, or recent inventions, say in the last 200 years?
I think it goes back to the basics.
Sharp edged tools
Fire
The Wheel
Writing
The internet - thank you Al Gore - because it began to increase the availability of information at rates that have never before been seen by human kind.
Speaking from where I'm sitting right now? Heat and electricity. It's freaking freezing outside, and without electricity that allowed my furnace to work, I'd be totally miserable!
Me too (heat, electricity, and Pampers) - although cars, clothes dryers, Mp3's, microwave ovens, and Barbie dolls are all good too.
well...i thought about this a little more...if there was an apocalypse i would definitely want a huge store of things that Man would find hard to make like Pampers, toothpaste, feminine products and dental floss...
Religion- it has master the art of bestowing real substance to unsubstantiated misconceived notions and trapped 90% of the world in a hoax, which is detrimental to the existence of humankind.
The printing press... It opened up the world to all sorts of ideas
THE COMPUTER. Without it, there'd be no internet, no microchip, printing would be less advanced, news would travel more slowly, modern office tech would be less efficient and accomplish less in longer time periods, many industrial and scientific advances would be stalled, including those reliant upon accurate computer modeling; meteorology would also be set back decades, whereas computer tech has saved lives thru accurate storm forecasting dependent upon computer technology, etc, etc, etc.
Electricity. Without it there would be no computers, no Internet, or any other electronic goods on which we depend so much nowadays.
Computers can be battery-powered rather than electrically powered. There is a class of batteries known as deep cycle batteries; some of these, such as Industrial Deep Cycle batteries, can last from 10 to 20 years. The NiFe alkaline battery lasts from 5 to 35 years.
These batteries have high power output, and could be cabled by design to connect with and power computers in place of electricity.
From the Internet: Nickel Iron (NiFe) Batteries
Shortcomings
Low cell voltage.
Very heavy and bulky.
The low reactivity of the active components limits the high rate performance of the cells. They cells take a charge slowly, and give it up slowly.
Low coulombic efficiency, typically less than 65%
Steep voltage drop off with state of charge
Low energy density.
High self discharge rate.
Are you saying that this is man's greatest invention?
- They have been around since 1900.
- And aren't they recharged with electricity?
Not sure where your online stats come from, but batteries even now power cell phones, etc.
Also, electricity is a force rather than an invention (no patent exists claiming a legal monopoly on electricity ); but the field of electronics is a field in which inventions abound, the computer being one of those, and it CAN be run by battery power.
Computer is my top pick.
No kidding? Interesting. I did not know that....see there, everyone I said it....I DID NOT KNOW THAT. I don't often say that string of words together in regard to myself.
The burrito, because it is so scrumptious, and it's a complete meal.
The "sandwich"...got to hand it to the Earl of Sanwich...he was a genius!
The greatest discovery is the ability for us to use our thumbs, because if we didn't we wouldn't have anything but a cave, and eat leaves.
~thranax~
The sandwich! I mean, come on! There is nothing like putting meat between two slices of bread.
LOL, wait, yes...the sandwich
Ok ok ok....I've got one.....glass....glass...what would this world be like without windows, without sparkling things, how would we drive cars in rain or snow? How would near-sighed people see leaves on trees, how would far-sighted men tell their wives apart? What would we use for thermometers...how would we see the fish in our fishtanks? Oh Oh...what would we use to check if our diamonds a really real?
The speed of aeroplanes become faster and faster. It shortens our travel time from one spot to the other spot. This was the great invention. That means we can visit more places in our life time.
You are right william Tan Seng ..... It is great invention .... but for me its sad .... I have been to flight for only 1 time in my life .......
We are celebrating in Bumble Town the new invention that we are calling: FIRE.
This will allow us to burn the place down after we have learnt to bake Bread. Next week our scientist will explore something called the alphabet. YeeHaa
Provide some good knowledge about real inventions
..... not about daily routine inventions ...... as everybody does it that way .... how you do .....
Excuse Me????? Did YOU miss something here?
"Provide some good knowledge about real inventions"
It seems knowledge is wasted on some!!
Should I explain it in photos?
FIRE - BREAD - ALPHABET - you refer to these as daily routine inventions?
Without Fire: - Well.. Your life would be pretty shitty Jonty Boy.... You couldn't burn the Cow Pats!
Without Bread: - We wouldn't be exposed to so many pictorials of Bollywood women And Wouldn't be Controlled by Clicks!
Without the Alphabet: - We couldn't see Your spelling mistakes!
But Hey.... Thanks for helping me help you!
Ok ..... chill out pearldiver ....
don't be rude ....
I got your definition of "Great Invention" (forum topic)
What do you think about .....
pencil
paper
watch
brush
etc ......
Are not they reaaaaaaallllllyyyyyyy Great Invention ........
Fire was the top on my list...otherwise we would have frozen a few milleniums ago. The wheel is the next. Tools after that. Language after that. Okay, I'll stop. ha ha ha (and no, these are not daily routines either!)
"Ok ..... chill out pearldiver ...."
Chill Out? - I didn't appreciate your initial rude remarks.
"don't be rude ...." - Believe me.... on my scale of 1-10 - I wasn't being rude!! (That was only a 1.5)
Ok ..... pearldiver ...... fights to end ...... I am now really sorry .... for my last post .....
forget everything and be happy ......
Post more ..... so that it's fun allaround ......
pencil - Great invention, allows me to write and be able to rub it out if I make mistakes
paper - something used throughout my early education and almost everyday presently. Used often with the pencil. I use it in the bathroom too!
watch - a great way to tell the time by glancing at my wrist. No need to walk around with a great big clock to tell the time
brush - Used in cleaning, to groom ones hair, to clean ones teeth
All 4 great inventions!
vacuum tubes because here it is where electronics including those that are used in todays appliances and computers started...
good day general, i took a look at the website you created, it is a decent one, continue it, good job, if you have time read this,
http://hubpages.com/hub/A-tribute-to-th … ino-worker
telescopes, galileo galilei invented it (after that they have seen that the earth is not the center of the universe)
What about transistor ..... it is also great invention .....
Funny you should say that, I wrote a hub that touches on the subject a bit. Read under "Where it all Started"
http://hubpages.com/hub/Embedded-Comput … -computing
Nice hub about microprocessor ........
yet another great invention .....
Spandex and Spanx.....because they give a flattering figure without the situps!!!
The wheel. Women invented it and we haven't looked back ever since.
Agriculture. It turned nomadic tribes into cities into civilizations to destroy...er save...the Earth.
I think agriculture is not an invention ...... but discovery ....
Thank you every one for your participation. God Bless you all:)
